First off, RTM, I love your Wiemariener. I'm a German shorthair guy since age 12.
That wood cover was, believe it or not, inspired by GJ. I kept seeing all these great valve covers on the SBCs and thought that I could do better than that plastic two piece cover that Veritas sends with the twin screw.
So I started with a 3 inch thick, 8 inch by 30 inch chunk of walnut (rough estimates from memory without measuring). I drilled spaced holes for the bolts along the perimeter, then drilled two big old holes for the vise screws and cut them out on the down side on the band saw. Can't remember exact sequence but then routed out the underside to accommodate the gears/sprockets and chain that connects the screws. That was scary on the router table as the climb cut wanted to (and did) pull that chunk out of my hands and fling it across the shop.
Then the whole chunk was routed with a roundover bit (big radius). T nuts from the back of the movable jaw hold 1/4 inch SS cap screws.
Then to the lathe for vise handles of cocobolo.
Like I said, very fun project.
