Ceiling fan suggestion & placement

Construction on my 30x28x13 will begin in the next couple weeks.
Ceiling will be insulated with R49 and drywalled. Walls will be 2x6x12 studs with R19 batt insulation. Will maybe add plywood or drywall at later time.
Two 9x8 doors will be insulated R18 panel & window.

Plan on heating with Mr Heater Big Maxx 50K BTU unit mounted in top left corner as shown in photo.

Location in Central Ohio so primary use for fan will be heat circulation to reduce energy costs in cold months where I will keep it at ~50°F all the time except when I'll be out there very occasionally working. Secondary use would be to blow air to cool off while working in the warmer, muggier summer months.

Do you think I'd be better off with something like the Fenceham 84" from Home Depot currently selling for $319 (low RPM, low watt, DC motor, high CFM, probably better for cold months) or would 1-2 Westinghouse 56" from Home Depot for $61 suffice (high RPM, higher watt, lower CFM, probably better for warm months)?

Additionally I'd like some advice on ideal placement for best circulation while minimizing shadows from high bay lights. I've attached a diagram showing placement of everything (9 rectangles are high bay lights surface mounted to ceiling, heater in top left corner, two columns for 2-post lift in left bay).

Lastly, And what size downrod is recommended? Home Depot suggests the 84" fan be mounted roughly 10' above the floor meaning a 36" downrod but do you all agree, and would that be the same for smaller 56-60" fans.

Let me know!

I've looked at the Westinghouse 56" as well and I think I'm going to go for that. For the purposes of air circulation, I believe this will do the job at over 5000 cfm. Not sure about the down rod, but I would think at least 24" if not longer to support proper airflow in and out from the fan at full boogie. I did read that the Westinghouse unit was not reversible, so double check that before committing to it.

I just installed 4 CanArm CP56HPWP fans in my 36x48 they supposedly are 27,500 CFM. I haven't installed the wall control yet, I plan to do that today. I chose this fan because we have 4 of the more basic CanArm fans in our shop at work and they move air pretty good. If you go with an industrial style fan like I did it will make your life easier if you prep for j-hook installation which is what most industrial fans are. I installed residential style ceiling fan boxes so I ended up buying adapter u-clamps to make everything work.

Yes I did notice Westinghouse wasn’t reversible but doesn’t seem to be a deal breaker as it should help push the warm air down during cold months on the standard direction.

Yes I was looking at the 56” and 60” Canarms as well but have to think that stated CFM is not accurate based on the RPM and blade size. Menards lists CFM of both models at 7100 which seems more reasonable but would expect there to be some variance between the two.

Do you feel one of these 56-60” fans would do the job for my building size? If so where would you place it?

I was hoping the larger 84” would work due to lower energy use but I’m just concerned when I need to feel the air blowing to cool off in the summer that this won’t do the job. Anybody have any insights on that?

I got my canarm fans working yesterday. They do produce a lot of air movement. I am happy with them.

I ended up going with Canarm CP60HPWP and noticed the upper canopy is not sized properly to mount within 1/8" to the ceiling as noted in the instructions. I reached out to the manufacturer who responded that this is "normal" and how this fan has always been which doesn't really seem acceptable.

Has anyone else ran across this issue? If so, have you found a replacement canopy that works?

Supra97 I have the same issue with mine. If I draw the hook up into the box far enough to get a closer gap I can't get the fan over the hook. If the hook is usable it leaves a giant gap. I haven't finished my ceiling yet so I just tightened the j bolt after installing the fans. Once ceiling goes in there will be no way to unhook the fans. They are in a shop so I guess it really does not make much difference to me. They do a great job of moving air.

Question, my fan is mounted with the U-clamp and it sure seems the downrod has a lot of play and will sway when teh fan is on (my electrician hasn't got the wiring done yet, so I'm not certain). Does yours have the same issue?

Ok now I have another issue. The variable speed control isn’t doing anything. Bought the Canarm CNFRMC5 controller and everything is wired correctly. Forward reverse switch works fine fan is off in off position but runs at same speed no matter max or min on dial. I tried adjusting the min speed screw to no avail. I measured the voltage coming out of the yellow wire on the controller and is 120V regardless of where the speed dial is set to. I’m assuming that’s not normal. Any input? Wondering if I got a defective unit.

Hard for anyone to say on that issue. I know I was pretty meticulous about getting the wiring right (red/blue/yellow/black), which was more work than I needed it to be! But I have 4 of these running in my 40x64 shop, and they work well and the switch works as designed. If you've double checked that you don't have a wire wrong, then it must be a bad controlled. But I would go double check.

As far as the fan hooks, I mounted mine up far enough to allow me to get the cover flush.......this may be tricky depending on your application, but when I installed the 2x6 to mount it to......I just raised it up high enough to give me that flush option.

Overall, I am very happy with the fans......they move a lot of air, and are pretty quiet overall. On full blast you do hear a light helicopter sound, but they are spinning awful fast, and I figure you have to expect some noise.

An update...the third controller was the charm (first was DOA completely, second speed control didn't work). Only thing is now fan motor makes audible buzzing at medium to high speed where as it didn't on the last controller that was pretty much permanently set to high. Pretty disappointed with my experience thus far although I will say the seller is making it right for me.

I have a decent buzz from mine as well.......and the aluminum plate the controller mounts to seems to get warm and smells like something isnt right......but the fans work great, and move a ton of air!

I dont know what to do with it at this point......its only a 5 amp max switch, so not sure whats causing it to get warm......or smell......likely the same issue. I know its wired correctly, just wish there was a better switch option. I did get a replacement switch for free from Zoro (where I got everything), and it works fine now.....but I still notice an abnormal pop when I turn the fan off and on......guess we'll see how long this one lasts!

I know this is an old thread but I am currently going to the same thing and was going to order 2-56" Canarm ceiling fans but didn't know about the whole J-Hook thing, my electrician did the rough-in but there is no j-hook just 2 fan boxes. So I was going to purchase the u-clamp bracket like you but do you have a picture of how it looks? Just hope it won't look the other post below, hoping the canopy will be flush to the ceiling

Thanks
