Building a Pit Cart

Oddly enough I was thinking about this thread today. Think I'm going to build one for myself.

If there's still anyone lurking around that doesn't get why:

A. All the tools needed to maintain the car will be in the cart. Rather than having to remember what to reload into the trailer every week the cart will get unloaded and worked out of at the shop. There's nothing worse than getting to the track and realizing you left something in the shop box.

B. The guy we raced with this summer had a 30 ft trailer with all the tools at the front. Counting the ramp door that's about an 80 ft round trip walk to get a tool and if you're the guy up to your elbows in the car you can't just nicely say to your helper "Also grab..." cuz he's in the trailer and can't hear you.

I'll do my own thread if I build one. Thanks for the template.

So after using the pit cart for about a year and half I'm thinking of adding just a few more drawers. I recently built this welding cart out of an end cabinet.

I'm thinking of buying another end cabinet, and cutting it down so it probably only is the height of the skinny drawer section, and then mounting it on the right side of the workbench on the cart. I've got a plastic 3 drawer organizer there right now that this would replace.

Other than that, I've been extremely happy with the cart. It makes the process of loading up for the track significantly simpler than in the past.

Hey guys,
Here's the one I make:
Motorized is definitely the way to go.
Drives right up the car hauler ramp
12 V power also runs LED work lights.
Later...Doug

I just found this thread, and all I can say is wow. Duncan, you have some really nice fab skills. That cart is just awesome. Love the welding cart to. I made one out of an old file cabinet, but version 2.0 might look similar to yours, or close to it.

Wow I just read through your build. Impressive and well done, thanks for sharing!
How is the HF box holding up in the current configuration?

No complaints about the HF box.

Haven't made any updates to the Pit Cart since I last updated this thread. It still works great.

I know I'm digging up an older thread here, but I just read through this whole thing. I have a strange fascination with pit carts despite the fact that I simply don't need one at all. I love your design. Your cart looks really nice. If the temptation ever overwhelms me I hope you won't mind if I borrow your template?

Bump bc a lot of the pics have gone missing. Great work, but would love to see the other pics. Thinking about doing something like this for a friend's Champcar team.

Thank you for the thread!!

Thanks for posting the link. It allowed me to catch up on the photos I missed. Great job on the build. Anything that you would change on the next one now that you have had it for a race season?

I don't think I'd make any substantive changes if I build another one. That said, I'm not racing as much, and thinking about selling the cart and replacing it with a traditional toolbox.
