I've been digging around the site for the last couple hours trying to find info on Cantilever style boxes, but all the links are dead and images don't load.

I am looking to find a Snap On KRW48A but they seem to be out of production.

I see that the new Kennedy's are made in China, is it even worth asking about the quality of them?

Facom has something similar.

So... any suggestions?

Where did you see that the Kennedy's were made in China?

general-tool.com

A month ago, we were informed by the Kennedy Manufacturing that they no longer will produce their line of Cantilever Tool Boxes. Instead, the Homak Company is now producing Kennedy's former #1022 (22" ) and #1018 (18") Cantilever Boxes in China. Kennedy has told us that these new boxes are being made to the Kennedy specs. We got our shipment in, and they look pretty good, so we know we can confidently sell this new brand of Cantilever Box. Again, these Cantilever Boxes are now being made in China by the Homak Company to Kennedy's specs. The 22" Cantilever Box (#BW00210220) is 22 1/8" wide, 10" deep, and 12 5/8 wide. The Net Weight of the box is 23 Pounds. This Cantilever Box has 4 Trays AND has a metal divider for storing sockets. One Divider Set (which includes 4 side strips and 10 dividers) is included. We are pricing these boxes to sell, at a very competitive price of $89.00

That Snap-on with the flip top covered top drawers looks an awfull lot like my old-school Craftsman. I use it as my Go-Box and that thing is a beast. Built very sturdy. I see these boxes all the time at garage and estate sales. They were very popular with the older guys. Last weekend I passed on a really nice old cantilever Kennedy. I didn't think anyone would want to spend the shipping cost. Are a lot of guys looking for these??

Yes, as far as I know, all the Kennedy hand carry boxes are now made in China. I bought a large hand carry box a few years ago and later found out it was one of the last to be produced in the USA. I've heard the quality of the China made boxes is still pretty good, but I won't buy one.

My go to box is also a cantilever craftsman. It was put through the ringer by previous owner/owners and is overstuffed now so I'd like one a little sturdier.
Still though I would recommend them. I believe the larger sizes (like Ricksters) were stronger and if I see one of those i'll grab it. I like that you can see everything when you open it and that there are more compartments than a single tray type box. That way not as many tools are burying each other.

I have the Craftsman style, have had it for over twenty five years. Have repainted it a few times and still looks good and works great. I took it with me overseas when I was still in the military and still use it for trips today.

Is the Snap-on UT-22 too small?
Well, maybe the box I linked in my original post isn't out of production, all the boxes on the Snap-On site say "Currently Not Available." :headscrat

The UT-22 or similar is on my list of boxes to buy and try, I just prefer the ones with the trapezoidal (I think thats the word :wtf:) tops.

Here is a picture of the toptul box, just an idea if you are looking at an import.

That Facom BT.11A cantilever box is also made in China by Excel. It's a pretty good peice. It's also sold under the brand "Apollo".

I just missed two nice Kennedy cantilever boxes at an estate sale, te guy got them for $12.00. I was late getting to the sale because my girlfriend was taking her sweet *** time getting ready. Needless to say I wasn't to happy with her, but I did find some other nice deals.

Do a search on Amazon, not to long ago a seller was selling a used one at a so-so price.

I think I know what you're talking about and no she did not purchase me two suitable replacement toolboxes.
:bounce::bounce:

Yeah, I've been digging around looking for some vintage Kennedy's or Craftsmans. There aren't any good deals on them from what I've seen.

edit:

looks like the Snap-On is either built by Beach or they use the same manufacturer:
http://www.tool-chest.ca/prodi.asp?id=3006&t=ts

I had one of these boxes a few years back, but a Husky version. Thing lasted two times in and out of my truck before ripping the clasp rivets out of the base metal. It was then relegated to spare tool storage in our shop.

Mike from toptul is Washington, maybe you shipping would be cheaper,:lol_hitti
Yeah, I understand you really like Toptul but it sure doesn't get me horned up. Just looking at the picture makes me feel like I would be keeping my tools in a fly box, and that just doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

edit: wtf. So as long as I'm logged into the Snap-On site it says that nothing is available. Once I log out, everything is listed as available.

Anyone have any guesses as to why this is happening?

I would rather have snapon than toptul, but can't always afford it, so I get snap on ratchets and toptul extensions and craftsman sockets... Works well for me.

i have a Kennedy I might be willing to sell for 60 bucks shipped. Need paint, it has some rust & the brown wrinkle finish is coming off in a spot or 2. I think the PO used it as a tackle box & had it in a boat.

Has anyone ever cut the dividers out of theirs? I have an old Kennedy that I keep considering doing that to, or finding some other model. (wondering if the dividers are needed reinforcement)

I cut the deviders out of mine, they are not needed for reinforcement atleast not in mine. I can take a picture if you want.

I've been looking at flat top cantilever boxes for a while now, Kennedy style is too big for me.

Seems like the best bang for the buck is this Excel box, but I don't like the fact that the two lids don't meet. One reviewer on the site I linked points out that the box leaks water inside when it rains:

TB122B_1.jpg

I'm familiar with the Snap-on UT22, the Hazet 190L, and the Toptul offering. I just noticed that Beta makes one as well

l_CAJA%20C20%20C20L.jpg

The Beta C20L is available for $80 over at the Beta USA site, which seems like a pretty good deal. Dimensions of this box are comparable to the Snap-on and Hazet offerings, and I would imagine quality to be comparable as well. Anyone dealt with these guys or used this box?

The Snap on UT22 (similar to the above Beta) is a nice box. I have one and it is extremely well made. It's made in Canada. Probably a bit overpriced like most Snap-on at $122 but it's a decent deal for a heavy duty box.
The rest of the Snap-on line looks to be made in China but with a Snap-on price.

Stack-on used to have a large cantilever toolbox. We used to have them on the flightline all the time when I was in the Air Force, the only problem is if you didn't re-inforce the corners with some dexion they would split open after several drops.

No doubt the Snap on is great but it's just so pricey that I almost feel guilty spending that much. On the other hand, maybe in the big picture it's not such a big deal.

Can't figure out that Beta site, there's no button to order anything. Maybe I'll give them a call on Monday.

The Kennedy model 1022 cantilever is not made in China in fact the case is manufactured and assembled by my company Kennedymfg.com * I'm an employee*. The riveted in tray assembly is in fact made in China temporarily but the case is made right here in Van Wert Ohio in the last remaining Kennedy tool box plants.

With that being said China used to produce the 1022 cantilever tool box but we pulled it from China nearly 2 years do to inferior quality. We've actually brought most of our outsourced stuff back home to the USA. The Chinese don't understand quality and the Kennedy brand is all about quality and durability. I think most everything they produce is junk. Those are old pictures of the 1022. All the new ones come in a brown wrinkle finish.

I can honestly state that although most tool box companies have resulted in cost cutting measures just like about every American business that our boxes are of the best money can buy. If its a proffessonal quality tool box from Kennedy an American built it.

Take Care!

Elroy posted these cantilever boxes a while back. The wrinkle brown one on the left AND the red box are both Kennedy. Elroy purchased the red box directly from the Kennedy company store in Van Wert, Ohio about 10 years ago. The brown one came from Grainger about 20 years ago. The black box on the right is a Remline purchased from Walmart at least 25 years ago.

Not bad, Elroy has a few boxes that have been around the block a few times as well:

Some interior shots of the Remline

Elroy's pleasure.

Now there is some *********** for ya.

Elroy has found these boxes to be very functional over the years. Kennedy still offers them. The brown "Holley" box is a Kennedy. It's the smaller one they offer. That box is about 20 years old. Elroy paid like $50 for it then. They are over a $100 now.

The "Black" box shown here is a Remline. Picked it up at Walmart maybe 25 years ago. If Elroy recalls correctly, it was only $20 or so. Should have pick up two.
