Well, like the title says- Is there such a vise as a Charles Parker No. 4? That # was clearly visible on the side of the vise, but doing a quick search didn't give me any info. Btw, this vise is pretty clean, jaws are worn, but not 100% worn out, the moveable jaw has about 1/4" to 5/16" slop i&o. What would be a good price to offer the seller?

Well, not yet. One of the techs at work brought it in to use in the shop and all the other techs have told him it isn't any good because it doesn't have pipe jaws to hold axles. He got it out of a storage unit that his girlfriends father had and he really needs some money.

Greetings!
If it is a Parker 4X (and Parker really did use "X's") then it will be about 5 1/4" width jaw stationary vise from about 1900 -1915 or so. It will be a heavier class of Parker from
the Superior lineup of machinist vises and probably tip the scales at about 118 pounds. That is massive for a stationary vise of any brand. Parker got a tad goofy with their numbers and so sometimes a number would be a 5 1/4" vise and then another catalog would show it 5 years later as a 5 1/2" vise. Three things I can guarantee you about it:
1. It is a stationary vise
2. It is going to be over 100 pounds
3. It is 5" to 5 1/2" wide at the jaw
If it were most of us, I could gaurantee another thing......we would all love to have it!

Oh.....as to price......offer $40, be prepared for $50, and take it at $60. Slop you can work out with shims on the lead screw or even a wonderful roller thrust washer if you are feeling spiffy. Check the Acme threads to see if they are still square and not sharp like a knife edge. Parker didn't use "buttress" threads like Athol so square is good.
