On a downside note, I was starting up the car today to load it, and my son said: "Hey daddy, steam!" Radiator has a pin-hole leak, so now I'm in a scramble to get a radiator shipped and installed by Wednesday night.

That pit cart looks fantastic! I'm betting you are going to be fielding a ton of questions as to where did you buy it and wanna build me one?

Lost the rad huh? Time to build a spare parts/crash cart maybe?

Give it up pal. Nobody is impressed. Your arrogance makes it so none of us care.

I just got caught up and would love to see a track side update. Really a great build. Congrats and I hope it worked well for you.

Looks like a fun project and it turned out great!

I raced decades ago with much more simple arrangements but really enjoyed the organizational side of the hobby (at least it was for me). To this day I always pay a lot of attention to the setups teams have in the paddock and appreciate the work that goes into it.

Lmao. Dude, your list is what exactly, a ***** shrinker? Please do not reply, just stop, no one cares. You have nothing good to say, don't, just don't. Your comments do not further the forum mind set, and just might make some people feel bad about the hard work they put into, and share, their projects.

It takes a special person to criticize another man's hard work. Does putting someone down make you feel good? Again don't answer, just don't, it was a rhetorical question.

I love this thread! great Work and you should be proud. I race and I've been thinking about doing something similar for a while now. I'm inspired.

Vettex2 racers who go around announcing what titles they've won and how good they are a just one mechanical failure away from embarrassment in my experience. Quit while you're behind.....you're just being plain rude.

I read these threads just to enjoy the craftsmanship and creativity. Great job. I want one, and I haven't moved my roll around boxes in at least 15 years.

That cart is Yankee Ingenuity at its finest. Been following the thread like a soap opera. You dont know what going to happen until the next episode.

I figured on more than one occasion that the OP was done with the build. But nope, he throws us a curve with another neat feature on the next post.

Great Job!!

I like it as well Great job. I built a cart for work this off season using the same kit... And have built several in the past... Contemplating turning my krl7023 into a pit cart so I may actually be able to sell it.... Since someone is throwing accomplishments around..lol
1999,2000,2001,2003 nascar Winston west champion mechanic(gears trans)
14 wins in the Nascar craftsman/camping world truck series ( won first race at Eldora)
9 wins in the nascar nationwide series and 2013 champion

Point is it's a **** move to knock someone's hard work as mentioned before.... No matter how cool you think you are...my accomplishments are nothing compared to most

Just out of curiosity (and not to be insulting) how much stuff do you need in the hot pits these days for a 20+/- minute spec Miata race? We ran GT1 for 15 years and never took a single tool to the hot pits except during practice. The car was very sorted and reliable and we figured if we got a flat, by the time we got it changed we'd be at least 2 laps down, so we didn't bother.

Looking forward to following the pitbull build!

I don't think he ever said anything about hot pits - in a 20 minute race there aren't any pit stops. I would assume it's just for general use during the weekend.

That's exactly it. This is a lot easier to load in my trailer and roll around a bumpy paddock than a traditional toolbox with casters.

So...

I'm thinking of converting the pit cart to be self powered. It would only be for loading up the ramp, where I'm currently use the winch. Doing some simple measurements I'm considering attaching a sprocket to the winch itself and using it to drive the cart. That way, I can retain the ability to place it in idle for moving it around on flat ground where a motor is not needed.

I doubt that idea will last long.
The battery powered ones I have seen are pushing themselves evrrywhere they go.

I wouldn't use the HF winch motor, they are not great motors to begin with. It will likely not live long if you decide to drive across a parking lot.

Wheelchair motors are the way to go. They can be had for between $50 and $250 dollars and can be controlled with a simple PWM controller ($5-$50 depending on features) They are continuous duty motors and something like a Jazzy is rated for 600lbs.

Add a couple of batteries and your probably into it a couple hundred dollars.

In addition to being able to drive your cart around having a couple of deep cycle batteries on board opens up possibilities like lights, inverters,a radio, maybe a blender :).

It's actually a Superwinch, but I agree that using a winch motor in a continuous duty cycle is going to result in a short life.

In my case, the motor would only be for loading or unloading, so it really would be a minimum expense type modification.

Any suggestions on sources for cheap sprockets, axles, and carrier bearings?

Coming in super late on this one. I ran across this thread searching for build ideas for my cart. You have some excellent fab skills. My question pertains to your spindle set-up and why you crossed your tie rod ends in the center instead of connecting them to the handle base on their respective sides. Certainly not a criticism. More just trying to put something together in my head and didn't know if this was done for a specific reason. Thanks for the great thread and detail.

It's done for Ackermann steering geometry, in which the inside turning wheel turns tighter than the outside wheel.

Very nice Job!!!!! After seeing your cart, I am now thinking of taking an Electric Golf Cart and robing the parts needed to build an electric one that I can sit upright or stand up on the front end and steer it. However, I have a Ton of other project I have to get completed before I can entertain this idea any further. Keep up the great work !!!!!!

Here are some idea someone else had that keep running through my mind:
That first video is the greatest toolbox/mobile workshop I've ever seen. Even has a mini fridge. The 2nd is the common man's version. Lol!

Any updates? I'm addicted to this thread.

No updates. I mounted a 30" monitor on the box to for data review at the track, but I haven't made any other changes.

This winter's project will be "restoring" my golf cart, to include a paint match to the race car.
