Could be the particulates. Could be that most residential vacuums are not designed around continuous service.
For my part, I've got at least 10 hours of blasting on a well used upright bagless I picked up for $15. So far, so good.
In the woodshop, I have a 1.5HP dust collector motor that I'm using with a Thein baffle and pleated filters with great success. Hardly anything gets to the filters, so long as the collection can isn't overfilled, though more sanding dust gets past than sawdust. Even so, the 1" pleated pre-filter picks up so much, that I can see nothing on the 4" HEPA filter behind it. I just bang out the 1" filter outside when I empty the bucket.
