Can I do a rolled roof patch myself?

A small portion of the flat, rolled roof over my porch had been notched out by the previous owner since a tree was very close to it. Long story short, I had the tree cut down and have framed the fascia out and now need to add roofing and drip edge above it. I received quotes that were $6-800. Which is quite a bit more than I expected.

I have roofed small sheds and such before but have never done anything with rolled roofing. It seems like it “should” be fairly straight forward to do myself and at the end of the day I don’t care what it looks like as long as it works as it’s supposed to. Any thoughts here on doing it myself vs paying someone? Any tips/techniques you can refer me to?

Thanks

P.s. the white aluminum over the plywood is to help protect it until I can get it covered

Yes, but you are probably going to have to buy an entire roll of the material.

I did a small patio cover with self-adhered modified bitumen roof with the base sheet. It's like peel 'n stick. It was kinda cold so I had to use heat gun to get it to lay down. You have to go to a roofing supply company for that stuff. The traditional mod-bit is applied with a propane torch so not DIY friendly.

I suppose you can also use the roll stuff from thd for that small area.

Slip a chunk of flashing up under the existing rolled roofing, and over the drip edge. Goop down an exact sized patch. Make another patch much bigger than the hole. Goop the living **** out of it. It should outlive the rest of the roof.

Try not to leave a lip. If the patch is flush it will be better. You can buy fiberglass mesh for the seam. All the Henry's premix stuff seems to dry out and crack for me. IDK what's better.

I had to buy a whole roll and the cold patch tar stuff. I didn't have a roller so improvised with some black ABS plumbing pipe.

That's rolled asphalt, correct?

How much to just re-do the roof?

Otherwise I'd lift the edges around the patch, put some black roof sealant on the wood and slide your patch under the existing material. Smear some sealant on top of your patch, under the existing, and press it all down until it cures.

Not perfect but it already looks like a poor roofing job. The section you are patching is barely bigger then the inset was ...

Looking at this again you can clearly see the seam from the original "patch", I outlined in red.

Just make a bigger patch, outlined in blue. The orange store sells some roof patch in a tube, it's the expensive one. Sticks like hell and remains flexible. If I have a tube I'll take a pic.

When you talk about the "patch" are you thinking get a roll of flat roofing and cut out what i need and then put something like the Henry wet patch on the edges and seams? Assume i would reinforce with fiberglass tape?

Sort of.

Just roll out a piece of the asphalt roofing about 6" bigger then the red area.

Work it under the existing roofing if able. If not go over. Use plenty of sealant, I think the wet patch is meant for areas with standing water (i.e. roof drains). No reason for fiberglass tape.

I was incorrect.

The material I was recommending was the Henry wet patch. Worked great when uninstalled my chimney flashing after the fact.

should i put underlay under the rolled roofing that i am using as a patch? I got the peel and stick roofing from HD. My plan was to smear on sealant underneath where the patch is going, directly on the plywood sheathing, get it up under the overlap the best i can and then slide in my patch. Is that an ok plan for this small of an area or do i need primer and/or a peel and stick underlay? The patch is only going over the soffit. With it only being over vented soffit, i am not quite as concerned with it as if it were over house structure/attic, etc.
