guys need some major help here. I am having a hard time sizing my needs for my gas line. I have a Reznor 200,000 btu heater that is 125' away from my tank. I would like to run the minimum size of gas line for cost reasons. Home depot says 3/4"(don't trust the knowledge) and my propane supply store says I can get away with 1/2". Does anyone have any tips on trying to calculate this?

Also, don't forget if you plan to run a gas water heater in the future, that will require more volume. I'm on natural gas and ran 1 1/4" line about 150'. The guy at the supply place had a chart showing what size to run based on BTU requirements, length of run and line pressure from the gas company.
Here is the pdf file for the tankless water heater I am installing. On page 15 it has a chart for both natural gas and propane gas supply lines. The graph will show you the diameter of pipe needed to supply a certain volume of gas over a given length of run. I would definitely oversize for future appliances (gas water heater, gas furnace, gas stove, etc.).

You should check the gas flow tables in the "LP-Gas Serviceman's Manual". It is the standard used by the majority of LP gas equipment installers.

You can run a smaller gas line if the regulator is put at the other end, 125' away from the tank. Check local requirements first.
Look at Two stage piping. In the REGO book above, page 20 shows 3/8" copper will flow 142,000 BTU at 10 PSI.
