Bushing for bench grinder

Hello all!

I recently purchased a 8" Delta bench grinder and put on buffing and wire wheels. When I put the them on I found out that both wheels were too narrow to tighten down and they were very close to the motor. I went to the hardware store and pick up a bunch of washers for a temporary fix. See below. Does anyone know where I can pick up a bushing or have one made? The shaft is 5/8".

I also used washers and haven't had a single issue. I wouldn't worry about trying to source or make a bushing.

McMaster Carr. But honestly I don't see any problems with the washers either.

that same hardware store probably has 5/8 bronze bushings, and pvc or steel pipe.

In the REAL hardware stores (not the big box stores) check the draw isle that has all the odd ball stuff.

The problem with washers is for any given size, the hole is a larger diameter than that stated size. Works great for a stationary fitting, but on an arbor that's spinning at 3600 rpm or faster, that slop induces vibration. Now use four washers--one on each side of your two wheels--and you most likely will tighten them down while gravity is pulling them all in the same direction and now your grinder starts beating itself to death. McMaster's bushings will cost more but when you tune your grinder (yes, you need to tune it) you can rest a coin on the grinder and it will sit there.

I think you need spacers not bushings. A bushing goes inside the hole in the wheel and fits tightly on the shaft. A spacer goes between the side of the wheel and the tightening nut.

IF indeed it's a bushing you come to find out you need,
My Lathe should be back up and running with in 2 weeks, and lf you do need a Bushing
I will make you one.

I CRS these days, forget what the application was,
but worked out quite well!!!!!.................

Just get a 5/8 shaft collar and use it. Most hardware stores would know exactly what that is. They have 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 in the same assortment box. You don't need to tighten down the set screw but leave it in and use lock tite on it to keep it from vibrating out. Problem solved.

If you want the proper item, the correct term is arbor shim. McMaster Carr.
