Cement mixer question?..

Hey folks! I have an old electric cement mixer a buddy gave me.
It has a burnt out electric motor.
That said i have a baldor electric motor that has a weight on the shaft from my wifes old treadmill. Would this work for the mixer? I know the motor is variable speed. Maybe a speed controller?

You know how "consumer product" horsepower is. I've seen 5 horsepower vacuum cleaners too.

That might have a DC motor with a speed control, the whole thing might have to be used. I think mine had a 1/2 hp motor on it, it has to be sealed type, but with that sais I have seen many mixers with a open motor with a shield over it to keep the moisture out.

A 5hp motor would draw over 50 amps if you could find one that ran on 120v...

How big is the old motor on the mixer?

Concrete mixer have a huge gear advantage..........1/3 to 1/2 HP electric is all that need for 2 bag mixer size.

I bought a Kushlan 600DD and was surprised how strong it was due to the gear reduction. 3/4 HP reduced to 28 RPM according to their specs. The motor is all housed in a gearbox that required me to go to Autozone to buy gear oil because it comes dry.

I mixed 2, 1/2 cubic yard "pours" in about 30 minutes each time (about 8-10 batches each.) I mixed it by shovels of gravel/sand mix and added portland cement, so I didn't know exactly how much material was mixed per batch. The manual say 4 bags of 80 lb mix per batch.

As far as your mixer, you probably want a steep gear/belt reduction (triple reduction?) to get to spin slow with a 1725 RPM motor. Otherwise the variable speed option is the way to got.

Got a 1/2 hp mixer at the home despot many years ago. It was always on the ragged edge of being under powered and would occasionally stall out at the most inconvenient times. I finally replaced the motor with a 3/4 hp motor and it made all the difference in the world.

The mixer is 1/2 hp.. but the treadmill is a 3hp i guess .
I think ill look for a 3/4 hp motor.

HP will get you to the wall , torque will take you through the wall

That is what is on mine.

Sometimes needs a little help to get the drum rotating, but it still works when I need it every few years.
