Carport addition

Has anyone had a carport added to their garage? My wife wants one before the snow falls as she's not allowed to put any vehicles in my garage. I've enlarged the original 2 1/2 car by adding to the front, adding insulation and heating and built it into my woodshop.
She has no problems on how I use the building but, understandably, she wants something to keep her car covered from the Michigan winter. The city has already said I've maxxed out the size of the building and so a carport seems the only option.
I don't like the idea of the carport being attached to the side of the house since all the snow will end up sliding down to my neighbor's house. I prefer the idea of extending the front of the garage, matching the gable end, both roof angle and shingles.
I was just wondering if anyone had done this before and, if so, what to look out for.

Thanks.
Alex

:lol_hitti Just kidding. I think it has been done quite a bit around here. Although, I'm not sure how often it has been done off the front of the building. Any pics of the outside layout of the garage?

Alex,

My old garage roof had an extension from the roof off of one side, at a lot small slope over a patio - that could have been used as a carport with some minor changes to the fencing. I think you could extend the roof out the front as well - may look a little different. It'd double as a nice patio in the summer months.

By the way, I'm in Garden City.

Good luck.

Here's a picture of the garage near the end of having the extension done. I want to extend the carport forward.

Hey 70Chevy. I almost bought a house in Garden City a couple of years ago.

What about those thousand dollar metal carports that are freestanding ? I see them all over this part of NY.

Yes, this is closer to what I want to do - extend the roof out and support it. I talked to a small company last week and will look at their plans tomorrow. If it looks good then it's up to the city to allow it. My house is on two full lots but I still can't add anything more than a house on a single lot. I'll bet I'll have to file for a variance to get this done. That'll slow things down My wife hopes to get it done before we have some major snowfalls. We'll see.

Thanks guys.
