I don't remember what it was about but I know it wasn't breakers when I asked an inspector why I couldn't do something using a product that I thought would be better for the application. (I was looking for permission, there wasn't a failed inspection) He agreed but said because it's not listed. I asked why and the response was that the manufacturer has to pay to get a listing and then pay a fee for every listing for every product sold. Square D would have to pay for a listing to replace Siemens, then pay for at least two listings on every breaker sold. I don't think there is a darn thing different, design wise, between an Eaton BR and a CL, but they only have to pay for the extra listings on CL sales while they only pay for the BR listing with BR breakers. That whole thing might be rubbish, but it makes sense to me.It's frustrating that some panels/ breaker combinations that physically fit are not approved, no doubt due to lack of testing and certification. I get it, it's all about safety. Maybe a square D breaker does not apply the proper clamping force on a Siemens bus, who knows why some are approved and some are not, it depends on vendor testing. Maybe it's politics or business! It would be nice if there was body like NIST or IEEE that developed standards for manufactures to follow, or at least comply with. It would be a lot easier to figure out what worked where. For now we just need to read the label on the panel, and who has time to read these days!![]()
