Hello everyone. My name's Eddie and I've been reading through posts on here for a while. I just retired from the Army and it's finally time to plan and start my garage build. I have a good amount of space in the back yard so I want to build as big as possible. Being that I'm retired now the money is not what it use to be so I'll have to take it in phases.

I have a guy coming by tomorrow to let me know what I'm looking at to lay the foundation. I'm hoping I can go 40x80 but I have to figure out my actual property line to make sure I stay 25' away from it. The goal is to be able to at least have 4 garage doors and be able to park two cars front to back.

Here are a couple of pics. The first one is pointing towards the back of the property. It starts slopping down towards our pond which serves as our shooting range and we plan to start fishing in at some point. I plan to put a garage door on the backside so we can hang out in the garage while we shoot and stuff. The second pic is pointing toward the neighbors yard. The little trees in the middle are a make shift property line which I need to get a definite placement on.

Anyways, I'm excited. Let me know if you have any pointers or beginners mistakes to avoid.

40x80 should definitely fit 2 cars end to end. Looks like a nice peoce of land.

Thanks. I found this picture last night and want to go with something like this. I'd like to use the open car port area to wash the cars.

I haven’t updated anything on here but now that I have some progress I thought I’d share some pics. I got the pole barn erected a couple of months back and now we’re preppong for concrete. Looking forward to getting this thing enclosed.

Very Nice Zoldier!
You're about 25 miles from me and looks like you are even going the same route I did construction wise! Are those trusses from Jordan up in the panhandle(well, they are resold by a few other places but..)..

Are your poles concreted in? Per the manufacturer of the truss, he specs 1 yard of concrete in each hole to prevent uplift.

Since you are early on, if you have any questions let me know. I built this between 2015 and 2016. I paid to have the slab done and well as paid for some extra hands when doing the trusses, but everything else was done by myself with some help from my dad. Idea started as pole construction with metal sides, but progressed into something different.

Very nice BoostedOne. Very similar to what I'm going for. Concrete is coming in on Friday. I'm going to start enclosing it little by little after it settles. What did you use for siding? My wife wants it to match the house so I'll need to use that on the front side at least.

Oh, and the barn came from Best Built Barns. They're near the pan handle so probably same as the company you mentioned. They installed it for me and I'm having the concrete done as well. I hope to do the rest of it on my own.

Got a little excited thinking about the garage so I started playing with layout ideas.

Yep, I believe Best Built(or is it Better Built) buys the trusses from Jordan.

So what size did you end up going with? In your original post you said 40x80, but 5 pairs of posts would be 40x40, if you are on 10' spacing? I cant remember the max spacing, is it 12'?

Dont forget to leave plenty of space for shelves. Mine was pretty much filled before I even finished it, LOL...

The siding is called HardiPlank. It comes in 7 1/4"x 12' planks. Its a concrete based product, so no fire, no termite problems like wood. It also doesn't dry out like vynil and looks 100x nicer. Depending the other options you have in mind, I would consider doing the whole thing that way. Simple metal panel walls(ugly IMHO), cost about $4 linear foot for painted ones(~$1.33 sq ft). A Hardi Plank is ~$6.50, and covers 6" vertically($1.09/sq ft). 7/16 ZIP wall sheeting was like $14($0.43/sq ft).
You still have to buy trim boards and paint it, but the price difference is still not that much over steel siding. Its a lot more than vynil siding but lasts a hell of alot longer.

My walls are 2x6 on 16" centers(maybe 24). EVERYTHING that is exposed to the elements is Hardi products BTW. Every trim board. The fascias along the roof. The soffits. Its all Hardi.

One tip I will give you is if you are going to build this out yourself, is go down to 84 Lumber on Mellonville in Sanford and tell them you are building a garage the size of a house, and ask them to set you up on an account, and that if they give you pricing better than you could get at the box store, you will get your supplies from them. I talked to a guy there named Scott Pope, he always did me good. I paid like 6.50 for the HardiPlank. HD and Lowes wanted 7.25 to 7.50 for example. I have 36x50" vynil, double paned, wind load rated windows, they were like $120 each if I remember. The other nice thing about dealing with them is if you are going to go pick up the supplies there(rather than have it delivered), you drive right up to the material stacks and they help load it into the truck/trailer. Not like HD or Lowes where you load a cart, then go load the truck. Cheaper and so much more convenient!

After the posts and roof I had my first shipment delivered. Considering the weight, I'm glad I did, LOL...

Oh yeah..
Have you been up on the roof and walked around yet? Granted, I forgot to put the tek screws between the roof panels on until after it was done(at first only installed all the screws to the purlins) but when I would get up on the roof at the peak if I shook my body from side to side I could make the roof shake with me which made me uneasy due to the winds. This was after tying all my purlins together with 2x6's in a diagonal.

Maybe I over did it, but I tied the top 2 purlins together with a 2x8, and then framed between the floor and top two purlins with 2x6's for a distance of 10 or 12 feet on each end of the building. The framing was then covered on both sides with 5/8" OSB to give it the shear strength.

Zoldier, what software did you use to "play" around with layouts? I would like to do the same thing for my proposed build in the coming months. Thanks!

I ended up going with a 40x60. 12' spacing on the posts. I decided I wanted a little more spacing between the pool and the building so I compromised.

The front of my house is that hardyplank stuff I think. Didn't know the name of it though. I'm going to start with the backside and work my way around toward the front. The garage doors will be the expensive part since we're looking to do five of them and would really like see through one. I'm retired now so that might take a while budget wise. Lol.

I appreciate the pictures. That helps me get an idea of how to get started. I've never really done construction like this before.

I've been looking at concrete sealers and it looks like I need to let the concrete settle for 30 days before applying it. I figured I'll do that before I start putting the cars back in there in case they leak anything.

Finally got the concrete done. Going to wait 30 days to seal it before I put the cars back in.

If you're bored sometimes and Im around youre welcome to come by and check things out. Not saying Im an expert or even knew what Im doing, we kind of figured it out as we went. But maybe it could help give you some ideas on what to do or how to do it better.

Patryk, I’m just over $20k so far.

Thanks Boosted. I might take you up on that. I’m no expert either but I manage pretty well once I see something.
