Ill start off, I needed a place to store shovels and brooms. I had some shedule 40 PVC in the shop so this is what I came up with. 4-90deg elbows 2- tees and about 4' of pvc and 6 hangers. Total less than $8.00 (I had leftover pvc and elbows, so all I had to buy was the hangers...so less than $2.00)

Here's one.

I took advantage of some cast off things at work. I work at a Data Center, and we get these cabinets that come in, in custom crates. Some are picked up and returned others are one time use. Well we got a one time use one in and it was destined for the dumpster. I grabbed it and took it home, picked up some exterior paint on sale at home depot for 15 bucks for a gallon and a quart. used some scrap 2x4's and osb left over from another project, and made some joists and a small peaked roof. had a buddy that gave me some shingles and felt paper left over from a project. I scored a stack 12"x12" landscaping stones from a craigslist ad for free. I laid down a 4'x5' slab with the landscape stones in a corner of my yard. I then placed the crate on the slab. I took some scrap 3/4" plywood and made slats inside the crate to put hooks on and proceeded to lay out the design for my storage. Now I have all of my Lawn and garden tools, including my weed eater, its attachments and my lawn mower out of my garage and in my new shed. I was even able to hang my ladders on the outside.

total cost $30 for screws, nails, and paint everything else was free.

Here are some pics of the finished product. this was taken just before the last bit of paint.

What do you think?

This topic is RIGHT up my alley. Here are a few pics of things I've repurposed to suite my needs. Now that I've got my own shop, the things I've built have really helped, since it's a small space and I'm a bit of a storage junky. Anyway, here are the pics with a little explanation. Click to enlarge the photos.

P6060281.JPG

This is a small work surface I use when I need a surface more solid than my work bench. It's small, heavy and pretty solid so it's good to bang on, when necessary. The steel pieces were surplus yard finds and I paid for their scrap weight. I had the lumber, stain, etc. I probably have $25 into it.

Copy of P6210376.jpg

This wheel rack I made from scrap leftover from shortening my pallet racking. Previously I had a wooden wheel rack, which was too small. I had to purchase the casters, some steel for the uprights, and some paint. Probably around a hundred to build, in total... maybe a few bucks more.

P7240482.JPG

This is a score. I bought the box, filthy, for $25 bucks. The wood for the top I bought from a surplus place. Now I've got plenty of storage for consumables, bit's, etc. for the items that are near this, in the shop.

P5090198.jpg

These racks usually go for BIG bucks but I found this for $125. Of course, I then paid for sand blasting and paint but I'm in for less than $250 for an item that costs north of 1K. It's really helped keep stuff off the floor too.

I've got some more that I could post up if time permits.

Sorry, no pics to share,(EDIT- I scared up a few pics- shown in a new post) but as I think about it, it seems like half of my shop is re-purposed stuff.
By the front door, I have two school lockers to store some things in. Got those at an auction, $2 or 3 as I recall.
My workbench is made of two 4' chemistry lab cabinets from a college surplus auction. I built a steel structure around them to support the top so I wouldn't crush them. I believe the total cost for everything was under $100.
I have a large window that was also bought used at an auction when I was in the process of renovating the building. The window was either $1 or 2.
Found an old two door Steelcase storage cabinet at an auction, no recollection what I paid, but it wasn't much. I keep all of my drills, etc. in that.
Have a very nice metal kitchen cabinet over my tire machine, I keep all of my tire related tools and supplies in and on top of it. Again, under $5 if I remember right.
Bought a two sided Lozier shelving unit for my storage room for about $50. Have gobs of auto parts and supplies stored on that.
Also have a couple of things I got from a surplus sale at my wife's work. One is a small A/V cart on wheels with a lower enclosed area. I have a small tool chest on top of it.
Another neat thing is the rack I keep my metal stock on. A good friend of mine worked at a electrical component manufacturer. They were selling surplus stuff one time and he brought this to me. It's about 6' tall by about 30" square with shelves spaced about 6-8" apart. The main legs are channel iron, with angles tying them together at each shelf. The shelves are sheet steel welded to the angles. This thing is stout! I wouldn't be surprised if I have well over 1000# of steel on it! I wanted to pay him for it, but he'd never tell me what he had in it. He got two for one price and kept the other one for himself. I know there are some other things, but I'll have to look around to jog my memory.

Garage stool built from two sets of crutches, two 20" bike wheels, some 3/4" ply, 2" foam, and old bike tubes. The wheels and tubes were trash at the local bike shop. The crutches came from thrift stores.

Just started this one. It's a bit more complicated than the others. Will have neon lighting.

Blown speakers become mailboxes.

I turned an old 1938 GE tube radio and some old Klipsch computer speakers into a touchscreen jukebox.

Love the stool, the clocks and the radio. You really should sell those stools. I am totally going to rip off your idea. I'll be sure to tell all admirerers (word) I got it from GJ.

the jukebox and stool jump out at me as great craftiness. brent's bench-height anvil-type thing is pretty dang cool too. brent's tire and stock racks are great finds - i'd kill for those! nice work!

I've had several people ask for more info on the jukebox.

That build is logged in my garage thread in the gallery here on the Journal: http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104125

There's MUCH more tech and discussion about equipment and software for those looking to build one of these in my build thread on Pirate 4x4.

Full build thread on Pirate 4x4 here: http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1000618

My next jukebox (that will stay in the garage) will be built from a '39 Zenith and have iPod/iPad integration.

That's a nice juke! I have 2 1535L Elo's sitting in my basement. Still can't decide between a juke and a bar machine. A lot of other cool juke ideas @:

Wow! Never seen that forum before. Would've came in handy a few months back. :lol_hitti

I browsed through some of the thread and see that there are guys using ELOs with AlbumPlayer too.

Now I have yet another forum to peruse. :bounce:

I did get a few pics from my shop.
Here are the school lockers I referenced.
These are by the front door of the shop. THe left one has my supply of paper shop towels, shop rags, masking paper and some other assorted things. The right one has a cross bar and I have all of my car tie-downs, ratchet straps, etc hanging on that. Nice place to keep them all organized and out of the elements.

Here is the metal rack I mentioned, and a sheet storage bin that I got when a local lumber yard closed up. It was used for half sheets of plywood and paneling. I use it for my prepainted aluminum sheets that were used for the race car body. On top is a re-purposed office cabinet to store some stuff up out of the way, and to the left is a tire rack that I assembled from one of the three row racks that they used to have out in front of service stations.
