Champion HR5D12 Compressor Problem

I humbly submit for your perusal and consideration an industrial Champion dual pump compressor from the 80's that I have just acquired.

It runs and pumps up to pressure, but once it shuts off it blows off from the release valve fitting on the front of the pump. This is on the "Cover, Governor Housing" according to the schematics I have. I pulled the cap, spring and ball on the "Release Valve" and found nothing enlightening.

On the other pump the same thing is happening, but because the release valve is attached to a UFO looking thing that apparently controls automatic draining, the air blows out though the gap in the two sides of the UFO looking thing.

Anyone here familiar with these R15 pumps who could guide me in fixing it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. See the pics below for translation from dioese to English. Thanks.

The UFO thing is an automatic tank drain. It is designed to momentarily purge air from the tank bottom (via a dip tube) to remove water, which comes out the section of red hose. Two things can be at play here, there could be a hole in the purge valve diaphragm, or the tank check valve is dirty or faulty. The second scenario is more likely. To test, disconnect the line from the drain valve and start the compressor. If air comes from the unloader continuously, the tank check valve is bad, or clogged. The check valve is located where the main air line goes from the pump into the tank. Remove the line, the small unloader line, and unscrew the check valve from the tank. You can often disassemble and clean the things if they get dirty, replacements are easy to find from Grainger.

Thanks for the reply, Greatbear. I finally got to work on it today and found that both the check valves at the tank were corroded and not free to move.

I pulled them off and took them apart. I bead blasted the metal parts, cleaned off the gunk, lubed them and put them back together. Now it is working.

I still have some niggling issues to deal with, but I have pressure and great gobs of reserve.

Thanks again.

I am sorry to resurrect a thread this old but i'm having a problem with an R15 as well. Does anyone know what that box on the right hand side of the compressor is with the wire going to it and the red button?

In the top pic the button can be seen next to the unloader.
In the middle pic it's next to the tag that sways '1139'.
In the bottom pic it can be seen to the right of the compressor with the hardline going into the top of it.

Thanks!

That sounds like the low oil level shutoff.
