Can someone explain how "Today's Posts" works?

I've brought this up before, but I'm still not aware of older, new posts (ie, earlier in the day or yesterday) - they do not show up as unread. I end up missing some discussions because of this.

Has anyone deciphered how this works?

I've found that if I go into the topic and back out without reading the new ones (they do show as unread the first time in) that the next time I come in they do not show as unread, is that what you mean?

I end up having to look at the date and time to see if I read it. Don't always have time to hit 10-15 new ones each time in.

Maybe a re-fresh or clear un-read button if I got pages of unread to clear. I'll be on vacation for 12 days, I'm sure they're will be hundreds of new posts when I get back. Be nice to pick and choose, then clear unread post and start over.
The way it is now, once I go out, when I come back in all will be cleared.

I think that it is a matter of the forum software. I don't think it is something that can be changed through options.

Well, let's keep pushing it back to the top so he see's it every day. I like being able to hit a "new posts" button whenever I come into a forum. "Todays Posts" just doesn't do the job as has been mentioned above. I, myself, would like to see a "New Posts" button added to the header....

Humm... I can't seem to replicate the problem... When I click on it, it shows me all of the new posts since I was here last... What exactly are you guys getting?

It works fine if it has only been awhile since you were last here and if you don't stay here long. If you haven't been around for a few days, you miss some of the posts - other boards have a "since last visit" rather than "last 24 hours" setup. Also, if you're on the board for some time, it decides that you have read everything and you lose the little triangles to go directly to the "new" posts in a thread.

Easy test:

Go in there now and note which threads are new to you (bold).

Then wait until later tonight or tomorrow and check again.

Threads you never read will be marked as read (unbold).

I think the issue is that it is "today's posts" instead of "new posts" like most other boards. It gives you posts from the last 24 hours, not the posts since the last time you visited. Not sure if it is something that can be changed easily?

It doesn't work that way. Again, it's showing read posts that have NOT been read. Run the function now and then run it again in 8 hours and you won't see the same list.

As for different lists after eight hours - yes, as new posts are made in threads those threads rise to the top. And - as above - "unread" posts become "read" a certain amount of time after you've list even if you haven't read them...

Exactly. 8 hours is an arbitrary number, BTW.

You may already kknow how to do these alterations, but in case not, here's the change that will add the "New Posts" to the quicklinks menu - it's an easy template edit.


In the AdminCP->Styles & Templates->Style Manager->Edit Templates (edit either the default template or whichever you have tied to the forum)->Navigation/Breadcrumb Templates->Navbar


To put it first in line under the Quicklinks Menu:

Find:

and Add After:

<tr><td class="vbmenu_option"><a href="search.php?$session[sessionurl]do=getnew" accesskey="2">$vbphrase[new_posts_nav]</a></td></tr>

OR to add it in the main navbar, say next to the UserCP button (this will only appear for logged in members this way - nothing there if they aren't logged):

Find in the "<!-- nav buttons bar -->" section (about 1/3 of the way down):

and Add After:

Ryan, if you're out there, please take a look at this problem again.
Good example. I logged on to the site. Went to the tool forum. There were about 8-10 unread threads. Clicked on the Irwin blades thread. Posted a response. Clicked on a link. Spent a couple of minutes on the link. Went back to the tool index, and all the threads were marked read. This is the only forum I have this problem on. Can't be too hard of a fix.(I hope)

If you look in the lower left corner of the screen you can change it to default style and the new post button will appear at the top. The new posts button is great!

I tried it once before too, and couldn't get it to work. This time it works like a charm though!

Aaaahhhh, it's still isn't working. I'm still seeing threads 3-4 hours+ old that I never read, showing up as READ. Somewhere there must be a time limit set on this stuff.

I haven't read this thread before, but that was by choice. I don't read every thread every time that I come to the board, but I can explain to everyone why they are seeing new posts marked as read, even though they didn't read them. The system uses cookies to mark the threads that are new and available for you to read. If you choose to ignore them rather than read them, it doesn't care, and the next time that you come to the site, it will no longer show those threads, unless there have been additional new postings to them. The only flaw in the system is that it is time sensitive. By that, I mean that if I am spending 15 minutes composing a response to a thread, the system will time out and "mark" the rest of the threads that were "new" when I started as "read", and I could possibly miss them that way. I rarely miss any of the new posts, because even though they are marked as read in this last instance, I just look over the list that is below "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit or since forums have been marked read.". There might be some "tweaking" that could be done to the system to extend the time periods, but overall, I don't see this as a major problem. Like driving a car, you learn to get used to the idiosyncrasies of the different systems out there. Junk....
