I am demo'ing my bathroom in my condo. Two of the walls, one behind the vanity / toilet and the back wall, have quadruple thick walls. Tile / Sheetrock / cellotex ?? / sheetrock. These two walls are "exterior" walls (another apartment unit is behind it). I'd prefer to remove just the tile and first layer of sheetrock. (just under 1" thick in total). One wall is 9x10 the other 4 x 10. And I will take it down in sections.

A contractor suggested using a angle grinder (diamond blade) with depth guide & vacuum attachment. Makita GA5040X1. Kind of pricey. $220

Is it possible to cut out specific depths with a less expensive angle grinder?

How about combining a couple of previous deas? Try using a chisel to remove the tile. Then use a less expensive blade on a circular saw to cut through the sheetrock. That way you shouldn't need the diamond blade to cut through the tile.

maybe something like this.. for $8 if HF is not too good for you. or DIY your own with 1/2 sq tubes... there is a youtube video on this. Otherwise try multi pass of shallow cuts ?

All over
I have a Rockwell 4 1/2" circular saw which is perfect for that sort of thing. I think I paid $85 for it, much cheaper than that Makita.

I just read the specifications: Range (ft.) 1-3/8 in. to 2-3/4 in.

Does that mean the minimum cut depth is 1 3/8 inch. I need just under 1" cut depth.

wonder if i can rig it to make it work.

I'm having a tough time seeing how anyone could get a 2-3/4" cutting depth from a 4-1/2" angle grinder. It's not going to happen. Just from the image it looks like it will cut a depth of a lot less than 1".

FWIW Here's another similar option that I stumbled upon that has dust extraction port but looks like it only fits some Bosch grinders.

( I have to check or you can go to the store and check)

**** alright checked I have the older version Item 45921...
the manual specific the clamp ring diameter of 1 9/16....
absolute opening of that clamp is about 1 7/8 min is 1 3/8...

The HF collar that the clamp ring attached to is about 1 5/8 give or take a 1/8"

so will it fit your particular makita.... dunno... I have to go to the garage to find out about the dewalt and other grinders... which I am not about to trek outside to....

as far as cutting depth it looks like it is able to cut about from 0 to about 2".... again all my grinders are at the garage to confirm this....

It's hit or miss... I don't have maklita grinders... only HF / craftman / dewalt / ridgit and few other brands, and 2 of those older version of the HF guards. I think as long as it is some standard collar guards on your current grinder it should be good.... unless you have those fancy twist on ones like the Fein or something, not too sure about makita..... either case.... you are using it for construction/destruction... I would have just get that + the $20 HF grinder instead.... construction dust are brutal to grinders.

If this is the type of collars your makita grinder takes.... looks like it might fit... you'll just have to measure the size of that collar.... it clips on to. for example ...

the collar I am refering to that collar the dust shield is attach to the grinder, not that of the spinning thing... I don't remember all the terminologies off the top of my head.

Can't believe someone hasnt mentioned a Rotozip yet. Drywall zip bit, set the depth to whatever you need, done in about 5 minutes.

BTW, is the Celotex the only break between units?

Rotozip looks like a mini circular saw.

so its tile/wallboard/celotex/wallboard/PIPES b/w units /wallboard / celotex/ wallboard.

Thanks I'll head out to HF tomorrow and pick up a guard and grinder.

Drywall bit isn't going to cut through tile, but a tile bit would work.

Rotozip looks like a mini circular saw.

so its tile/wallboard/celotex/wallboard/PIPES b/w units /wallboard / celotex/ wallboard.

A rotozip is more like a heavy duty dremel that lets you set the depth on spiral bits for cutting wallboard, tile, etc.

That said, there are attachments available for it including one that turns it into a mini circular saw.
