The roof is waterproof. The last few days the wind has been gusting to over 30mph so that made things exciting for this inexperienced roofer.

I should be able to start shingling tomorrow and hopefully be done early next week. After that I hope to not go on the roof for a long time.

I started shingles today, I’m about 1/4 done. For those of you worried about my back bringing the shingles onto the roof this is how it worked. I could load 4 bundles onto my pallet and lifted to the scaffolding beside the roof. Then I only had to lift 3ft onto the roof.

The South side of the roof is shingled and that also includes 3 roof vents. In addition I brought up the rest of the shingles. Tomorrow I’ll start the North side but likely won’t finish as I’ll have a shorter day.

Roof is DONE!!! Last step is to put the ridge cap on but that will likely wait until Tuesday. I’m happy to have this done because tomorrow is supposed to be unseasonably warm and that should allow the tar strips to setup. Also it is forecasted to rain Monday and it will be nice to be waterproof.

it was windy today! I’m happy to not go on the roof much more.

A lot of smaller items to update today:

I finished the ridge cap shingles.

Sent some crude electrical drawings to my electrician friend to start the process of figuring what I need/want. Feel feee to add your own comment

Washed and sealed the floor. I used a concrete driveway acrylic sealer. Honestly I know this is a hot topic on GJ but I didn’t want to spend much time or money on it now. Maybe in the future I’ll do epoxy but probably not. Photo is with two coats and I’ll put at least one more. I will see how it holds up.

Another good day working on the shop. Window and doors installed.

I made a framing mistake and the window opening was too short by 1 1/2”! I removed the sill and cut down the jack and cripple studs and only remaining problem was my damaged pride… lol

Tomorrow I’ll start on the overhead door which involves shuffling all the cars and trailers on the driveway to get the door out of the snowmobile trailer.

If all goes well I’ll be able to lock the workshop for the first time Friday before I go fishing for the weekend. Very exciting!

The overhead door is in place and should be operating as designed by the end of the day tomorrow. I also got the opportunity to move the hoist off the front yard and put it inside the shop.

The shop is looking great! Your making really good progress.

I hope you have better luck with the blueskin flashing tape than I did. I might as well have just left it off.

That isn’t exactly what I wanted to hear about the flashing tape. Truthfully I just followed a video off YouTube. For the doors I just brought the house wrap around the corners of the jambs. I’ll add drip edge above all openings.

The doors are locked for the first time. Grateful for the Weiser SmartKey system for getting all 4 locks to work with one key.

Also wound the spring for the overhead door. I know what I am doing and am confident in my skills but I have a healthy fear for that process.

Finally, I spoke to my electrician friend who is going to come by Tuesday and go over my wish list.

it is hard to believe that I haven’t updated for almost two weeks - I haven’t been working too much either.

All of the house wrap is up and seams are tapped. I also put drip cap over all the openings.

The second picture isn’t very good but you can see my overhead door finishing. Using a piece of fascia and some drip edge from the roof the opening is looking good. I still need to add the weatherstripping.

I picked up some used lockers for the shop. I’ll keep the two gray ones and the red one is for a friend.

I’ll use one locker for chemical/flammable storage and the other for typical locker use.

Again timing isn’t great but I couldn’t pass up this find.

Also got a pickup truck load of used railway ties to edge the driveway. They are only placed in position but will work great. I still need to finish landscaping next spring but it does have me rethinking my trailer parking.

Excuse my very crude paint work but this is where I would consider, without knowing how much room is actually available right there.

Nice build!

Similar proportions to mine (20x37). Faced with sqft restrictions like you, I went extra tall (19') and lean-to carports on both sides.

FWIW, I'm offsetting my lift to one side for more working room, and more mezzanine.

Good suggestion and I may end up using that spot if I need to.

Currently I have two trailers at home and the current vehicle that I am flipping. I have another trailer or two at the cabin that come home once in a while as well. It isn’t for a lack of driveway space (ask me in the middle of snow clearing!) but I’ll need to be strategic about what goes where so that there is always access to everything. Attached is a picture that shows both driveways and the tandem deep parking behind the trees. Note the white trailer in the picture is just parked on the grass now. Eventually, hopefully soon the truck and wagon will be parked in the attached garage - still full of building materials.

*and eventually I expect my boys to have multiple vehicles once they grow a little older.

That height will be valuable! I’m at max height and the lean-to would count towards max sq ft here.
Do you have a build thread on GJ?

You might have too many trailers...........nope

Looking at the photo of the driveway it appears they all could be angle parked starting at corner of shop out to the trees, then other side toward street if necessary.

Small update today.

Another milestone achieved, this morning I conditionally passed my framing inspection. This is a big deal for me since I didn’t really know what I was doing. Only issue is that I had top plate joints that didn’t line up with studs - I didn’t know it was a requirement. But the inspector gave me a simple fix by adding some blocking.

Other small update is that I met with my electrician and our plan is to get started next week. He made a list of all the major items and is pulling the permit and putting in the order for all the outlets and wire.

One major electrical consideration is for electric vehicle charging. We ordered a Tesla and it it should arrive soon. So we are going to add another line from the house panel to the attached garage that will be able to support up to 100amps of EV charging as required.

I’ve fallen behind on updates, sorry GJ.

My electrician started but I’m hoping he comes back soon so that power can be on and I can have the radiant heat commissioned.

Soffit and fascia are done, ladder work isn’t fun! I think that all of my exterior work on the building is done until spring, I’ll probably do a little more grading.

High CFM bathroom fan is installed through the wall and ready for the humidistat from the electrician. 10” fan, almost 290cfm should exchange the air in 30mins. I might need to add an air intake for make up air

Tiny bit of insulation and plywood for the panel and boiler board.

14’ of hand digging a 36” trench is pretty close to my limit before using a machine. *the corrugated pipe is the drain pipe from the house.

A little bit more electrical work has been done since the last update but not picture worthy. Hopefully my electrician comes back to finish the job soon because I’d like to insulate and turn the heat on.

This morning a friend came over and helped me stand up the hoist and put in the anchor bolts. If you look back you will see my loop drawing that shows where I pre planned for the hoist and kept the pex lines away. I still have a lot of work on the hoist, cables hydraulic lines etc… but cannot wait to use it.

I’m slowly running out of work while I wait for my electrician to finish. But yesterday I did work on the final grading of the yard. Surprisingly I was able to spread almost all of the dirt I had piled up before starting the pad in the spring. I should now be able to get my deposit back from my lot grading permit which also set the elevation of my concrete floor.

My electrician is having some supply shortages just like the rest of the world so I have some extra grace. In the meantime he was able to temporarily rig 60amps to the shop which should be enough to run the boiler. Hopefully I can have the HVAC company come out next week and get it set up and turned on. I also have some power going to my attached garage to charge our new electric car so that is nice.

B5A2ED8A-25B8-43C3-B156-D2C863E094A6.jpeg

Don’t touch any wires while we wait for the new panel in the house basement to arrive.

I installed the air distribution system for the shop. Using pex line I have 4 drops throughout the shop. 2 on the South (workbench) wall, 1 on the hoist, and 1 on the North (tools on stands) wall. The air compressor will go on top of the future office area and is also wired for 220 whenever I’m able to upgrade the compressor.

I’ll put a block of wood on the stud to mound the drop ear fitting to.

my plan is to start insulation tomorrow.

I found the leaks in my air system. Each of the drip ear fittings are leaking at the 1/2” to 1/4” bushings. Any suggestions? I used traditional Teflon tape and that has always worked for me. Should I use pipe dope, or gas tape?

You could try the paste type sealant. That usually works pretty well for me compared to tape. Especially if the fittings are a little rougher like those cast elbows.
