Well, I'm finally doing a post on my shop. Warning !! its a mess, just in case you all havent seem one like this before. Some pretty nice shops on here.

The building is a 28' X 36' +/-. It only has a 8' to bottom of truss, which I hate, but it still mack a nice placve to work.

As I mentioned, It was built as a a horse barn, pole construction with 2X4 purlins, 1/2" T-111 sheathing. We built a a taller, concrete/steel beam with wood truss horse barn that suited my wifes activities better than this building did.nd I got a good building to start out with.

Just wanted to do a quick intro to my shop and post a few pics. I'm taking a few vac. days and want to get it where it is better shape. I bought a round of boxes and nowhere to put them. Thats changing today.

The blue cabinet looks like a Lista, but I could be mistaken on that.

28' x 36' is the same size I have. It sounds like a good size until you start putting stuff in it, and like any garage, it fills up fast. I try to keep everything I have behind cabinet doors and off the floor, trying to maintain a clean look, but it gets awfully hard at times to do that. I'm in the process of redoing mine trying to clean it up, and even though I don't have near as much as you, I still find it overwhelming at times.

Post up a pic of the outside of your garage so we can get a feel of what it's like. And don't be embarrassed to post up a cluttered garage. GJ has all types of garages from not being able to walk in when the door is opened all the way to you need a GPS system to find your way because they are so huge.

Chuck, the Miller is a 330 A B/P Stick-Tig with Hi Freq. Nice old bullet proof machine, no electronics to not work due to sitting more than welding.

700807- I went and looked, its a Lyons, basically as good as the others. Needs some TLC and a good lube.

Power Wagon- Yes, this is normal, but at the point to where you really couldnt function, still better than the two car garage it came out off. Had to open both doors and a window to get around.

The barn had T-111 siding to the ground. went all the way around and raised the lowest purlin to where it was 6" above the concrete. I cut the siding to match. Formed for a concrete curb from the bottom of the purlin/sheathing down about 12" , deeper some areas, drilled in the wood poles and ran rebar through. This was to help anchor the pole structure and to provide support for the sheathing.

We poured what was left of the stalls, The center and tack room areas had concrete floors..Painted the interior with two coats of Home Depot missed mixed color. The outside was metal lathed and two coats of stucco. Now I had a water tight building. ( except for the crack in the floor during rainey season)

Ran a 100 amp service off the house, plenty of power. The roll doors are 8' wide, which is just about useless for vehicles. ( I really had a truck in there)
Reshingled the roof and added a ridge vent, makes all the difference in the summers here.

Its coming along, need to make tomorrow a big day and I may be in decent shape. Once I get the big layout done, it'll be organizing the boxes and drawers, finish hanging hose and cord reels, running some electric, and ....., and ..... . You get the picture.
Thanks for your replys. My family gets the shop thing, but some of the people I work with can't understand me spending vacation days doing this, while I wished I had more days .

Just a quick update. I made it down one whole side with the bigger items, still have lots of floatsam to deal with, but getting better. I took a pickup bed full to the local consignment auction, will take some more tomorrow.

There is just too much stuff for this size shop. I'm keeping all that I have, the 4' X 8' X 3/4" welding table and other big items that is killing space as we will be moving to central KY a few years down the road. Get this, I have a metal building , 40' X 50' with 12' high walls just sitting there that I get to go to a few times per year. I've done drawing overlays of my current shop on the KY building and start drooling with the extra space. Its my someday shop.

Hey all. A little update to my first of the year plans for my shop. Since I'm going to be stuck here at least a few more years, I'm going ahead and adding a covered concrete area to the front of the shop. Shop is 28' wide, I'm adding 12' out from the front. I'll then add a steel frame with Galvalume PBR panels to cover it. It'll give me 12' of concrete to work on my getting older trucks and cover to boot. Part it will be our BBQ area, so I can cook in any kind of weather.

I'll be fabricating the steel frame out of 4" sch. 40 pipe with 2" X 4" X 1/4" wall tubing. It'll be set on at least 4" pipe post. May go 6" just because. I'll use 4" aluminum channel at about 3' to 4' centers for the sheet metal. It'll tie into the existing shop building, a pole type construction.

I'm placing the frame so it will take more of the weight, and more important, wind upload,than the building. I'll run some smaller square tube ties at the connection to the building. Wind upload is important here in Fl.

I'll have to get some grading done first, right now the ground in front is higher than the shop floor. This was from when we built the horse barn, just never cut it back down. When this shop was built, they never added any fill, and I don't have any slope to work with, so the roof will help with the water than I now get in the rainy season. To complicate things, the concrete floor is 1-1/4" off from side to side in the 8' roll up door opening. So I'll have to go with the higher part and feather into the lower, which is actually a slope into the shop, but, I have no slope to go with the lower part of existing concrete. I'll will work in a sump and pump in new concrete to catch this run in.

I've attached a few pics and a drawing of the frame. I have a site plan, but could not convert from PDF to a JPEG to load. I'll try later.

Here is a drawing of the frame I'll be building. It was calculated to be able to lift from the center a 1,000 lbs.

Finally started on my concrete apron and roof extension to the front of my shop.
I'm pouring a 12' x 28' slab in front to provide some space to work on the trucks and will construct a steel frame with galvalume roof panels. The steel frame will be sissor style to provide some height in front.
I had to do some regrading as the ground sloped back to the shop some. The existing floor in the shop door opening slopes 1-1/4" from one side to the other so I'll have get creative on my concrete placement .
This was built as a horse barn, guess the horses don't care if they stand sideways.
I'll be setting two 6"x 6" x 1/4" square tubing post in the slab with footingsthe , all one pour.
I hope to pour in the coming week, might be two weeks depending on work.

Poured slab yesterday. Set the columns in 30" x 30" footers, rebar mat on bottom, all one pour. I welded base plates 12" up from bottom of 6" square tube, sch. 40. I set scraps of steel plate in the bottom of footer, set 6" on he plate, they stood on their own so we could brace off.

Getting back to work on the roof extension. I'm building a beam using 2" X 4" 1/4" wall rectangle tube and 4" schedule 40 pipe welded together. I'll weld clips on the tubing so 4" aluminum channel can be bolted for purlins.

Cut the tubing and welded together, cut out a1" plate for a gusset that will also be a connection for a small chain fall.

The bandsaw in the photo is one of the items I would run in to get if my building was on fire. It's a great little saw and it cuts this tube with ease.

Don't laugh too much at my torching skills, not to bad for not doing it on a regular basis.

Quick update, frame is upright! Almost welded out, hope to sandblast and primer this weekend. Then it'll be time to fly the 850 lbs in place.

Finished the roof frame today. It's welded out, sandblasted and epoxy primed. Just waiting and a boom lift hopefully later this week to fly it in place on the post. I'll bolt 4" aluminum channel to the brackets on top of the frame.

It's up! Lifted the beam in place today, dropped right in, I'm pleased with that.
Now to weld the connections, cap the top of the post around the tubing and trim the ends of tubing to length.

CB: i saw your thread a while back and i was probably on my cell phone which is very hard for me to type any posts. also I never used to come over to this side of the Forum (I call it the dark side because you need too many Benjamins to buy everything you see and want). that said you have an awesome amount of quality cabinets and probably full of some great old tools.

gotta give you a big cheer for being able to put up that heavy steel frame and all the welding it took to keep it there. that is one pole structure that might take 100 years to rot out and probably longer.

happy to hear you are still around and i'll keep looking in on your build from time to time. since i was a Realtor i have seen a few good (and bad) things i could pass on if you have any questions so ask away. feel free to PM me if you might need something you think i might know.

Thanks for the kind comments Drives.
Like a lot of others, been working on my collection for a while. While I have some coin invested, it's not as much as most would think, as I'm a cheap *******. I've been pretty lucky on a lot of the cabinets, not paying much over $ 120. I did blow part of a bonus on the vidmar a few years back.
I'll be glad when the roof is done, it'll be roof to work under, a nice thing here with the sun and summer monsoons.

I'll have more projects soon, got to find a mount for all the blocks.

Updated to the current project on my shop. I stripped the shingle roof off and will be replacing with galvalume. I received the metal roofing today. I ordered last Thursday and it showed up today. Complete package, screws and all. I'm impressed with this company and the price was good too. Gulfcoastsupply.com

Nice weather for sure, I just want to get done before pre summer gets here.
The shop is 28'x38' plus the 12' roof only addition Im building. Each side of the roof has 16'1" panals. The whole metal package was $ 2,7400.00. That includes all the meatl, trim, gutters, screws, 1x4 yellow pine strips that get attached to the roof deck, and 3" screws for the wood. I'm real happy with Gulf Coast Supply. The metal will be installed on top of the 1x4's, which will be on top of the existing plywood sheathing and underlayment. No insulation, I'm hoping the air gap will keep it a little cooler this summer.

Yes, I'm lucky this time of year with the weather, compared to what a lot of you are having to deal with right now.

I'll need to raise that custom truss, due to it was built and set to tie into the building without getting into the old roof. I set it in November, mid January I discovered that the shingles need to be remove. So now it will be one continous roof line. Usally the way it goes.

Always want a bigger shop. I have a bigger shop in KY. We had intended to be living up,there by now, but things changed on us. So I have a 40' x 50' x 12' eaves pre engineered steel building just sitting empty up there right now. Kinda depressing sometimes working on this one here thinking about the nice new one up there. Some day..........

Trust me, Im not happy about it, just the way life went. We've bought the property on '07, poured the slab and ran the electric and water lines on '08. The building shell was completed in 2010, started the build out the bathroom and small office/ bedroom same year, been working on it each year. I'll dig up some build pics and post.
Have great neighbors that watch over it. One time I had one go check on the building, he forgot the combo to the lock on the gate, climbed over it. The other neighbor seen him, didn't relize who it was and called her neighbor ( his wife) said there was someone going over Craig's fence. The second neighbor couldn't find her husband ( busy climbing my fence) grabs her guns to check it out. She caught her husband.

All underground electric. I have conduit stubs out of the pad transformer for the house. The property has county water, the 4" pvc are sleeves for the underground valves.

Single 12'x 12' roll up.

Toilet was the first thing hooked up once shell was done, with a garden hose! No walls were even up.

The electric was done right behind the toilet. The box next to the fridge was on the outside panel while building was being built.

The last two years we stayed in the building, in April while it was still cool.

Yes to the Listas, funny you mention that as I have come across some in the region, just no way to get them there. I'd do it in a heartbeat. It is centrally located, that's for sure. Can you imagine how many block grinders it would hold??????

Well, I know how you all like photos.
Started installing the Galvalume panels today. First, had to install 1x4's on 24" centers, using 3" screws through the imitation 1/2" plywood into the trusses. 2 screws at each truss. First time using a star, guess it's really a torx, but love em.
Now if the morons that built the barn had taken a few minutes to straighten and space the trusses, my day would of been much better. The barn was built over 20 years ago, I never noticed how some of the trusses are rolled.

Anyway, enough whining, got about half of the strips down and started on the metal panels. This went much better. Now that I'm back into the swing of doing this, I should finish half of the roof tomorrow.

First panel in place, I used wood blocks to keep the edge of panel even with roof.

Only helper to show up today, a pair of vice grips. The panels will slide right off without it.

Tape sealant, ready for second panel.

Got 5 panels in today, tomorrow will be better, I'm back in tune on doing this.

Here half of the roof done. Went quicker as I had my wife helping me, I did wear her out though.
