Here here! Bought a Magnum used in the early 90's and have literally beat the shat outta that drill!
To do everything most perfectly and easily, you do need more than one drill. I agree with others here that the corded Milwaukee Magnum will probably do more things well than any other, and last nearly forever. Not cheap. A slightly smaller one with 3/8 capacity can handle all the regular tasks.
If I knew I would be drilling into light masonry, I would get a hammer drill, of a kind small enough to do other work as well. These can fail if they are abused, though.
I do not recommend cordless as the only drill, but the one I use is the "old" DeWalt 18v. I think they make good products.
The only drills I have ever had fail unexpectedly were Craftsman, supposedly heavy duty ones - pieces of junk in my view. They were used lightly and still died.

Very true and great advice.
Personally I think the Milwaukee cordless tools are not nearly as balanced or ergo as Makita. I agree Milwaukee has lots of tools in the m12/m18 line but they just do not feel as good in my hands as Makita and Snap cordless tools.
I just dont think Milwaukee or Dewalt has ever been on the same level as Makita when it comes to cordless tools.
I love Milwaukee corded tools esp the drills and sawzalls.
See and I am on the opposite side of the spectrum. I don't think Makita cordless is as good the Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless. I have owned all 3 and Milwaukee has been the best followed by DeWalt.

Buying a clean, lightly used 1/2" Magnum is OK.
