Build progress of the Busted Knuckle - Updates pg. 2

I know, I know, the name is a knock off, but it was given that name by multiple people since every time I have my friends over, we end up having nothing but busted knuckles from working on our vehicles... So... I came up with a logo for it.

BustedKnuckle.jpg

Anyway, I started working on the garage about 2 weeks ago. Decided to put my carpentry skills to the test to give my garage that "Wow" factor... Basically, my intent is to build a garage that looks like it has thousands of dollars of work for not even a few hundred, from at least 10'.

So, I am going for a relatively clean, classy look and will hopefully be done with EVERYTHING that I plan on doing by the end of April.

So anyway, here are two of the benches I have done.

The first is just a large bench with a shelf. So far, you can see that I have the scroll saw mounted on there and plan to mount a belt sander (Graciously donated by a friend of mine) and vice on there once I get the other tables finished.

Also built a shelf up top to hold various things (trophies, signs, odds-n-ends) as well as whatever else. Going to finish the structure off with a small shelf to the bottom right as well as a door on the side where I can slide the longer sections of wood and whatnot that I have back behind the cabinet and out of site.

IMAG0492.jpg

The other one that I have built is along the same lines with a shelf and the cabinet in it but has a lower section built to be a desk that I can sit at to do drawings or striping or whatever...

IMAG0507.jpg

As of right now, I have some of the filling done and some of the routing and sanding...

IMAG0508.jpg

Once I get all the routing and filling and sanding done, it will be stained (still not sure how dark) and sealed.

I also plan on doing some engraving on the forward facing 2x6s... Not really sure about the design, but keep it simple just to make it a little more interesting.

The next step is to build a cabinet that will hang from the ceiling above this one. Plan on mounting some lights under that for the desk and close it off with some doors. This will also have a "hidden" door on the side to hold large objects like bumpers and whatnot that I have sitting around.

Another cabinet will be built into the corner to hold the yard equipment.

Once that is done, the walls will get painted with something. I have a few ideas but nothing definitive yet. Thinking about a two tone style, maybe even include a break of some other color but who knows. Need to figure out what will work with the stain I pick out.

Then, the floor will be coated with the epoxy gray with the little blue, white and black flakes in it, then sealed to give it a nice shine.

As I go, I will update this thread...

Great idea to use lateral file cabinets under the bench if that is what they are? Looks like them anyway. Not sure but I just might have to paint those bright red, and do the woodwork in glossy gray. Looks good on the carpenter work too!! A steel workbench top would be good on the tops. Yeah, you can do an elite job with little money involved!!

Thanks man, and I was debating doing a steel top but I like the way wood looks. If it gets destroyed in a few years (which would take a lot for the wood I selected) then I just might do that. And everything is going to get painted or stained. Cabinets will be done as well to get rid of that ugly gray.

Here are some pictures from today. Was able to get out there for about 5 hours and finished up all the framing and the panels/shelves/sides...

Just need to finish routing and sanding...

Planning on mounting some doors on the front of at least one of the shelves. Don't really like the way it looks open...

So, not a whole hell of a lot of changes to the cabinets, but I did clean it all up and added some tools....

There is a table saw within that mess... still working on getting everything setup so I can move it around with ease for use.

IMAG0574.jpg

And from right to left, drill press, planer and a shaper.

IMAG0575.jpg

Going to mount a rolling frame under the shaper that I have back behind the drill press and then get some locking wheels bolted to the boards running along the bottom of the planer in order to be able to slide it out and use it, then slide it right back into place.

and a pano shot.

I like your benches. I'm finally getting to get started on my barn. I also like the name. I don't know if you know about this or not, but if you check out "Vics 66", they have a collection of busted knuckle signs, etc...Just a fyi. Take care.

Yeah, I knew about the signs... we started calling it that and because of it my wife showed up with a little sign for my birthday.

Something like this one.

Alright, more updates

got the ceiling cabinets framed up...
IMAG0764.jpg

And the doors for all the shelves cut out and put together. Glue is now drying...

and that is how the garage is sitting at the end of the day. Just gotta get those door frames solid and then sand it all down, cut out the shelves for the cabinet and then mount it to the ceiling.

looking good sir!

Maybe if I fill my garage up with Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon stock parts like you did my garage would look great too

The doors were solid enough to work with tonight so I was able to get them fitting nicely in all their spots. These are just mockups.

Still have a little more sanding on the frame as well as cutting and installing the shelf floors and then mount up the doors.

Then it's cleanup and staining.

The drawers don't need pulls due to there being recessed style handles on each one.

For the doors though, looking at probably going with some very simply style of handle... looks like a bar that is just bent into a handle...

stain is still up in the air. Going to test a few samples to figure that out once I get to that stage.

Nice garage. I put nylon feet under all of my benches and cabinets. That way if the floor ever gets wet it won't hurt the wood.

Yeah, going to look into some rubber "edging" or whatnot for the base of everything just for that reason.

Sooooo... Got two doors mounted up and just have to do some sanding to make it fit without any issues.

And this be the color that I am going to use... I still need to do some sanding on the cabinets to clean the wood up as well since I am now seeing things in the wood and the areas that are not stained right. This was the result of a three step staining process with two colors since I couldn't find one that was exactly what I wanted...

alright, got the frame of the upper cabinets hung. Going to be tricky to mount the doors, but I'll figure out something.

and this isn't the final color of the wood. Going to sand it all back down and change it up a bit. Turned out to be too dark up top and will be way to hard to match everything with the process I was using.

and how it sits today. Cleaned it up a bit and just waiting for some time to put the doors on. Then it's the fun of sanding everything back down.

Nice job on the wood work, looks great man.

That truck is sweet, too. Colorado or Canyon? I prefer GMC, myself, just because I don't like the look of the chevy bowtie.

Cabinets doors are installed and just need some minor sanding for the perfect fit.

Got everything cleaned up and somewhat organized.

Looks great, and it looks like it will be very sturdy. I'm extremely impressed. Router finishes everything off really nice.

Alright, so April didn't happen.

But September did... :D

I finally got some work done, not what I had planned, but it's done. Painted them instead of staining the whole thing and I think it turned out well.

Next step is to paint the walls, or at least come up with a design I want to run on there. Then paint it.

You had me at hello with the woodwork then lost me with the stain. Nice choice on the paint! That looks great!

I just read through this thread for the first time. As I was reading it, I kept saying to myself, "paint would look so much better". I really think you made a wise decision, especially since you had a mixture of pine and oak. Paint really goes well with the drawers as well. Also like the "pop" of the natural tops!

Good Job.

Thanks guys, still kicking myself that I didn't go with the lighter colored stain for the entire thing, but this will definitely work with what I have planned for the walls.

Hopefully I am able to hit the walls with a two tone, but instead of a traditional solid/straight line, I might give it a little "dramatic" touch with the colors I choose.

Who knows...

Then all I have is the floor...

Nice work. +1 on the paint......Looks like you've got plenty of space for some task lighting to be hidden under those cabinets and that shelf

It's the part that's gonna fall in the ocean when
"my intent is to build a garage that looks like it has thousands of dollars of work for not even a few hundred, from at least 10'."

I think you could go six feet and a beer and it'll look great.

I don't know what you're thinking for your walls but somehow I keep seeing a really thin red pinstripe on those cabinets somewhere. It wouldn't have to be much and would really make them pop. But however you do it, it'll be great.
