During WW-I the United States Army shipped a lot of supplies to Europe. Some of it was shared with Allies (like Italy) and much was sold locally when the war ended. Today, those cans of beef would be shipped in a card board box. In 1918 they used crates that would last a century. You are lucky to have it. Most were burned for firewood.

Undoubtedly that crate has some value to collectors and re-enactors so I'd stick it on ebay maybe. I still find more stuff leftover from WWI than from WWII in French Brocante markets, from shell cases to gas masks and other equipment.

I just skimed the whole thread tonight. You really have come a long ways!! The garage is way cool!! You just need some old helve hammers and machinery to make it complete. The grounds, the way you cobble stoned most of it looks cool. The house is my wifes dream!! You started this thread in may of 2009 and you really came a long ways. Your english improved a bunch as well!! You should be proud!!

Thanks to you garagefriends, including for the information on the crate: my town is next to french border so the opposite of WWI front (Austria and Jugoslavia) so it concernes probably supplies sold locally when the war ended as suggested by bib. I found the box perfectly suited to hold the LPs and is what I believe will do with it in our music-corner in the living room!

Today I take opportunity to document some object hanging on the walls of the house and workshop to give even more Citro-charme to the place..

Many of us use to hangin their home, garage or in their bedroom pictures, posters, sculptures, models, drawings, carvings, jewelry or various artifacts related to the automobile world, I've my little citro-pinacotèque.

In this ground-floor kitchen corner, almost involuntarily I collected few objects that recall epochal moments in the history of Citroen..

normal_pinacoteque1.JPG

This is undoubtedly the most precious piece (gift of a great friend and citro-extimateur Corrado) it's a newspaper page of the April 9, 1919 that advertises the first model of Citroen car, the Type A.

Great emphasis is given to the fact that this is the first car built in Europe with the Fordist system of the assembly, promising (the first time of many times...) to make the "car for everyone":

citropinacoteque2.JPG

The text refers directly to the first day of sales will be April 25, 1919, almost a century ago..

At the bottom, on the kitchen scale, is positioned a 1:18 scale model of the 2CV unveiled at the Paris Oct. 7, 1948: another "A" model for Citroen for another post-war reconstruction time..

The French half-liter bottles with candle has nothing to do with the Citroen.. but refer a little to the dinners in the taverns of the famous French ace of World War I during his brief pauses in the hunt for Red Baron and his flying circus!

tom-everhart-peanuts-snoopy-last-supper.jpg

Right next, a reproduction of the historic Michelin advertising poster (1898) first entroducing the Michelin obese (yet durable..) testimonial in act of raising a glass full of nails and broken glass...

Nunc est bibendum!

normal_pinacoteque3.JPG

The tire michelin "drink the obstacle!", with great envy of it's deflated and patched competitors...

Neocid DDT, which disinfects and strengthens the body's natural defenses, we add to each food we cook, as the song says..

ddt_is_good_for_me.jpg

And now, just above the gas stove in the city, exposed to fumes and splashes of tomato and french chips, another historical piece..

.. a reproduction of the poster advertising the launch of the Traction Avant 7CV presented to the public in 1934. The caption lists the many futurisms of another "car for everyone" guaranteed by the absolute supremacy industrial of the establishments of Quai de Javel, Paris:

normal_pinacoteque4.JPG

With the launch of the Traction-Avant closes (as a result of rampant economic crisis of the thirties) the Epic of Andre Citroen and its crazy business. He also goes out July 5, 1935. In a few months his factory pass into the hands of the Michelin family and a new era will open..

PS: on the left the handy spray for DDT..

The garage also house for cans.. And also a famous photograph that captures the world altitude record for a motor vehicle, established by Jacques Cornet and Henry Luchon in 1953 during the raid trois Ameriques: Mount Chacaltaya (Bolivia), 5420 meters:

I've found some old pictures I took years back in a Citrogarage's backyard. Everytime I take a look in this thread it reminds me of my mixed feelings back then. I'm glad you do restore your 2cv's and keep the best pieces of 'junk' as memorablia (or spare parts).

Love seeing your posts of saving old garage in Italy . . and especially enjoy hearing you are saving old Citroen cars!! There are some old TV shows playing on USA TV from 70's and classic Citroen cars are in the shows.

QUESTION: Are you familiar with CNG (compressed natural gas) there in Italy which is much farther along than USA?? Recently Fuelmaker (now called BRC Fuelmaker) moved from Canada/USA to Italy. They build Home Refueling Appliance (HRA) that can fill up car with compressed natural gas at your own garage. See www.iangv.org for number of public cng pumps and vehicles running on cng there in Italy. Have you seen any cng vehicles in your area of Italy, or conversion shop which modifies vehicles to run on CNG? USA only has 123,000 cng vehicles while Italy has 779,000 !!!

Hi Luca,

How badly does winter effect the paving? Do you find that it moves around at all with the freezing and thawing?

I am considering doing something very similar but we have severe winters where I live. Temps can get down to -20C or even -30C.

Great job on the whole project!

Hi garagefriends, first of all I'm sorry for my absence, sencond an answer is required:

QUESTION: Are you familiar with CNG (compressed natural gas) there in Italy which is much farther along than USA?? Recently Fuelmaker (now called BRC Fuelmaker) moved from Canada/USA to Italy. They build Home Refueling Appliance (HRA) that can fill up car with compressed natural gas at your own garage. BRC haedquarter is less than 10 km from Citrogarage (http://www.brc.it/getcontent.aspx?t=1&nid=238&lang=it) although I personally have not had the opportunity to convert to natural gas anyone of my historic vehicle so far. Many of my friends use CNG cars. CNG veicles are so diffused in Italy due to gasoline and diesel are almost equally high expensive due to lack of petroleum and high taxation (about 1.7 €/liter). CNG historical application starts in Italy by AGIP in 1946 ( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agip ) it is a substitute for oil that the nation has always been lacking, unlike large deposits of natural gas were discovered and exploited in the Po valley between the years 40 and 60. The "Agipgas" logo (a cat-version of the more famous six-legs dog Agip logo) hanging next to the door of my garage refers to CNG, also sold by AGIP in cylinders for domestic use.

Third... the promised garagenews: in the middle of summer we proceeded to paint the outside of citrogarage ..

August 15th, thanks to the lack of desire to reach crowded destinations , the day was fatal to the decoration of the facade of the stretch of Citrogarage which had now completely dry plaster..
normal_garr.JPG

It colud be interesting to retrace the steps before and after starting right from the renovation façade of the barn with a specific wet-strength plaster:

normal_fac.JPG

The horizontal crack you can see at the height of the electical conduit that runs along the front shows a warping of the 1st stage concrete floor rised in the early sixties: it replaced the bricks arches and vaults of the original barn, a mess of course, but also a sacrifice that allowed the gain of almost a meter above the floor of the barn. Even the expansion of the door (and the opening of a second one in the head wall) and the opening of rectangular windows instead of small square windows was at that time, probably even the door had been until then positioned in the middle of the south wall , at the second window where they found traces of closure of a large opening, or rather two opposing north-south.

Starting from the beginning, last winter we proceeded with the reorganization of the fund after demolition of the remains of channels for the removal of the manure system consisting of a hard concrete with additives and with something that gives it a bluish color, probably specific for the stables. Demolition and excavation employed suitable mechanical tools. In the first picture you can see the doors buffered recognizable by the different texture of the bricks and the foundation almost absent.

The ancient foundation, made up of large boulders drowned in lime, came back to light..

In some points foundation seems made of rocks such as "cyclopean walls", in other pebbles arranged in alternating inclinedcourses according to a medieval technique..

The space of this old stabble was in my availability for the past ten years, but another thing is being able to really benefit of it! It needs time, effort and above all a lot of money. That clay-soil plagued with pebbles, gravel and cement blocks had become the receptacle of the most immovable scrap vehicle including a pair of hydropneumaticd citroen DS cars -out service and very difficult to carry outside-

normal_sta.JPG

normal_staaaa.JPG

Here the infill of the door without foundation, even though the entire perimeter will receive a lightly reinforced concrete underpinning that will serve mostly to protect the wall from rising damp, rampant in the area due to a very shallow water table.

We proceed to a first fill with dry material and well-drained consists of pebbles and coarse gravel in which to make space for underground utilities (electric and cable lines for loading and unloading of water)..

Ended predispositions -hoping not to have forgotten nothing- we have a welded mesh and can start throwing in some chopped pieces that will arrive at the highth of about -12 / -15 cm from the finished surface and will have a slight slope longitudinal , starting from the fixed part of old door on the south side, will earn 16-18 cm of about 25 meters allowing you to have a height a little 'top of the door to head to the east allowing stuffing maybe even a medium van and facilitating the flow of' water in case of cleaning.

At the same form also takes a maxi-niche in the nerve into which the water system pipes and conduits above the main electrical panel:

The planned washes meanwhile begin with a peeling era of a thousand layers of lime sprayed the ceiling with disinfectant function at a time when the inhabitants of the house were dedicated to cattle. The operation is carried out with a pressure washer and hand scraper operator wheeled on a scaffold and has waxed jacket and yellow boots. Follows brushed and general cleaning of the floor with recovery of four cartloads of debris:

Consolidation of the walls with suitable material breathable wet-strength followed by a thin shaving based on lime..

In a moment of optimism I'm projected in the finishes, here prematurely replacing the old connection door with an.. equal one but healthier, isolated and reinforced:
