First off, RTM, I love your Wiemariener. I'm a German shorthair guy since age 12.

That wood cover was, believe it or not, inspired by GJ. I kept seeing all these great valve covers on the SBCs and thought that I could do better than that plastic two piece cover that Veritas sends with the twin screw.

So I started with a 3 inch thick, 8 inch by 30 inch chunk of walnut (rough estimates from memory without measuring). I drilled spaced holes for the bolts along the perimeter, then drilled two big old holes for the vise screws and cut them out on the down side on the band saw. Can't remember exact sequence but then routed out the underside to accommodate the gears/sprockets and chain that connects the screws. That was scary on the router table as the climb cut wanted to (and did) pull that chunk out of my hands and fling it across the shop.

Then the whole chunk was routed with a roundover bit (big radius). T nuts from the back of the movable jaw hold 1/4 inch SS cap screws.

Then to the lathe for vise handles of cocobolo.

Like I said, very fun project.

Another great thing about building your own bench is the opportunity to do all sorts of little additions, like a deadman to hold long planks against the face when planing, or a pop up planing stop. Hope these show in the pics. Enlarge the second picture and you'll see a square wood dog that pops up when holding a board without clamps for planing.

Guess I should apologize to Panda for the thread hijack. Sorry dude, they got me started.

Special kind of crazy, aren’t they? . I have an 11yo F and the 8yo M, my avatar. About 170# between them. Fostered two others, and had a big male prior. So much personality is why I love them.

I can never remember the Weim heritage, but I recall it’s GSP and Vizla. We’ve had a few GSPs in the hood, and they never got along. The vizslas are almost as crazy as the Weims.

Love that cover. I have the standard Veritas bench, added a cabinet under, and a free standing deadman. We should start a separate thread to not clog up Panda and his pup’s thread.

I posted a long time ago on the "Show your workbench" thread but maybe we do need a separate thread for cabinet makers/woodworking benches. Go for it sir, it was your idea.

Yeah I have a 2 year old silver and a 13 year old blue. I had a 14 year old that passed away two years ago. They are exceptional dogs. I wish I could trust the young one more in the shop. 8785aac40fd93c9431079072cee7ae65.jpg

My brother has a gsp and a weim. They tend to balance each other out. My weim is also a rescue got him in Missouri when he was a puppy from Wonder Weim rescue.
