I know this has been discussed but I just wanted to say I bought this new "full swing" carhartt jacket and it's the most comfortable heavy work jacket ever. I have always wore dickies jackets because I hated the "stiff" and puffy look of traditional carhartt jackets. Especially since I'm a thinner guy.
Got this at bass pro for $129
What are you guys wearing?

So it feels more like a sweat shirt than a jacket? I know what you mean about the stiffness, they kind of **** when you are really moving around.

I hate Carhartt jackets when they're new, but once broken in they are by far my favorite. They lose the puffiness and stiffness after you use them for a bit.

My favorite Carhartt is the traditional style, without the quilted lining. It has a felt lining, and is much thinner and still very warm. Easy to move around and work in it.

But my beater jacket for around the farm is still an old quilted one, maybe 10 years old.

For the past 2 Christmas' I've bought my crew Carhartts. The first year it was the duck jacket with the arctic quilt lining....I hated that thing until I washed it about a dozen times. It would literally stand up by itself. Now it's my favorite.
The next year I bought them the flannel lined shirt jac - that thing was awesome and soft right out of the box and now the biggest complaint is my gf is always taking it home with her

Imho, Carhartt makes some nice but way overpriced stuff. I bought a Carhartt that started to fall apart after only one year. I bought my current Berne jacket for a third the price of a Carhartt and absolutely love it. This is it's third winter and it's still going strong. Also wear some of their insulated bibs that I love. I think some of their new stuff is declining in quality though. Their old pair of bibs is awesome and in great shape still and my pair that is two years newer isn't holding up as well. I still prefer Berne. Probably all I'll ever buy. I do wear Carhartt long sleeve shirts underneath though and love them.

If you guy & gals like Carhartts, great.

However, I'm not a fan of their products anymore. Over the years I've had some of their coats, button down shirts, jeans and used their coveralls (supplied by work). To me they're overpriced for the quality, which seems no better than lesser brands. End of last winter I got rid of my Carhartt coat & jacket after only 10 years. They were not abused. One had a broken zipper and the other developed holes in the sleeves, next to the cuff. Then I bought a full length Berne coat for 40$ and a Berne hoodie winter jacket for 20$, both from Rural King. Time will tell how long they will last. But I bet that even if they only last 5 years, I'll be money ahead.
Also, I have a couple of Walls coveralls that I bought years ago, during the OJ trial. They're still in great shape.

I've just been wearing the Dickies Eisenhower lined jackets, ( i think i paid $30 for my last one) in their extra long length for a few years now, but im liking the looks of that Duluth one, especially with the armpit gussets for mobility. My job doesn't require me to work outside so i don't really need anything crazy, but i am outside quite a bit in the winter and snow. My biggest hangups with a lot of the jackets i find are they are usually too short and ride up when moving your arms around, or they are too big and bulky. probably why i like the Eisenhower ones, nice and simple, tough enough that i wont rip it too easily, in a style i like, and warm enough for me.
the last carhartt jacket i bought, was standard length and also on a big sale, i neglected to try it on in the store and although it fit great through the chest and arms, it was significantly too short and i just gave it to a buddy of mine who's shorter.

I like carhartt because they offer 2xl tall in most styles. Duluth has a nice product, but are sized small, so they just don't fit me right, they also have hardly any sizes in tall. I like the 1/4 zip carhartt sweatshirts, but I cut the hoods off as they bother my neck when driving.

hoods don't really bother me, I just hate pullover sweatshirts, and 80% of the time, I end up wearing a sweatshirt for cold weather activities, if I can get away with it. I pulled out a thermal lined dickies sweatshirt the other day and it was pretty beat up, so I guess I should probably check out my other cold weather stuff to see what needs to be replaced before its 10* out and I need to clear snow.

more appropriately, almost all of my clothes, are beat to **** and should be retired! :dunno:

I'm certainly a fan of their outer wear. My jacket is 12 years old, and holding up great. Its been burnt, cut, scraped and soiled and has not failed. Zipper works great, all buttons are attached, and the stitching is holding its own. I've also got a pair of their bib overalls that are about 6 years old, with the same results. I find them to be quite warm, and sufficient at keeping the wind out.

I've had two of their jackets, a pair of overalls, and a pair of paints. They've held up great throughout the years. I don't work in any of the trades but am hard on my clothes. The thinner jacket kind of ***** though.

I have a carhartt that is at least 10 years old and is the best jacket I have ever owned. It is waterproof, windproof and is awesome. Removable hood, great front left chest zippered pocket for my wallet, inside pocket for phone, great zippered hand pockets. Not thick or bulky in anyway. I truly love it!

I just looked it up and as in anything I truly love it disappears from the face of the earth never to be seen again. DISCONTINUED!!!! Carharrt J175BLK in XL Tall. Great jacket.

I have the Carhartt Extremes jacket, and it's been great. Incredibly stiff when I first got it, but it's softened up with use.

My favorite shirts ever are their long sleeve pocket tshirts. They are great.

The key to getting comfortable jackets or bibs from Carhartt is to get the sandstone material. It's much more flexible when new. Not stiff at all. Any model with the armpit gussets are alot more comfortable to move around in too.

Carhartt use to be one of my father's clients years ago. They would send him home with the newest catalog and tell him to pick out whatever he wanted.. I was too young to benefit from that, but I got anything I wanted from First Down when I was a teenager. When the father owned the Carhartt,, the motto use to be "made in America by union workers" or something like that. Now the son or sons own the company. My dad said their father is probably rolling in his grave now that most stuff is made overseas.

Carhartt gained alot of traction in the 90's I think cause the brand was kind of adopted by hip hop.. these days it's a skateboarding crowd from what I've read. So we at least have that to thank for an extensive line of regular style clothing..

Worst thing Sears did was stop selling Carhartt in the stores. What they SHOULD have done, was struck a deal with Carhartt to be an outlet location and sell the entire line inside the stores.. stupid move on the part of Sears.

Carhartt used to be the best, but when you see them showing up with Carhartt brand stores on main street and in outlet malls, featuring fashion gear, it's over. Their quality is no where near what it was back in the work clothes day. I found out the hard way when I was in a North Forty farm store, saw some Carhartt jeans on sale, so without trying them on, bought two pair just based on what I thought I knew about their quality. First of all, my bad, as I discovered they were cut 'fashionably snug' rather than loose like work jeans should be. No way one could do work in them which involves squatting; I'm not a porky puppy, but within a few washings, the seat split at the same place in both, just above the back pocket rivet.

Bottom line - the shredders/slashers/fanboys/fashionista can have the new Carhartt brand. I've moved on.

I am a fan of the OldSchool USA-made Carhartt jackets and I have quite a few. if I wear a jacket while in the wild and treasure hunting it will most likely be an old Dickies because of the fluid movement it allows me when picking. nevertheless, the older Carhartt is my favorite jacket.

Im a big Carhartt fan. I love their pocket t shirts and have somewhere between 25-30 of them. Have several of their button down shirts, several of their lined flannel shirts, and 10 or so pairs of their pants. Also have two pairs of their insulated bibs. The oldest is close to 10 years old and still holding up well despite being stained and generally nasty looking.

I only have one of their jackets. Its the Sherpa lined Sandstone Ridge jacket. I like it enough I had my company logo embroidered on the back. But I've got two big complaints with Carhartt jackets in general.

Most of them are way too short and like to ride up when working overhead or bending over. This drives me crazy!

Second most of them have hoods. And I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I absolutely hate hoods. They catch sawdust. Rub your neck when you are sitting. And are generally in the way. I'd much rather wear a beanie hat or insulated cap than deal with a hood. And what makes it even worse is Carhartt oversizes most of their hoods so they will fit over a hard hat.

Hence why I only have one Carhartt jacket and why I chose the Sandstone Ridge coat. Its a full length coat without a hood.

the only carhart i have was a gift from a friend of mine.

a long, insulated, winter FRC coat

it's actually too bulky for anything except clearing snow.

i have a couple pairs of walls insulated bibs that i wear. at work i wear lightly insulated jackets from cintas.

I've worn the pocket Tees for years. They don't shrink or fall apart.

I have had the coats, and this time I got one in nylon with the arctic lining because the cuffs on the duck coats would wear through and get ragged. So far, it's been great.

been wearing carharrts for years. it was, like part of an unofficial uniform.
they used to make the best fitting denim snap button shirts, needed to know neck size and arm length.
i put in an order a couple years ago, only traditional sizes available - sm, med, lg, etc.
imagine my dismay, when the package was opened. the shirts were a really cheap denim material, made in pakistan. last items i bought from carharrt. they can pound sand. used to be an American product, which i didnt care about the cost. slip me a cheap import, and not reduce the price................. f. you, i aint supporting them.

Carhart winter coat, was their “contractors coat” or some such when I bought it about 20 years ago. Long, comes down to mid thigh, with an inner pull string to snug it up at about hip level. Dual zipper, so you can unzip the bottom when you get in a car, still keeps you warm, but doesn’t then ride up or bunch up. Has normal sleeve ends, no elastic cuffs. Good sized hand pockets, covered by big cargo pockets with flaps. Inner breast pocket, plus two zippered breast pockets on the front.

So far, the original black plastic snaps started to break. I replaced them with chromed brass snaps from the local Jo Ann Fabric. And one of the zipper pulls wore out. That was replaced by a local seamstress, $5 and 5 minutes out the door. The fabric, stitching, and lining are all in very good shape, no problems there at all.

I’m in Northern Illinois. This is good down to about 5F for clearing the snow off my truck and driving to work, back when I used to do that (work from home now, no commute). It’s reasonably wind proof. Colder than 5F, there’s enough room to supplement with a hoodie or something like that under it.

For snow blowing, garage work (unheated), and outdoor winter work, I have a pair of house brand insulated coveralls from Farm & Fleet. With a neoprene face mask, ski goggles, and the hood up, -20F, wind, and blowing snow are no problem.

Yea I gotta agree with this.. not knowing a brand makes different type of clothing isn't exactly their fault, especially when the "cuts" are right on the labels..

Personally I'm not a fan of thick jeans. I find them heavy, stiff, and annoying. I am disappointed that carhartt did away with their loose cut jeans. I have 2 pair I bought for work a few years ago and they are just starting to let go at the rear pockets.. their most popular zippered insulated hoodie, model J149 I think it is, has become a little thinner over the model years. Don't know if it's just thinner or they changed to a better insulation.. my only real gripe is the inconsistency of the black coloring. You can walk up to a rack filled with new J149 hoodies and find deep dark black, light faded black, and every shade in between.. and that's not done on purpose.

Their sandstone material is just great though. I'll never own another jacket or bibs from them that isn't sandstone.

I have one of their water resistant or waterproof jackets also. Material never looked the same after the first wash and dryer cycle.

In the last 2 years I've lost 150 LBs. I totally lucked out. I had a nice 3XL Carhartt when I was big, I wore it last year when I went to cut a Christmas trees with my friend. It was like a tent on me. My friend is 3XL, when we got home that evening he went into his closet and pulled out a XL Carhartt he had when he was in high school. I traded him on the spot! Worked out great for both of us.

The cabelas roughneck shirt jac is my absolute favorite coat. its not the heaviest thing ever but works well layered. You can catch them on a pretty good sale some times also. the pencil pocket is awesome. I am a maintenance worker in a factory and carry a radio all the time. the jacket has a loop on the left chest side that is made to hang safety glasses on but is also perfect for clipping you radio mic onto. it has snaps instead of buttons like some other shirt jacs and it has a lifetime guarantee.

Throw the Carhartt stuff through the washer a couple times and the stiffness goes away.
I usually look for the black/dark colors because the tan gets perma-filthy easily.
I'm happy if I get more than two years out of a coat, as the jackets get rips and worn holes from work. Better the coat catches a sharp spot than me.
