I found a guy off of Craigslist down in CT that has some laboratory cabinets for sale. All different cabinet, drawer combos and all metal! he has about 100 of these!.. He also has some glass upper cabinets that look really nice. The upper and lower cabinets are 48" wide sections, the lowers are 22" deep and about 35" tall. The glass cabinets are 12" deep. He is selling them for $50 a section which seems reasonable as they are extremely heavy duty. He said the base cabinets need at least 2 big guys to move. Anyways I will let everyone know how it goes as well as some better picks when i pick them up as he has a lot of them available.

I plan to pick up 4 lowers to make 2 8' work benches and I'm not sure if I will pick up some uppers yet.. what do you think??

Thanks!

Great looking cabinets. My only concern would be the glass doors. If they are gong to be in environment where something might hit them, it could be a huge safety problem.. Other than that - go for it!

Looks freaking awesome! Go for it.

Worst case senario the glass breaks and you replace it with some type of lexan or something like that.. cheap and then you won't have to worry about it breaking... Those look wonderful to me honestly!

Nice set up. Those look like Duralab cabinets. Get as much as you can afford. They are nice cabinets. We have them in our lab in blue color and they have roller bearings for the slidder door upper cabinets. If you can also get the bench top. It looks like it is the Black resin material.

They are sweet. Our work re-fitted the Lab and THREW ALL THE CABINETS IN THE DUMP!!!

I still get sick when I think about it.

Take care with the counter tops, some are soap stone.

I wish my garage was bigger! It's 19 wide and 23' deep. They are in new haven, CT

I'm still not sure the layout I want to do. I was thinking the back wall with 2 8' sections on each side. My 220v hook up is in the middle of the back wall

I only park my lotus in there... Should I just so a loooong L bench?

I found the ad. Was just in my garage staring at the space, trying to figure out what I could do with those.

Damn, that's a really nice price for good quality stuff.

Good luck, post some pics of the build when done!

that, my friend, is something i cannot suggest! best is to think about what you do in your garage and what your needs are, and design something around that. look at the gallery--lots of great ideas.

for example, i scoured craiglist for months & months & months. finally scored several big lateral file cabinets for a song. saved thousands & thousands of $. originally thought i was going to go with open shelving, but after looking at what i had to store, and seeing many garages with both shelving and lateral file cabinets, i decided that for my needs, lateral file cabinets were the way to go.

couldn't be more pleased with my setup/layout....other than wanting it to be twice as big!

have fun, don't stress about it. :D

So what layout should i do???!! I have a blank canvas

Start off by lining the walls. If you have room put some back to back in the middle of the shop.

BTW: SWMBFAO works in a lab and approves of these. If they weren't halfway across the USA I'd be hooking up the truck and trailer tonight.

All of them. Sell what you don't need. Those cabinets are a score for the price asked if they are in that condition. The counter top is probably in the $1000 range for the size shown.
Get the power strip if you can also.
Due to your block work on your foundation it will leave a slight gap with the counter top, if you get the power strip with it you might be able to use that to cover the gap just above the backsplash.

new haven's up the road a bit from me and if i hadn't already just finished my garage, i'd be all over every single one of these in a lickety split heartbeat this weekend.

like the other poster said, buy as many as you can and sell what you ultimately don't end up using. heck, if i had the space, i'd buy & store as many as possible for my upcoming basement workshop re-do.

good luck!

Only problem with glass fronted cabinets is you need to be neat and tidy as everyone can see all your mess!

I think I'm going to get 4 base cabinets, 4 upper cabinets and the counter top.

That will give me a 16' work storage area for $500.

I would get more but that's all I have for free cash until Friday.

Those are great cabinets. I use them every day at work. They can stand up to a beating. Just be warned that the the drawers are kind of deep so they may not be great storage for hand tools.

Try to get the wire mold and the countertop as well. If it is standard laboratory countertop they will stand up to quite a bit. They are made out of a very hard resin I believe. I've dropped everything from organic solvents to concentrated HCL on them with no ill effects. They last for decades in a laboratory setting. Try to get that air and gas fittings as well. You can see them in the pictures near the sink. They are chrome valves for gas and liquid. Very handy to have plumbed right in the top of your bench.

The top cabinets will be good to very sturdy and hold a lot of stuff.

Post pics when you got them!

Forgot to mention if you have the space for it try to get a sink as well. Many times the sinks are made out of the same resin as the countertop. Really good stuff. They are they're usually pretty deep as well.

Get a roll of masking tape and tape them off. Then paint the glass the color of your choice. It will last a few years and you'll have to do it again but it will look nice.

...and I remember cabinets and uppers like this from High School Chemistry. That ain't no normal glass. It's about a 1/2" thick and pretty much bullet proof.

I remember these from High School Chemistry and they told us that the tops were "burn proof". Wouldn't you know it... ....one of the girls actually burned a notch in the top of her bench. I can't for the life of me remember how.... It seems like it had something to do with a bunsen burner, a test tube stand and some kind of sulphur compound. The bottom of the test tube MELTED out. We never let her forget that.

..... or use a window tint , maybe a Stainless Film would look good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polished-St...979?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item484ddb587b

Look at how the glass is installed. You might be able to easily replace the glass with some 1/4" black double-sided melamine or other material. Usually the glass is easily removable in lab cabinets (from experience) for cleaning reasons. Nice find!

Ok picked up 16' of the upper cabinets and 16' of the lower cabinets! They weigh about 200lbs on each piece have have adjustable legs under the lower cabinets. They are rock solid! He didn't have much for countertop left so I will have to take care of that myself. These are all ready to be bolted together as one unit too! The upper cabinets are going to be interesting to install!

I'm finishing up reconfiguring my garage for the 2nd time in 12 yrs. and have installed metal St. Charles cabinets on the wall by myself!

Here are a few steps to help you out!

1 - locate and mark stud locations on wall!

2- Figure out where to drill holes on cabinet backs, and drill holes

3- Screw 2x4 8 ft long to wall to hold cabinets

4 - lift cabinets onto 2x4 on wall and slid into place!

5 - Use Cabinet jack to hold up cabinets.
http://compare.ebay.com/like/261009120701?_lwgsi=y&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar

6 - using leg, keep preasure on front of cabinet

7 - Now screw top screws in 1st!

8- Now bottom screws..................
