I found this interesting tool at the flea market yesterday. It cleaned up very nicely (unusual for my finds
). I was intrigued by the patent date, January 2, 1917, the COO (U.S. !!!) and the ******** logo. I wondered if this was a tool made for export to Germany pre-WWII. For $5, why not buy it?
After doing a little research on the company, Buffum Tool Co., I learned that they produced an extensive range of tools for construction and mechanical use from at least 1900 (according to some sources, 1887) until 1924 (or as late as 1940). The ******** logo appeared on all their tools. It was considered a sign of good luck, until the Nazis appropriated it.
I thought that the tool was some type of bearing puller(???), but it turns out to be a Buick valve spring tool. I don't really have any use for it, but it is an interesting piece of history.
