Hey guys, just cleaned out my portable toolbox, thought you might be interested.

This is the box I toss into the truck when I am working away from my shop. I might be in the plant fixing something, welding at another shop, working on my mom's car, whatever. It is mostly comprised of spares from my main box but there's a fairly complete set of basic tools in there. Dang that looks awfully close to a FACOM box I restored last year. I love mine - and yes, heavy when full.

I have a Kennedy 1022. I added grab handles at each end bolted through the main frame. That way I can carry it with two hands. It's not even full and it weighs over 80 lbs. Also, the hip roof design of the Kennedy lets you stand sockets up in the top tray.

The Kennedy is 10 inches wide instead of 8-3/4 or so that most other cantilever boxes are. Made in USA. About $130.

They've cheaped out on the manufacturing process on both that SO & the Facom box. That lip around the edge of the trays used to by folded all the way over. Even cheap import boxes were that way. Now they have that stupid lip that does nothing except cut you.
I have a small cantilever like those, I folded the lips over with a door skinner.

I've always liked cantilever tool boxes and the way they sort of "lay out" your tools rather than just pile them in a box like a typical hand-carry toolbox. Last fall I wanted to put together a "grab 'n go" set of tools so purchased a 20 in., five drawer, Excel TB122B-Red box for a little under $40 from Amazon. I'm pretty sure it's from China. Box measures 19.5" L x 7.9" D x 11.4" H, has an excellent powder coat finish, and I've been very pleased to date.

My only complaint is the way the tray top edges are reinforced. The top 1/4 in. of the tray lips are bent over at 90 deg. rather than a full 180 deg. return bend. This causes the lips to partially obstruct access to the tray. I'm sure the 90 deg. bend makes for a stiffer tray, but, functionality of the box would be greatly improved if the lips were bent over a full 180 deg.
