Is this forum big enough to support a deals thread exclusive to Canadians? I think it's worth a shot!

I'm thinking it should primarily be deals available from Canadian retailers - but if some deals are only available to Canadians from other countries, so be it.

Here's my first suggestion...

The Titan Micro Swivel-head bit driver is on sale at Princess auto for $12.99. It usually sells for more than double that (it's $32-34 on Amazon, for example, depending on color). Good tool too!

Bonus deal: 25% off Channellock at Canadian Tire.

Just FYI, you can also price match with Home Depot or Lowes and they will beat the price by 10%. Canadian Tire is usually a few bucks more than Home Depot - but not when the sale is on.

I have this ratchet - and love it.

Stanley Proto J4757F 1/4-Inch Drive Flex Head Ratchet - $47.57 on Amazon at the moment (it's ~$85 from Grainger).

Nice! A deal's a deal. Bring it on!

I found this website recently: cryertool.com

Best prices I can find in Canada for Williams USA tools and the only source for Toptul I know of.

I should caution while they are legit, my ordering experience wasn't entirely without hiccups. I chalk it up to them being a relatively new ecommerce store and still sorting out the bugs.

By "bugs" I mean:
  • they initially didn't have an SSL certificate (which isn't a small problem). I was able to contact them on Facebook and they fixed it. You might ask "Why Facebook?" well that's bug #2:
  • I still haven't received responses to my emails from a couple weeks ago. I don't know if they're filtering me out in a spam filter or what. I also called them and spoke to a perfectly pleasant gentleman on the phone who was willing to talk about the tools, but couldn't help me solve my web woes.
  • bug #3 I found is even though I signed up for an account when I placed my order, the temporary password sent to my email didn't work to log in - still waiting for a solution on that one.
I wouldn't call my experience an example of supreme customer service - but I did get my tools, they arrived fast and I paid less for them than I would have anywhere else.

Here's a good deal on some smooth-jaw duck bill pliers from Lee Valley: $10.50 (free shipping on order over $30).

This isn't the sort of pliers everyone needs, but I've put mine to use - and these are cheap.

Today's deal: NOS USA Craftsman Torx Screwdrivers at Princess Auto.

$5 /each. Links:
Besides the USA on the handle, the WF on the handle gives them away as produced in the now shuttered "Western Forge").

9026550_A0CG_00_01.jpg

I bought them already. I usually use my Eklind cushion grip T-handles, but I wanted some torx screwdrivers too and found these lurking in the surplus category on Princess Auto's website. They seem nice to me. I like the comfort grips over plain acetate handles.

I'm not sure if these qualify as a screaming deal - but $25 for a 5-piece USA made set seems like good value to me (and it's not the sort of deal that will be around long term).

Morakniv Craftline Chisel Knife is currently $18.52 on Amazon. I had my camels set for a price drop.

81IwoVH-MWL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Mora has an excellent reputation for inexpensive but durable work knives. I wanted to try this as a carpentry companion knife.

This isn't an all-time low, but I set the price watch at least a year ago.

Hultafors and Titan also make chisel knives - but the Mora is a single bevel grind whereas the other two are dual bevels. I have the Titan - it's ok. It's a big large and a bit more like a knife than a chisel than I was expecting. Fingers crossed I like the Mora better.

Proto J5248s 3/8ths drive "classic" ratchet for ~$35 on Amazon.

Note: this isn't the regular "classic" 3/8 model. It's a 3/8 square drive inside Proto's 1/4" ratchet body. The reason? It creates a 3/8ths ratchet with a very small head.

612jDZ0Et7L._AC_SL1362_.jpg
I went ahead and ordered one myself. I already have a SK roundhead like this (3/8 in a 1/4 ratchet body) and it's probably my most-used ratchet. I might be weird though - I have 3/8" sockets down to 5mm, so I use my compact 3/8ths ratchet for many jobs where others might just use 1/4".

It's handy for larger stuff too though - e.g. where you want to use a small ratchet for speed and finish up with something longer for torque.

I love Proto ratchets, so I just had to see how Proto's version compares to my SK.

Effective October 1, 2021, Princess Auto will be offering free shipping with no minimum order amount.

They did this for awhile during the first covid lockdown too. I haven't read the fine print, but I assume it will work the same way where it's basically like a credit to be used against shipping costs - so you can exceed the credit if making a large order or shipping something large or heavy.

So if you order a $13 Osca hammer and shipping is $9, you'll see the shipping charge plus a $9 shipping discount in your shopping cart. I bring this up because, say you order a half-dozen pieces of 8-foot angle iron, you might see shipping costs of $47 in your cart but a shipping discount of only $30 - leaving you with some still to pay.

Don't quote me on that $30 number though - I expect there will be a maximum, but I don't recall what the max was last time.

EDIT: Just found the fine print. The maximum shipping discount is $100 - that's definitely higher than last time! The free shipping promo will be for all of October.

Just FYI, there's some NOS Gearwrench screwdrivers hiding in the surplus section of Princess Auto's website too. Can't search for them by name because PA doesn't list the brands of items in surplus (I wonder if it's part of the sale agreement so as not to compete with authorized distributors).

Here's one, just for example. They're cheap, but it's like an easter egg hunt.

Also found a USA production pair of Craftsman retaining ring pliers. $3.81

52 pc Rotary Tool Accessory Kit $3.61

Craftsman convertible T-handle screwdriver $3.61

Sorry, I'm not certain but I doubt it. It feels rare that we Canadians have deals good enough to pique American interest! 😄

It's funny, Princess Auto is the closest thing we have to Harbor Freight - yet it seems like most Canadians are WAY more enthusiastic about Princess Auto than Americans are for Harbor Freight. I've often wondered why that is.

Princess Auto is a little different (I think) from Harbor Freight - though I've never been to a Harbor Freight to compare, I just read about it online. Maybe the different perception is because PA carries some good stuff along with the junk? PA has surplus items, like a couple of the ones I posted above, that can include high quality brands. They also carry Lisle, Channellock, Bondhus, etc, as regular offerings - which I consider pro grade. Yet there's tons of "Powerfist" tools too, which is PA's house brand - some of those appear identical to HF stuff. PA's power tools tend to be a bit suspect too.

PA also makes custom hydraulic hoses. They also have what amounts to an unlimited return policy - that might weight into it. If anyone else wants to muse about this subject, feel free to weigh in! I feel like every time someone mentions HF online the response is "ew, gross", whereas when something came from PA it's like "hmm, tell me more". 😜

I’ve observed the same attitudes towards Princess Auto and Harbour Freight.

I’ve been to both stores, HF seems to be mostly junk with a few good items like their tool chests. My PA has mostly good stuff with only a little junk. Today I was there and saw real Honda engines for a great price next to the knockoff Honda engines at an even lower price. The custom hydraulic lines can’t be beat and a lot of the tools are excellent quality and value.

I think there is also a difference in the perception of Canadians vs Americans. Canadians tend to see PA as a Canadian company providing good value to Canadians while Americans see HF as a distributor of Chinese made junk sending money and jobs out of their country.

Good observation. By the way - those knockoff engines aren't terrible!

I have an ancient John Deere Gator AMT622 (5-wheel). I'm pretty good with carburetors but I just couldn't eliminate a hesitation when I first pushed the gas pedal (to the point that it often died). I tried to get some new jets or a rebuild kit from JD, but the carb is discontinued. They could sell me a whole new one for ~$350, but no individual parts. Then the starter died - that was going to be another $240. I needed a new air filter too - and that was like $80!

Well, rather than do any of that, I bought one of those 420cc knockoff engines from PA for $300. I could hardly believe it, but the damn thing practically dropped right in. I was expecting a fabrication project. The only challenges were that the exhaust was different and there was no room for the air filter housing the engine comes with. I swapped to a silicone elbow and cone filter and am currently running one of those flex tube exhausts (but I'll get a proper one made soon). The clutch, engine mounts, fuel pump, throttle cables, etc, bolted up no problem.

Not only was that way cheaper, but I upgraded the Gator from the very tired original 8hp Kawasaki, to this 15hp Honda clone. Plus now if anything goes wrong with the engine, I can replace the whole thing for $300. I love it!

BTW, here's a deal at PA for those of you constantly misplacing your 10mm sockets.

Ten 10mm sockets in ten different styles from Titan for $15.

Free battery event on at Home Depot. Applicable to most brands. That's not a horrible deal if you were considering a purchase already, but I checked the options and there's nothing that stands out as a screaming deal to me.

I mean, sure, you could buy a Dewalt DCF887 bare-tool impact driver and get the free 3.0ah battery for $199,
OR...
You could buy the DCF887 kit with a 5.0ah battery, charger and bag - which also happens to be $199.

This $35 50-pack of assorted 5" orbital sander discs is the only deal that stuck out. I really like those Diablo-brand sanding discs - they seem to do a good job and last a long time.

Haven't spotted too many deals the last couple days. I don't want this thread to die out from inactivity though - I'm still hoping it catches on!

I placed an order for this $28 metric thread restorer kit on Amazon. It's coming from China, so I'll need to wait a couple weeks for it to arrive so I can see whether it's a deal - or just tool-shaped pot metal. I often use regular taps and dies to clean up threads, but I know that removes metal and isn't considered the best approach.

71iSgPCLLPL._AC_SL1001_.jpg

The version I was thinking of buying from Lang is $120 - I just didn't want to spend that much. I figured this cheap set was worth a shot - I've no guilt about sending **** back to Amazon.

You might try looking around for the Craftsman 52105 which was made by Lang. You can sometimes find this on eBay for a good price. Here's a current auction:

There are also a few other companies that sell the same set. One example, I think, is the Kastar 972.

Good tip. 👍 I'll keep an eye out. Might as well try what I ordered since it's on the way, but I will buy something else if this doesnt work out - or to expand my options.

Noticed some cheap Wen brand wood lathe chucks on Homedepot.ca today. I have one of those old 37" tube frame lathes that was sold under a dozen different brand names 25 years ago (including Craftsman and Mastercraft).

I use mine mostly to make pens and tool handles, but I wanted a cheap chuck to widen up the options a bit.

Amazon, Busy Bee and Lee Valley have options from $120-280. $120 got you a noname generic chuck, $180 was the basic Oneway with no jaws, $280 was a pretty comprehensive kit.

Home Depot had Wen chucks from $64-$100, with jaws for $14-35. Worth a shot I figure. I don't always buy cheap tools, but this is something I just didn't want to spend a lot on.

Wen, by the way, seems to be a OEM brand name for lots of the benchtop tools sold at big box stores. There's a Ryobi and Mastercraft drill press, for example, that differs from the Wen on Amazon only in color. Same thing for the combo disc and belt sander.

So hardly top tier, but also not a random straight-to-Amazon Chinese rebrand effort.

Here's the $64 chuck - which is $99 on Amazon.

Ultra low-profile torx keys $7.80

61b7-9QjklL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Performance Tool isn't pro-grade in my opinion, but these might be handy. Anex and Neiko make this style of bit key too - but they're considerably more expensive and I'm not sure if they offer Torx versions.

There's one bad review on Amazon, judge accordingly (I expect these are not intended for heavy abuse though, so perhaps that purchaser had unrealistic expectations).

Napa Canada 3/8" drive long handle ratchet. $34.99 and free shipping until tomorrow, October 12th. 64% off regular price.
https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/UHTP38LTD90

Nice small head 90 tooth ratchet, same as Napa USA Carlyle brand.

There are other Ultrapro ratchets on sale, but discount is not all that attractive.

Good deal!

I like Ultrapro tools generally. I bought a big set of combination wrenches after being pleasantly surprised using a friend's set - but they're usually pricey. Thanks for the tip!

6-pc ball hex Zebra T-Handle set from Wurth for $29.

&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

I really like Wurth's tools. Their screwdrivers seem to be made by Felo, lots of the pliers are Knipex or Felo.

Bonus: Here is a coupon code for 15% off: welcome15 - this was a promotion they offered two years ago for first-time orders, but I just checked and it's still working! Even for me, who has ordered a few times before.

Free shipping on orders over $150 - but I don't think you can combine that with the 15% off (and shipping isn't usually that bad anyway).

Hey, have you any way of telling what Knipex makes for them? First I'm hearing of it. Wurth rep came knocking on our door a year ago trying to get us to move away from Acklands for all our consumables - gloves, ppe, tape, loctite etc. We never ended up switching but I remember her hyping up their tool selection at the time - if I knew that they were Knipex rebrands I might have paid more attention!

Just from looking at them, some are obvious. E.g. Wurth has an assortment of pliers wrenches:

7150250.jpg

They also sell the Knipex pipe wrench:

7140650.jpg

These circlip pliers are Knipex:
7140230.jpg

Oooo interesting... spotted these "new" Gray snap ring pliers on the website too:
GRYB103-internal-external-retaining-ring-plier-set-3pc-wurth.jpg

I think these are Knipex too - but I don't recognize the handles. At first I thought they were Felo, but the metal bits look more Knipex to me:
71401555.jpg

Then there are these - clearly NWS but with that same style of grip! I suppose that means the previous ones must be NWS too?

71401591.jpg

That's interesting. NWS makes some excellent pliers.

By the way, if you make an order from Wurth, you pretty much have to order their bit driver. It is up there with the Knipex pliers wrench as one of my favorite tools.

It has 72 teeth in the most compact head I've ever seen - yet I've put some full-handed torque on it without issue. Nice little comfort grip too. The whole tool is small - which is what I most often need from a bit ratchet.

The bit sits flush with the top of the head - meaning the ratchet doesn't add any height to your bits. It's dished slightly, so you can push the bit out with your finger. I love this tool. It's also available in a kit with sockets, bits and a 1/4" square adapter.

&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

I also like the screwdrivers. I assume they are custom-gripped Felo given the obvious similarities. It's either these or the Irazola-made Bahco screwdrivers that are my favorite. 🤔 Hard to decide - but these are 1/3 the cost of the Bahcos.

&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg
2C4%2C0%2C0%2C5_SCLZZZZZZZ_FMpng_BG255%2C255%2C255.png

P.s. Wurth also sells Knipex cutting pliers. E.g. the compact bolt cutters, shears, end-cutters etc. They even left the "Knipex" branding on these:

&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

Oh! one more thing. Does anyone know who makes Wurth's ratchets and sockets? I have a few, not many, but they seem pretty good too. I'm curious because I don't have any guesses.

I recognize this one as also sold by Laser:
&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

But this beauty? Beats me. Facom-ish maybe?

&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

Sockets... might have some Facom bloodlines too. That's my only guess and I'm far from certain:
&trim-colour=FFFFFF&trim-tol=15&ixlib=csharp-3.2.0.jpg

And they might not all be from the same source. Seems like most of the socket sets are different - polished chrome with a different profile:
