Ordered a winch this morning to help load it in the trailer through the side door. I plan on mounting it down low between the rear wheels.

Next update will probably be later next weekend. I hope to start tacking together the top structure for the bench.

Some more progress from today.

-Starting to work on the bench frames.

-Mocking up with the box
IMAG0391.jpg

-Many hours later in which I took no pictures. Here's a picture of both the box and the cabinet installed. I'm debating putting some pockets or a ledge over the rear tire for some extra storage.
IMAG0393.jpg

-Tabs that locate and hold the box in place.
IMAG0394.jpg

-Storage behind the tool box. Jack fits nicely. I'll skin with 16 gauge plate.

-Winch installed under the rear cabinet.

That's it for now. Ran out of welding gas so I can't go further until I can get across town and pick some more up. Also need some angle to start building the bench frame. Getting closer.

The angle clamps came from Amazon. Search "corner clamps" and you'll see lots of options.

Thanks! Hopefully I'll have it all mocked up this weekend ready for dis-assembly and final welding.

Sweet build!
Love the idea...I want one too!
Guess I better learn how to weld, and subscribe to this thread for future reference!

Stopped by Home Depot yesterday and picked up 6 ft of vinyl running I'll use for the bench top.

The rest of the steel required is ordered for Friday pickup. I'm out of the house on Saturday, however plan to be back in the garage on Sunday working on the remaining framing.

Things left to do.

1. Tack the work bench top frame in place.
2. Weld taps for mounting the end cabinet.
3 Remove the toolboxes and finish weld.
4. Skin the shelves with 16 gauge sheet.
5. Build small shelf over rear fender.
6. Final test fit in trailer to determine tie down positions.

Also, need to decide what color to paint the frame. After getting a few quotes, I'll probably be using powder coat as for the price it's just not worth the time involved to do the prep and spray it.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks!

Backside of the trailer hub. I'd like to look at the possibility of putting disc brakes on the front, but will probably need to have a machine shop make me some custom rotors.

I was rereading your thread. The rotor thing made me think you might consider a mountain bike rotor system. They're manually activated on a hand lever and based on your skill level I would think easy to adapt.

Here's an example.

Of course the cheapest route would be to scour craigslist or a yard sale for a cheap old bike and repurpose the parts.

Just a thought.

I think I have the brakes figured out.

I'm going to use Wilwood PS1 calipers. They're cheap, and have very thin which will allow them to squeeze between the wheel and the spindle. I looked at a few other types, but they had much deeper pistons which caused some interference issues.

I'm going to make my own rotors out of 3/16 hot rolled plate. I'll cut the OD with a vertical bandsaw and a jig, and cut the inside with a hole saw. If I preheat the hub and rotor in the oven, they should weld together ok, especially for a low speed application.

For the master cylinder I'm going to use another Wilwood part, simply because they make one with a built in line lock.

Really, the biggest mystery at this point is what color to powdercoat everything. I'm thinking white would look sharp, but not sure how hard it will be to keep looking nice.

Great idea. The slim profile of the bike rotor system is what made me suggest it. I don't know what color your race car is, but I would try to match or complement it. Of course you can never go wrong with white.

Nice ride! Personally I would match the navy, but I'm partial to darker "frames" and navy may not work well with the red boxes. If the tool boxes stay red, then white frames provide a nice contrast. Alternatively you could rock a red white and blue USA theme to support your Blue Angels C-130 inspired livery. Love the logo on the hood by the way. [emoji106]

I had a thought today that if I found a good match, it might look good all in red. I'll have to carefully look at the color chips when I drop it off for powder coating.

Nice looking car, I'm actually building a 1999 spec miata myself this winter.
Really want to see how you end up skinning the pit cart.

Picked up the rest of the steel today, and swapped out my empty shielding gas cylinder.

There wasn't much time left before dinner, but I did get the pieces for the bench cut and tacked into place. I'm at a data analysis seminar all day tomorrow but on Sunday I plan to:

Finish the bench frame and back splash.
Build the shelf over the front wheels.
Add an additional left over the right rear tire.
start skinning the shelves and back.
weld the tabs on to mount the cabinet.

When they're all mocked up, the toolboxes will come off for final welding, and then it's off to powder coat.

More progress from today. I have another 1-2 days and it'll be ready to go off to the powder coater.

Tacked the rest of the frame together.
IMAG0399.jpg

Frame fully welded and all the welds facing the outside ground smooth.
IMAG0400.jpg

Many hours later, after doing the sheeting. Angle welded in to hold the jack, and also the black ballast plates I use to adjust the racecar.
IMAG0401.jpg

Forward shelf, with stringer to help stop things from falling off in transit. Still not sure what I'm going to store here.
IMAG0402.jpg

Back splash. Ground smooth as there will be an aluminum trim piece that covers it.
IMAG0403.jpg

View from the back. The lower piece under the back splash is where the power receptacle will go.
IMAG0404.jpg

Tabs to help secure the toolbox. These will probably be rivets, with bolts used on the upper mount.
IMAG0405.jpg

Things remaining before powdercoat:
-Construct small shelves over the rear wheels
-add a bumper (I'm using a loading dock rubber stopper)
-drill holes for the power receptacle.
-add tie downs
-finish the tie rods, and build the T-bar

Excited for you. I'm sure you're getting that itch to see completion!

The list of things to do is definitely trending the right way. I need to push and finish the rest of the fabrication this weekend so it can go to powder coat on Monday. Then it's just assembly.

Received calipers and the master cylinder today. The calipers are nice and small and should fit great behind the wheels.

The plan this weekend is to get the fabrication finished so the cart can go off to powder coat on Monday morning.

Those are some serious calipers. Way more beefy than my mountain bike brake suggestion! You won't have any problem stopping with those babies.
