Hi all,

i am planning to build a garage this April, 24' wide x 32' Long detached in my back yard.

i will need to put footings 4' deep and i will go 1' above grade and then build an 8' tall 2x4 wall. this will give me 9' ceiling height.

i plan to go 2 doors either 10' wide or 9' any suggestions?
1 man door (if looking at the garage, it will be on left side)

1 window also on the side with man door.

Waiting to get a final quote on the concrete work and get drawings then will be applying for my permit (living in Ontario)

If anyone has any suggestions for the garage door sizes please let me know, currently i am leaning towards the 10' but i am not sure how good it will look with only 16'' on each side of the door.

Like you I'm building a garage the spring in Ontario. I have a three garage variation drawn and a four car. I really suggest you sketch it out getting as close to scale as possible on paper and look at which one works best for you. It really does make a dramatic difference in the appearance. Where abouts in Ontario will you be building? I will be in the Kingston area.

Ps - you may want to check lift clearances, at 9' you're close, as 9' 6" you're good.

i will be building in London Ontario, i never planned for a lift as i thought you would need a much higher ceiling than 9' and i did not want to go higher.

if i go 9' wall with 4/12 roof i will be under the 13' building code for only being 2' away from property line.

Thanks for the info something to think about if its only 6'' might be worth it.

Sounds almost identical to my garage. Mine is 24w x 34d with a 16' door. I hate the 16' door. Wish I had two 9' doors. My man door and window are on the same side, left side as you're looking at the overhead door. I really wish my garage was 26' wide though. After filling it with all of my tools and stuff, I can really only pull one vehicle in. The extra 2' in width would make it comfortable with two vehicles. Any reason you're going with 9' ceilings? That's not tall enough for a lift, Just more area to heat.

awesome thanks!

i am thinking 9' as it will give me a bit more room i dont plan to put a lift and just thought it would feel a bit bigger then only having 8'

If you are going to use it as a two car garage - two 9' garage doors will be fine. I used a 9" and 8" because I have to angle my car into the larger door. If you are going to use one side as a workshop frame it for a garage door but install a patio door for natural light. 24 X 32 is a nice size till it is full if you can go up to 10% of property size for out buildings without variances do it now rather than later. At least you have fences to prevent the neighbors from measuring your footings and complaining to the inspectors about overages.

My new shop is similar in size , 30 wide x 26 deep (outside dimensions). With two 9 x 8 doors on the 30ft wall. Myself I like having the space between the cars rather than at the ends. But that would depend on what you will be using the space for. 10Ft doors would be better for sure but you would want no less than 9ft.

I have a 24'W x30'L. One door. LOVE having one door. I feel that the space is more useful. You can park car(s) at an angle and get wide stuff right out the middle (snowblower, bikes, M/C, etc.). Just a thought.

I have a garage the same size with one 10' door , it works okay but a do -over would be 2- 9' doors. in the winter it would be nice to put 2 vehicles inside. 2 10' doors would be cramped.

Sounds like my garage.(avatar). My doors are 8x8( got a super deal on them).I have put an F-150 in there by foldng up one side mirror. My wife has no problem putting her car in,so I would think 9 wide doors would be comfortable, unless you have a dually or something.

You need more than 16" on each side of the door for shear reinforcement to keep the building from racking in the wind. Or, you need to go to extreme lengths to support the side walls from tipping and racking. I've seen a lot of garage failures from failing to take this into account.

The wall sheathing acts to hold the studs together as a flat sheet, without twisting and racking.

If I add up what you are doing correctly: 24' width. Assuming 2x4 walls, that leaves you 23'5" clear between the outside walls.

If you're using 2x6, make that 23'1". Take away 9 feet twice, leaves 5'1". Take 2 feet between the two doors, and you have 18 1/2" of wall at the corners to brace up the outside walls.

I'd much prefer that to be 36", but can do it with 24". If I only had 18", I'd want to glue and screw plywood shear panels both inside and outside, and make sure the panels are L shaped and continue over the door opening, and that you shear nail the panels.

I prefer wider doors myself, so I'd go with the 9 foot if I could. Just take into account the proper construction of shear panels at the corners.

I have a 24' X 34' three car garage with one 18' door. I wouldn't have it any other way, easy in and out. It works for me!
