I would be super pissed.

First I would find the FB, twitter, instagram, etc. pages of both compaines and blast the pics all over them, or send the pics and issues in a PM.

I would speak with the local HD manager and a Rustoleum rep if possible.

I would also try to find out the ceo or chief customer service rep from rustoleum and HD and start an email trail with the pics and the pics of the damaged spray paint can.

I would be surprised if they didnt bend over backwards for you.

SALIV8 I just put this on Facebook and tagged "Rustoleum" and set my post to "public". Great advice. THANK YOU! I found a customer service rep at Ho Depot and he tried but told me to call their insurance. Their insurance told me to call Rustoleum. Big run around. On Monday I will try the HD Manager as you suggested and the Rustoleum rep in this area.

My opinion - this is all a waste of time. (sorry to be blunt).

This is an unfortunate accident. It *****. Big time. I'd be incredibly pissed just like you are. But you contacted who you needed to - Home Depot and Rustoleum. If they get back to you, awesome. If they don't, it doesn't matter. Just get to cleaning your stuff, be angry about it for a bit (I would be), but in the end that's life and there isn't anything else you can really do about it. You'll waste more time trying to get something rather than just cleaning and moving on.

Now, I need to find that car forum post where a can of spray paint got popped INSIDE someone's car...

That is horrible.
For your car, you can contact your auto insurance and file a claim under comprehensive. The deductible is usually less.
You could try using rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease. I've restored plastic parts that way.
Solvents like acetone can damage plastic. I'd try denatured alcohol first. I've also had luck with ZEP orange degreaser.
Good luck to you.

Something to remember. Hucksters sell carpet cleaners at homeshows all the time on stains that were made 5 minutes before. It comes out because it hasn't set yet. Clean it before it has a chance. Mirror may be saveable, side of car definitely is.

If possible record all the numbers on the bottom of can. This shows date of production time, Shift Etc. Good Luck.

I had a can of Rustoleum Regal Red rupture on me. I held it away from my clothes as it spritzed and sprayed all over my Jackson Pollock. It took like 30 seconds for it to stop spewing.

I tried Goof Off and it just made it worse! The paint kept coming off - layer after layer - speared into one giant mess.

I called Rustoleum and Goof Off. I told them they owed me $75MM due to their faulty products. It took two weeks but the checks finally arrived. Faster than my Mobil 1 rebate check.

:rocker:

I bought a can of the copper metal rustoleum paint. As I was shaking the can the pain started coming out of the seam and the force knocked it out of my hand and rolled in my garage all over my walls, weed wacker, gas cans and my black car. I went to Home Depot to look at other cans and it seems the seam at the top of the can looks different so either that caused the issue or the can was overfilled. I have called Rustoleum numerous times. They offered to send me graffiti remover. The paint got inside the housing of my Stihl weedwacker . I also tried to clean the paint off my mirror with goof off and its now ruined. I am concerned about the safety of this product. I know many have had problems with the cans not spraying but this is the opposite. Safety is an issue here and I reported this to Rustoleum but they don't seem to care.

Mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, to remove the paint, be careful using the lacquer thinner on any plastics, mirror would not get hurt.

Mineral spirits, will not harm plastics.

Use the Rustoleum graffiti remover -- it really does remove spray paint better than other solvents. I used it to remove some old graffiti from brick after acetone, lacquer thinner, and pressure washing wouldn't touch it.

Try spraying a bit on a rag before you go crazy to make sure it won't damage any surfaces, especially the car.

Agreed. Nothing you will do will fix it. Get your home owner's insurance involved.

Re: Update on Can rustoleum weak at seam-all over garage

Rustoleum finally got back to me. They sent me a label so I could return the can to them for inspection. I Called my homeowners insurance and would have to pay 500 deductible. I went to a detail shop and they quoted me 480.00 to remove the paint that is still not he car and to replace the mirror. They have some sort of dye they could use not he mirror but said it won't last very long. They are only quoting me 70.00 to replace and install the mirror.

In the meantime I went back to Home Depot to inspect other cans. Their new design has some sort of paper covering over the outside of the can so the seams cannot be seen but the metallic paints all seem to have a problem at the top of the can. I took photos on the label on the shelf, bar code and the code not he bottom of the cans.

Three weeks later and I still don't have this resolved. I am not lolling to get rich on this just want to be made whole and don't think that what I am asking Rustoleum to do is unreasonable. I would clean this myself but I recently had eye surgery (I am grateful that the paint didn't get into my eyes) and my eyes are very sensitive. But I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and great advice. Moving on to other work......

If Rustoleum stiffs you, small claims is an option. Sometimes you'll get a check just before the court date. Serve the papers to their CEO at their Vernon Hills, IL corporate HQ. That'll get their attention.

Previously posted about can of Rustoleum paint that leaked through the seam when I was shaking the can and got all over my car and garage. I filed a claim and more than a month later this is the response I received from
Rustoleum....When I read this I shook my head in disbelief. Going to let my insurance go after them for my deductible and expenses to get all of this fixed
So how do they propose the little BB made the hole in the seam of the can from the inside out?? Tried to find photos from my original post but cannot find them at the moment

Thank you for informing us of the problem you encountered with Rust-Oleum paint.
We are sorry about the unfortunate situation that occurred when the new can of paint spilled on your car mirror and weed whacker.
Per the investigation, there are two punctures, one superficial that could have occurred at the can manufacturer and another puncture is the source of the leak. We do receive some cans that have superficial dents that are created at the can manufacturer, however, they are not enough to create any damage to the can itself and are deemed usable.
These cans are filled the same day that the coating is manufactured at our facility. The coating of the particular can you had was manufactured on December 9th, 2016 and would have been shipped to the store shortly after that.
Unfortunately, this product could not have left our manufacturing plant with a puncture or leak and been transported from our facilities to the store. If there was a puncture, the paint would have spilled in transportation before it even got to the store. Therefore the puncture which caused the leak would have occurred outside of our manufacturing plant as well as the can manufacturing plant.
If there were a defect in the can itself, we would take responsibility for this problem without any questions. However, this is not a defect in our can. Unfortunately, once our products leave the facility we have no control over what happens to them. Since this was an accident that occurred inside your automobile/ home and is beyond our control, we recommend contacting your insurance company for assistance.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused to you by this situation, and we are confident that any future use of Rust-Oleum products will result in your complete satisfaction.
If you should have any further questions regarding this claim please call us at 1-800-481- 4785, and refer to the file number noted at the bottom of this letter. As requested, we have shipped the can back to you today, 4/13/2018 via FedEx
Sincerely,
Corinna Mena
