Anyone do this or seen it ? I know it could end up being a big waste of time and money.
But if it keeps me busy in the shop its worth it!
I am thinking about building some low profile rear mount mufflers to fit where
the tailpipes would normally be on my 65 Cutlass.
For those knowing about these A-body GM cars there is just enough room
for tailpipes so it would be a challenge but thats good.
The real tough part would be coming up with something that doesn't ****.
:lol_hitti
I am hoping I might end up with something that sounds a little quieter than
say glasspacks . It would be easy to copy flowmaster type design, but I am not fond of that sound. So I may add some sound deadener .
Corsa makes some cool designs. So does Spintech . Of course I could copy the good ol Turbo muffler design .
Ideas welcome !

That sounds like it might be a fun project... Some engineering hurdles:
-Sound deadening material: Fiberglass, or something like steel wool mat? Fiberglass will lose it's deadening ability over time; steel mat should be less prone, but cost is a factor here. You could buy a bunch of those ss scrubbing pads at the grocery and use them as your sound deadening! ;)
-general construction materials: how do you put it together? What materials do you use?

The main question here is why? I am totally down with building my own exhaust, but I would probably buy the muffler. I am cool with goofy projects though. Good luck!

One of those get all excited and study and go buy one anyways !
I was looking at spintraps site and they make a dual inlet /outlet that might fit behind the axle like alot of Camaro's have .
But there picture is wrong.......
http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintech/spintechindex.asp

I built a quick box (at work but don't tell) to see if it would fit .
I'll have to remove the transverse resonator thats there now and see.
Maybe tonite ?

I still WILL build muffler (s) for you know whats and grins but might be for a differant car.(of which I have some choices)

We did it all the time on the farm. They wanted $450 for a muffler for our skid steer. It cost us $15 of pipe, and 2 hours time to make our own that was quieter than the factory one.

You do not need a stinking muffler.................I once gutted a set of flowmasters and closed them back up and mounted them.;)

Spintec's are too tin-y (?) sounding to me. I would be interested to see how this turns out. How are you going to judge the back pressure?

Did you copy the worn out original or make your own design?

Thanks for the Spintech opinion, the sound bites on the web are not all that helpful a 5.0 EFI Mustang is going to sound differant than my 455 BBO .
Just about have to hear them in person on a similar car.
I've heard enough Flowmasters to know for sure there not for me.
My luck what I make will sound like Flowmasters or worse :bounce:
(no offense to flowmaster owners to each there own)

As far as backpressure ? I could weld a couple of bungs to check that ? I sure wont be building a flow bench ............OR ?

Closest think I have done to building a muffler was to cut open the side of a large truck muffler (over $800 for a new one) to find out if I could fix a loud rattle that was inside. I could I removed the turbo impeller I found inside it from a previous turbo then rewelded the baffle walls and reformed and welded it closed. Finding mufflers to work in a unusual applications is something I often have done on cars and light trucks. I have many times browsed the muffler sizes and figured what would flow and work in an altered or unavailable application.

Personally - I don't think the cardboard is going to hold up.

I could be wrong.

Oh your wrong ! I could use my paper mache' skills or shamwow wrap or ? :bounce:

Wow those are artforms ! Hope they work and sound as good as they look !

But good info thanks

most of it is "engineer level writing" and it reads like a text book, but it may be worth a look
Thanks I'll consider that.

About 10 years ago I put a SBC 400 in a 92 Camaro for a friend. Well built motor, everything was new or rebuilt, pan to carb, decent cam, heads, intake, new carb ect... When we were done, we decided it wasn't loud enough. So I had the bright idea of gutting the muffler, one pipe in, 2 out for a wanna be look like duel exhaust factory ****.

Didn't take long and I figured out they were spot welded together and about impossible to just cut it open and gut it real quick. So I made a whole new muffler. Plasma cut the end plates, welded on stubs just like the stock exhaust and used a slip roll and rolled some 16ga. SS to the shape of the end caps, nothing inside, no difusser tubes, no glass packing, nothing.

He was happy! Had a tingy echo sound at idle, pleanty quiet at idle and cruise, very distictive sound, reminded me of a Harley, only 1/2 as loud, AT IDLE. When he would he would get on it and go flying down the road, :) nice and loud! Best sounding burn outs yet. Nobody would believe how quite it was at idle and how loud it was at 6K. Mission accomplished. Haven't made another since, but I REALLY want to make them for my Mustang. Maybe this summer...

i'm not sure if you where going to fabricate your own from scratch or wanted to buy parts to build your own, but Megs has these kits I always thought where cool. Muffler Kits

Cool site! I just found it because of all the hits coming from the link here. Besides the muffler kits there are also full race mufflers up 5" internal diameter. We've had a lot of folks using the 3" core build your ownon the 572/650 BBC crate motors with great results.

Modify glasspack mufflers?

I'm building a custom SS exhaust system based on a Magnaflow 2.5" tubing, 4" round 22" long muffler, located along side the driveshaft. I also have a cavity where the stock resonator was that isn't quite big enough for a real muffler (max 12" long body) and I don't expect a "race muffler" to do anything useful. I'm considering picking up another magnaflow (14" long) cutting it open and shortening it by 2".

I know they stuff these then weld the end caps in the factory but I'm still concerned about burning the glass out of it when welding (TIG) it back up and making it next to useless. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

Btw, the car is a supercharged Miata track day / race car.

Thanks,
Jeff
