So i am taking baby steps to build my garage. I am close to having all the cash to get the concrete and shell done. I wont take a loan or refinance. I will have to drive my POS a little longer.

I just received the site plans and will submit them soon to the city.

I am having trouble either visualizing or accepting the fencing setup for my dogs.
In the drawing i added, bold red is existing 8ft privacy fence. Thin red is what i think i will have to do to enclose the yard.
Bold dark blue are windows and light blue is the man-door from the existing 9x25 single garage.
I am thinking i may move the mandoor to the rear of the existing garage to make the entry to the yard easier.
Also not sure if the garage mandoor should go on front or side.

Thoughts, opinions,concerns are all welcome.
The garage will be a 24x24 with 9ft walls.

***EDIT: the Bold red at the front of the drawing will have to be taken out. I don't have room for a swing gate and I am not the type of person that likes to get of the car and open and close a fence gate manually.

So it will have to be moved to a better location to enclose a doggy area.

I'm not understanding why you need the additional fence added in. I looks like your existing fence already surrounds the rear of the property to keep the pets in and everything out of sight.

You'll just need to put fencing from the house the the right corner of the garage and bring the fence to meet the other side at either the front or back depending on where you prefer access.

What type of ceiling will you have? You may want a lift someday. Consider a cathedral ceiling?

As for the man door on the new garage, I would put it on the side. That will open up some floor space. What size garage door? I have 16' and wish I had 18'

You are going to hate that dog fence when you go to pull car in or out.

First of all, I commend you on not wanting to refinance or take a loan out for your shop. I ran into a setback when the wife and I bought our home as well and opted to not borrow but to just buckle down, save, work extra and pay with cash. Glad I did and although it took me about 4 years longer to build the shop, I wouldn't do it any other way looking back.

As for not having enough room for a swing style gate, would you be able to make a sliding/rolling gate? I originally had two swinging gates spanning my 14' width shop approach and after many ordeals with the coach and enclosed trailer backed up and interfering, I decided to fabricate a rolling/sliding gate that opens up behind the house. I like it much, much better now.

Just a thought if you have the space.

Mike.

a friend had a house with a detached garage similar to what you have there.

the PO to the house built a large swing gate with a wheel on one end that was setup such that when you swug it closed it was in front of the garage doors and allowed the dogs access to the area in front of the garage.
when you swug it open it closed up against the garage so the area in front of the garage door was clear to pull cars in and the dons were restriced to the backyard only

yeah, milling over ideas and plans. I might just build the dang garage and plan the fencing when I am done. Not so good at visualizing stuff.

it is planned as a 16 ft door as of today. And as much as I would love to have cathedral ceilings, we have ZERO storage in our home now. so the garage was going to have attic space for Warden's many many many holiday decorations (even ones that don't exist yet).

I also decided on the door on the front. With the main door being offset it allows for work space to one side without having to move around vehicles. And it just didn't look right to me with just a big blank wall on the front.

yes Mike,

I decided to treat the garage like I have treated everything else (well aside from the house itself. No way I could hang onto 180K).
If I cant pay for it in cash, then I don't need it. I tend to fall behind in payments on stuff due to it breaking and questioning why should I pay for something that hasn't lasted the life of the payments.
