Oh yes. The side mount openers are definitely on my list. Planned to do them, high mount tracks and new garage doors all at one time but that project is down the road a bit longer.

I think you've seen, I just added them in my garage. Very happy. It was a similar situation, I waited until most other things were done until doing them.

Thank you! Size of the garage is around 34' wide by 20' deep or so. There are some extra little areas off of that main size. The garage doors consist of a single and a double door. I think they are 8' and 16'.

Chad, I was rummaging through the earlier pages of this thread and I wanted to ask you a question. How does your current garage compare to your previous one now that you have put all the time and effort into whipping it into shape? Love to hear a comparison if you have a chance.

Chad,

That's a great garage - Love the solid red back wall! The rest of the house is beautiful as well. Funny how that works, isn't it!

Thanks for the kind words Andy. I just never seem to stop with projects at home in all the rooms but I sure enjoy thinking of new improvements and doing things so much more when I can do them for half the cost on my own.

I love your garage set up as well - very much my kind of taste.

Great question Rick. It's funny you ask because I find myself still looking at my old garage pictures and comparing to my new one. I have to say I like my new garage better overall mainly because it is a 3 car of course. I made a better choice with the metal Husky cabinets in the new place. I liked the white cabinets for looks but they fell apart with the moisture in the garage. I have pretty high ceilings in both but my old one had even higher ceilings.

The only thing I "think" I miss is my black and white floor in the old place. I really did like the brighter look and sometimes wonder if I should have done the tuffshield in black and white since it would stay glossy. Something about the red and gray colors with the black and white just looks really good to me but it is looking a little dated probably.

What I have to remember is that the black/white looked great but it was not practical. I spent way too much time trying to keep the white tiles clean and being bothered by it not looking perfect.

With my new racedeck design I feel like it is a "more mature" version of the old me and a little more classy and toned down yet still sharp. I think as I add more lighting it will really make the whole space pop more and I'm liking it. So far I have much better lighting in my new garage than I've ever had so that is fun to have the lights better now - still have more to go on that but getting there.

One thing my old garage had that I upgraded was the insulated carriage door. I would still like those in my new garage but it will come in time.

I have apple tv and a much bigger tv in the new garage. Pretty cool for watching shows and using it for music and screen saver.

Overall I know that I will get my new one exactly where I want it and actually go beyond the old garage once I add a car lift, jackmaster side mounts, etc so I'm looking forward to the future changes.

I'm most excited about having it pretty close to how I want it and getting to add more cars to go IN the garage over the years which is really the point for me.

What are your thoughts on my old and new space? Anything you would do or change if it was your space that I'm overlooking to really make it great?

I'm glad you asked me that question - it is fun to still daydream about fun little changes and remember how blessed I am to get to build my dream garage twice now and combine my favorite parts.

Great response, Chad. I made a few comments below.

Your old garage was so expansive, I thought it WAS a triple. I had to go back and really look in order to see that it wasn't. Crazy. Those shots of you with the paint roller boggle my mind. You must have had 15' ceilings in that thing. Very similar in layout to your current garage, but you now have all that extra space. Your old white cabinets look pretty "old school" compared to your new setup. Plus you have really integrated them in with the new place with the colors. Very cool.

The only thing I "think" I miss is my black and white floor in the old place. I think you are right, the black/white is a "classic" look, whereas your new scheme gives a more modern edge. I'm biased though. If I were you, I would hang as many of those 4-lamp high-bay fixtures as you can fit. Can you sister them together? (my electrical terminology is pathetic)

One thing my old garage had that I upgraded was the insulated carriage door. I would still like those in my new garage but it will come in time.

Sounds awesome, but sounds expensive, especially with it being a triple. It's good to have stuff to look forward to.

Largest living space in the house, right? Awesome.

Audis. Lots of Audis.

What are your thoughts on my old and new space? Anything you would do or change if it was your space that I'm overlooking to really make it great?

I have no big suggestions for you. Lighting is something you are obviously paying close attention to these days, and your longer term goals of upgrading your door and adding a lift are worthy goals. I look forward to watching them happen.

I'm glad you asked me that question - it is fun to still daydream about fun little changes and remember how blessed I am to get to build my dream garage twice now and combine my favorite parts.

Yeah, you got it pretty good dude. P-r-e-t-t-y good.

Thanks Rick! I like that Audi comment - funny cause my wife would love an Audi R8. Figures she would shoot for the top. I have plans for her to have a separate fun car and wish it could be the R8!

So, I picked up a FOURTH 6 bulb high bay fixture. I've found a new addiction for lighting. I really love the place being lit up and no amount of light will be enough. Funny you mention linking a couple together. I was considering that over on the double side OR I could pull down the track lighting and mount two more there which would give me 6 total of the 6 bulb fixtures. That'd be pretty bright.

OK everyone - I need your opinions on my lighting. I have 3 out of 4 new fixtures up. They are 6 bulb high bays with sylvania 5000k bulbs. I ALSO have a total of 12 CFL flood light bulbs in my track fixtures at 600 lumens for each bulb. (these used to be all halogen so I really like the clean white CFL bulbs)

My question is - should I pull down the track lights and replace with 2 more high bay fixtures in those locations OR keep the track lights and just link a couple more of the high bays together over on the double side?

I really don't think the track lights are adding much light so it's just a matter of does the look of them add to the space? They add some nice lighting down on the cabinets and photos but that's about it.

I'm leaning toward just pulling them and having a couple more high bays up in that area but I'm gone to the trouble of buying and installing these and just not sure how it really looks as a nice garage "feature" or not really noticeable (or even dated??)

Let me know your thoughts! Here are some random pics:

Chad,

I personally like the track lights. They give a nice touch to the garage. If you're not needing more light in that area, I'd leave them in. If you find you don't have enough light over the front of the car/cabinet area then of course that's a different story.

Its really a no lose situation. I do like the idea of having the fluorescent tubes in the middle of the garage and then the flood lights sending light against your Husky Power wall :)

Another vote to keep the track lights.

I find that having both accent lighting AND shop lighting is ideal.

For instance - I use dimmable, warm (3000k) recessed cans for hangout/beer-drinking lighting and use bright (5000k) shop lights when I'm actually doing something productive.

As I said eariler post. The track lights are nice accent to show garage off when not working. I personally like them. Do you have track and new flourscents on different switches to turn each on independantly? If you feel theyre dated see what new fixtures they offer to fit tracks. I've seen a lot offered.

Have a good one, Gerard

Oh there are always plans but I have knocked out a lot. My next big plan would be a couple of new carriage doors and side mount lifts so I can get rid of the tracks on the ceiling. Doing that will make way for a 4 post lift to store an extra car or two down the road...

Ha ha for sure! I can tell you I'm really working on that and should be within 1.5 to 2 years and I'll have another one. I really want to keep my camaro and have the viper too. I love old and new school muscle both.

Yes I think of Rick always finding something new to change. I don't have much more planned other than the new doors mentioned above. Would love some heat and air one day too. I really, really love my new space.

It has been nice to get back to working on the Camaro. I replaced all the steering components myself then had it aligned. I also had the windows tinted and put on some new emblems/louvers I got for Christmas. I also ordered some new tail lights and headlights that are on the way. Has been great doing some updates to the car. Here are some updated pictures.

I am reading this thread for the first time and see that we live near each other. I am just north of you in Gallatin. I am in love with your garage!! Great work!!

Thanks guys sounds like some good votes for keeping them. I think I will get that 4th fixture up this weekend and see how things are then. The other thing is once led par 30 bulbs come down in price using those in the track lights would really make a difference in the future.

Thanks Man! That is very cool. When I first came to the Nashville area I drove to and worked in Gallatin for a about a year. I was there when those tornados came through back in '98 or so.

I was watching a This Old House and saw a retro fit into a kitchen using track lighting and all the new fixtures they make. Really like a new use for what ppl thought "that's old ugly track lighting". I use them over my bench in this matter right now.

That's cool I watch that show all the time too and saw that on. It did surprise me they went with track lights. I did browse Home Depot the other day and they do make some nice heads. You have some nice light over your workbench with them.

I got the 4th fixture up today. It is getting preeeeetty bright in there! It does make the floor color look much lighter which was the point and also having those corners and areas towards the garage doors lit up is really nice. I've never had those corners lit up. This is one of my favorite upgrades. I'm still leaning toward losing the track lights and putting two more of these fixtures up because I like them so much and getting pretty quick at installing them. I also love symmetry and not having a 3/3 matched set might drive me crazy. Either way I could leave it alone right now and be good to go at least. Those 4 new fixtures give me 68,400 lumens! Pics from today of course:

Looks great, lighting made a huge difference.

Just to plant another seed for you. What about doing a frosted film on those two windows and losing the blinds?

We have become the same person. I totally agree.

You have trained me well Sensei.

Might not be bad. I bought the 2" faux blinds not too long ago. The sun comes in hard through those windows in the summer so I might actually need window tint instead. I've been having to keep the blinds closed often so not sure how the film would hold up. I do like the clean look though. My last house I just left the blinds off all together and liked the look but they sill was much higher for privacy.

That Fram light is cool as hell!!!!!! Awesome garage by the way.

Thanks!

I still have to do my garage insulation and really likely planning for two more 6 bulb fixtures. I'm just liking all the light so much I want more.

BUT....detour back to the floor. I feel like buying some extra pieces and messing around some. Already got a quote back from RD so I'm serious!

I can pretty easily add another red double stripe with black to create 3 separate parking pad zones. I can move my left side red border over left one column and that frees up the middle black strip I need. I only need to buy red tiles to make another double dividing line.

The OTHER option is just to omit the current red/black stripe down the one single side and fill it in with all Graphite color. I think that might make the garage feel more expansive and bigger like my last garage but I do like the red color so much that it's hard to say.

Throw some opinions my way!

Just an idea. I found the film helps to take out some of the heat that comes through but more importantly it still lets light in, and looks clean and simple while doing it.

Thanks Rick! I like that Audi comment - funny cause my wife would love an Audi R8. Figures she would shoot for the top. I have plans for her to have a separate fun car and wish it could be the R8!

I alluded to this earlier but here is the new ride in the garage. We both love this little convertible. It is a 2008 Mercedes AMG SLK55. This has the V8-355 HP with 7 speed paddle shift. The car really romps! The cool story behind this car is my wife and I rented a 6 cyl version on her big 40th bday trip to California and fell in love with the car. We drove it up and down the coast of Malibu. I had to get the V8 of course or it would not be allowed in the garage. I surprised her with this as a Christmas gift and she had NO idea it was coming. I was the only person that knew about it. I'll post the video of her seeing it. Classic. It slowed me down on getting a viper again but this has been really fun for both of us to share and enjoy together. Going to need a lift pretty soon (I hope!)
