Sog Terminus XR on sale at Sport Chek and Atmosphere for $50. Part of the "Black Friday" sale.

I have the red G10 version myself, but this is the black-coated version with wooden scales. It's a very good EDC design - 3.2oz, deep carry pocket clip, high flat grind clip point with a swedge, 2.95" blade.

I really like a crossbar lock because you can close the knife quickly and keep your fingers out the blade path while doing it. This knife also has three deployment methods: pull back on the crossbar and wrist flick, finger flipper and thumb studs. I find the flipper tab a bit lackluster - but that's kind of inherent with a crossbar lock. It still works, it's just not super crisp and you can fail it if you do it too slow. Thumb studs and crossbar work like you'd expect though.

D2 steel is about as good as it gets for the price point - it's got pretty good edge retention, it is semi-stainless and reasonably tough. Certainly an improvement from 7cr, 8cr, 420 j2 or HC, 440 a or b, etc. that you'd typically find on sub $50 knives, but I prefer VG10, 14c28n, Nitro-V and 10cr18comov that you find on knives in the $70-$150 range.

7 pc Metric Anti-Shedding 45° Offset Box-End Wrench Set - on clearance for $38 (reg $80). 6mm-19mm, no skips.

I had to watch the video to figure out what these wrenches were for. Weird description Princess Auto - maybe why your "anti-shedding" wrenches didn't sell.

Anyway, after looking at the video these appear to be clones of the Olsa Tools Offset Bolt Extractor Wrenches. Since Olsa's are imported from Taiwan and appear to be identical, wouldn't surprise me if it was the same factory.

I remember when these launched at PA. I was like "Anti-shedding"? Are they wrenches for Labrador Retrievers?

Another tool that languished. Who even approved the description? Do they even know what shedding means?

I found them on a clearance table on my local PA - further reduced to $25. Picked up both SAE and metric. They look really good.

I don't believe these claimed specs can be real, but Costco has a flashlight on sale for $40 that comes with a proprietary li-on pack, 9 Duracell alkaline batteries and claims to be able to pump out 5000 lumens for 2hrs.

Impossible I say. Lights making 5000 lumens are usually $100-250 and often can only sustain that output for a few minutes before they throttle down to avoid overheating. 5000 lumens is like 3x halogen highbeams on a car. Compare this light to the Olight mini Marauder, for example (7000 lumens, but for 2-3 minutes, regular price $250 - black friday deal for $180).

Here it is though. The reviews are good.

PA had Rolair synthetic blend compressor oil on sale for $15/L down from $20/L in their last flyer, but they honour past sales if it's within 30 days (sometimes longer depending on the store). Is it worth it, or is there better oil/pricing elsewhere?

Could have sworn the CDN Tire stuff was cheaper but I checked and it seems to be the full synthetic is $25/L (iso 46) and non-synthetic (SAE 30 ISO 100) is $20/L, but I don't see a synthetic blend.

This seems like a lot of grinder for the money.

DEWALT 60V MAX FLEXVOLT Cordless Brushless 7 Angle Grinder - $239

0640565.jpg

I would really like to get a more powerful cordless angle grinder. Not sure I'll need a 7-inch disc most of the time though. Can large grinders like this be fitted with smaller discs and guards?

I know Dewalt's DCG418 is a 4.5" to 6" grinder and would probably make more sense, but why not go for the biggest and baddest - especially when it's cheaper?

I can’t think of any reason it wouldn’t work, mechanically speaking, but 7” grinders do run slower than 5”.
That one runs at 6500 rpm I think, and most 5” grinders spin over 10k.
The speed was going to be something I mentioned, but with a smaller disc it's unlikely that you'd lose as much speed when working with it. I'd download the manual and have a look to see if there's any explicit mention of *not* using smaller discs for some reason. You might also run into some issues depending on the cutting/grinding angle with regards to the guard.

Thanks! That's a good point about the RPM.

When I compare the 7" DCG440 vs the 4.5"-6" DCG418, the RPM is the biggest difference: 6500 vs 9000. Interestingly they both claim 2300 MWO. So it's a torque vs. speed thing.

That makes me lean towards the 4.5"-6" DCG418 since the kit price is $389 and comes with a 9ah Flexvolt pack. I could use another Flexvolt battery anyway - and I can't get a 9ah for the $150 price difference. Might as well go with the angle grinder better suited to the disc size I'll use most often.

Bust one out tonight and tell me how it is! Compare it to your headlights maybe (unless you've got another high-lumen light with a known rating). I'm super curious about how it performs.

I suspect it's a good light for a great price, but I just can't believe the lumen rating is real. The reviews are all excellent so I don't doubt it's bright - but if that light can truly summon 5000 lumens, it's the greatest flashlight deal of all time (and I'll buy several 😄).

I share the same sentiment, I'd be in for a few if that's the case :) I do truly enjoy watching the comparisons of flashlights on Torque Test Channel.

My aunt bought one of the aforementioned Costco "5000" lumen lights. I was visiting recently so, while I'm no TTC, I have some comparison photos.

Keep in mind though, it's very hard to photograph Flashlights. I was using my phone and it auto adjusts for different brightness levels. The comparison might still make it obvious though.

Highbeams:

Screenshot_20231126_191517_Gallery.jpg

Flashlight:
Screenshot_20231126_191536_Gallery.jpg

Keep in mind:
  • The flashlight is a much cooler color temperature
  • The highbeams in the example weren't great - just normal halogens, but several years old.
  • The car headlights have a hotspot in the center, with a relatively wide spill area
  • The flashlight projects a very flat and even beam, much wider than the car and without any hotspot.
Based on that, I'd estimate the flashlight at 2000 lumens on high. I'd really like to try it side by side with my Nitecore EC4S (2200 lumen max) for comparison.

If it can maintain 2000 lumens for a couple hours like it claims (albeit high is supposed to be 5000 lumens, not 2000) that's still an awesome light for the money.

Here's another picture with the vehicle in the background - should make it obvious how much wider of a beam the flashlight casts and how the headlights have a hotspot).
Screenshot_20231126_191600_Gallery.jpg

I'm not that confident in my lumen estimate FYI. It's hard because I'm not used to a light with that wide of a beam pattern - or one that casts its light so evenly without a hotspot.

This is definitely more of a flood light than a thrower. Even the "zoomed-in" setting is pretty wide. It can make stuff far away hard to see because the foreground is so bright. Good for working on things or walking at night though.

Lee Valley has their OnLine sale which just started. I picked up a $1K gift card for $850. It started at midnight EDT.
I see that Rikon 10-326 coming home with me before the end of the year. The Saskatoon LV has been closed for a few months now. They are moving into a larger mall setting with a Gand opening date of Dec.1st. Bet you know who will be in line for that one. LV has packaged the 14” with a wheel kit or a wheel kit and 4 blades or simply the always available saw only version.
I looked at Laguna but not much on sale these days. I have looked at used Laguna and Rikon but nothing came of it. Either over priced, too far to travel or some people are just flakey.

Thanks for the tip! Lee Valley is an awesome place to shop for Christmas presents - they have unique stuff and nothing is junk.

House of Knives has a Cyber Monday sale, but what stood out to me is the discount on Morakniv, You can get a Morakniv Basic 511 Carbon for $11.40. Pro C Carbon is $14.40. Sale is on a whole slew of models, so I won't try and list them. Been a long time since Morakniv was that low though!

Moraknivs are excellent value and very tough. Surprisingly good steels too, when you consider the price.

How about some cooking "tools"? OKC Agilite kitchen knives are on sale at Knife Center with some big discounts. This isn't Canada-specific per se, but if you're buying a set then even with exchange and shipping, the price quickly becomes much better than buying them here.

E.g. The 9.5" Chef knife is $17 USD (reg $52.40).

That's a lot of knife for the money! Sandvik 14c28n is tough, stainless and holds an edge very well. It's probably my favorite non-powder metallurgical steel. The handles look pretty basic, but I feel like you're lucky to get a handle when buying 9.5 inches of 14c28n at that price! 😄

You and your knives :ROFLMAO:

No experience with 14c28n but I've found hard stainless chef's knives to be a PITA to sharpen, they burr/roll like crazy
