Once again, I admire your craftsmanship and determination to preservation. The refrigerators remind me of the Fridgedaire and Admiral brands we grew up with at home. Thank you for keeping us posted with your projects.

In the pictures of your brother polishing the refrigerator and guitar, can you tell us a little about the truck in the background? That looks like a very useful vehicle.

Bonjour Luca
I'm french and I drove CITROEN from ages ! two reasons enough to be sure i'm well here
As all others readers , congrats "chapeau bas" as you can say, for your incredible and untired job
But to be constructive (lees you, but I'll put my brick)
- regarding the "dual clock/timer" of your refrigerator : In the good ol' days of the noisy and thrilled compressor, american-made items (I owned a kelvinator with that) have had a kind of "discounter time" clock to choose to un-duty in the night, or when you've a babe at home. So you turn-on "stop in five hours" and, miracle ! after 5 hours of rrr-clic-clac from the clock, it stop the fridge
- regarding cobbles of your pavment : I'm in the southwest of France, so in our middle -age (from X to XII century) it was very often to use cobbles for places, paths or farmyard....especially with the "scallops design" you use it, but not only to be beautiful (despite ours southern souls are always artistic) but also practic : if you made the design on a gently slope with the "point" upper, the semi-circular "bottom" side, the water (from rain) is evacuated elsewhere on the two externals sides
Hope I'm clear enough !!!
- at last, regarding you house and his decoration items, you didn't mention of the marvelous old "targhe" you have, especially those from the 32/76 black era ! what a pitty
If you want french plates with CITROEN garage ads send my a PM
Thank you for your kindly topic et bon courage
Yves

a HY CITROEN "tube" crudely customized ! and (re)painted in orange DDE (the administration in charge of roads and safety, in france)

 and here's the story of Kirghiz , the double-cabin 1974 Citroen HY Indenor motor that became brother of our 1966 white and blue HY 72:

normal_hyduuuuuuuuuu.JPG

For almost two years we were looking for a vehicle that could take over our 2cv fourgonette that suitably-equipped guaranteed travel and rest comfortable and safe in every corner of the globe, but that would soon struggled to contain a four-people family..

normal_DSC_2682.JPG

normal_DSC_2798.JPG

normal_libia1_259.jpg

Various hypotheses crowding the mind, finally, attention has focused on a rare survivor of HY plateau double-cab (SIX-PLACES!) a vehicle specially transformed from a basic two places plateau version in the 60's and 70 to be used by DDE, albeit rather ill-treated and painted over, preserves' original livery AC315 Orange Kirghiz whose name is inspired, I like to think, to the sunset-color of the mountains of the exotic Ex-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan.. suggestive rather not?

800px-KyrgyzAlatauMtns_Kyrgyzstan.jpg

And here's the original Kirgiz as it appeared in the ad ..

normal_lato_sinistro.JPG

normal_lato_destro.JPG

Immediately started preparations for complex and distant expedition that would capture it and safely tranfer the "beast" to our Citroantropological National Museum where it could be studied and restored, with the contribution of a large scientific community of citro-entusiasts..

14 July 2011.. (.. More) Today is the day!|

Thanks to the help of many friends, including Mario, a big fan citroenista whose intervention was decisive in identifying the strong and powerful emergency-vehicle that would allow the fulfillment of the company, my brother and I we left for a mission that would have totaled nearly 1700 km in just over 24 hours bringing the historic success: at 3:40 am in the morning July 13, 2011 the monstrous vehicle literally landed in my backyard..

normal_hhhhh.JPG

normal_hhhh.JPG

normal_hhhhhh.JPG

normal_hhhhhhh.JPG

The next day, after a well deserved rest, we proceeded to the first investigation and verification: it is a vehicle of 1974 the type IN2 or equipped with a diesel engine INDENOR.

As mentioned above, this vehicle was destinated exclusively to serving DDE, the French roads maintenance service. Subsequently it was acquired, almost thirty years ago, by the man who ceded it us after using it almost exclusively for hunting in he's propriety situated in a wooded and sparsely inhabited region stretching between Clermont-Ferrand and Toulose, where it's hard in effect to imagine human activities more evolved than those that are practiced more or less from the Paleolithic..

The effects of this hunting activity are quite readable on the body of the subject: Here the two additional lights which dazzled the wild boars and then finish them off with a shot of grille ..

normal_hhhhhhhhh.JPG

On the back .. and a practical "washable" plateau made by multiple layers of sheet metal, tar coated, plywood and silicon (nothing has been spared to those poor sheet metal) to load the game while on the bottom, below the compartment of the double-cab has been converted into a cage for hunting dogs:

normal_hhhhhhhh.JPG

Here the access door to the rear bench ..

normal_hhhhhhhhhh.JPG

normal_hhhhhhhhhhh.JPG

And behold, the rack for rifles in "Texas style"..

normal_hyyyyyyy.JPG

The driver's seat with the seat mauled by one of the dogs..

normal_hyyyyyy.JPG

On the front, of the dashboard with switches typical of H diesel (the cromed element hides the red light of the glow plug):

normal_hyyyyyyyyy.JPG

Below the noisy and smelly diesel INDENOR motor..

normal_hyyyyyyyy.JPG

..dominated by the document compartment:

normal_cassetto.JPG

and a little 'behind the gearbox the battery holder (the two 6V batteries were properly merged into a 12V one):

.. And finally (for now) some other peculiar discovery:

This foot rest coated with aluminum, rather carefully finished (original equipment likely to be verified):

normal_hy~3.JPG

This horrible bumper-hook fastened to the body by four bolts M8 that barely hold up its own weight..

normal_hyyyyy.JPG

A beautiful optional spotlight CIBIE:

normal_hyyy.JPG

normal_hyyyy.JPG

Specific plastic light-holder to illuminate the license plate on the door left ..

normal_hydddddddd.JPG

Oh yeah, ..which plate? The one on the left door, removed years ago as the sister right or waterfall alone to rot and never recovered since, on private land, doors and plates are little more than a useless tinsel ..

normal_targhe.JPG

and finally the plate of weights and masses summary on the right side, perfectly preserved (or rebuilt?) despite the artistic repainting rock that "orangized" seals, taillights, crome-chevrons, aluminum details and even the radiator and hoses behind the grille..

Lucky you are to have the XDP88 !
This engine is also used by PEUGEOT for late 40, many 504 and early 505 but also for the challenger of the tube , the J7 PEUGEOT and later the early J9 PEUGEOT
No doubt you could find easely tons of spare parts !

Regarding your picture of kyrghiz republic :
Is it the jety-oguz pass ?? if not very similar with the taurus mountain upside and these peculliar "orange/ochre" colour

Thank you to noted my message...and what's about "tharge"

I return briefly on the situation at the East door of the garage: external yard has accumulated at various times successive layers of debris, dirt and various sediments unnaturally raising the courtyard floor..

normal_port~1.JPG

Time to be remedied. First excavations brought to light a stone slab which the ancient builders placed at the same height at which it is finally situated the garage floor concrete level.. a good sign!

normal_porttt.JPG

normal_portt~0.JPG

Unable to resist the heavy slab is raised with the thickness of wood .. Maybe it is an ancient burial? Has the fate wanted us to find it?

normal_portttt.JPG

The burial actually proves a hot-pit for the collection of sewage of the barn, now buried and probably not more ancient than nineteenth-century, half covered by the stone and half a brick vault already partly ruined..

normal_porttttt.JPG

The illusion of an archaeological discovery has now awakened the "anxiety for the old", I'm caught by the sudden desire to put together an old gazebo onion-style that I recovered, covered by a centuries-old vegetation, in the garden of an old eclectic villa of the surroundings.

In my disposal, seven uprights derived from T-profiles and a series of horizontal bands. The central plate has been completely destroyed: a heptagon is designed on a thick sheet metal than shaped and drilled. Using a scale and with the help of a collaborator you can proceed to a first provisional assembly ..

normal_gazz.JPG

normal_gaz.JPG

Temporary and unsatisfactory: the seven pillars, two have a different shape from the other, more abundant, probably the heptagon of the original plant resembled a kind of ellipse but it is almost impossible to match the horizontal bands with this oblong shape.

The only way to adapt them to the perimeter will be to place the two "oblong legs" next each other obtaining a shorter side coincident with the headband of access to the pavilion. So it assumes an "igloo type" conformation..

normal_gazzz.JPG

normal_gazzzz.JPG

normal_gazzzzzz.JPG

normal_gazzzzzzz.JPG

The table, (similar shape and coming from the same garden) it fits perfectly.. A sign that the desired shape from the old blacksmith has been today properly interpretated!

normal_gazzzzz.JPG

Both artifacts date back to the time when the Titanic plowed the oceans .. The old blacksmith would be pleased to know that they still fit!

A debate followed by a referendum among the residents and the visitors of the Citrogarage about whether it is appropriate to paint it white or leave it's "tour eiffel colour" resolves to preserve the patina of yesteryear: The discovery and application of a exceptional product "rust-protective", the Owatrol oil, will guagantee a perfect work:

normal_gazzzzzzzz.JPG

normal_gazzzzzzzzz.JPG

normal_gazzzzzzzzzz.JPG

The original onion-shaped spire made of zinc plates welded, unfortunately does not make the hoped-for figure on top of the gazebo: a century of winters has crushed and reduced to a trickle.. we proceed to a series of preliminary findings its reconstruction:

normal_gazzzzzzzzzzz.JPG

normal_gazzzzzzzzzzzz.JPG

In the meantime, a mesh of pleasantly rusty iron wire is woven between the posts and along the sides to support the transfer and the grip of vegetation..

What better vine is there to choose for this classic pergola than a grape varietal from your region? lol

Luca, as always, it is fascinating to read your very interesting thread posts!

I was hoping the slab you unearthed was part of an early Roman ruin or a section of the ancient Roman road 'via Aemilia'. lol

Incredible work Luca! I have an obsession with old buildings and love all the details you put into this one. Did you happen to draw any floor plans or elevations of it?

Luca, so the weights on the orange truck. Do I understand correctly that the empty weight is 1.35 metric ton (2,970 lbs US) and fully loaded is 2.95 metric ton (6,490 lbs US)? Thats a lot. Will it pull a trailer, such as a small camper trailer (I think the English call them Caravans) without too much hassle?

I know you will restore it, Soda blasting is popular with restorer in the US for a good clean way of stripping paint and rust and other crud, without warping the metal and making a mess.

Seeing the pics of the Citron van or box truck answered something I wondered about for years. A man who I used to work for, was a pilot and maintenance officer in a US Air Force RF-101 (McDonnell "Voodoo") Recon squadron stationed at an air base in France in the early 1960's. He told me of an incident where a French civilian contractor on the base accidentally drove his little "ratty corrugated tin truck" across the runway, just as a RF-101 was taking off. The aircraft, in full afterburner lifted off and just cleared the truck, but the exhaust blast shook and rattled the little truck and did everything but turn it over. He said the guy left the base and never returned.

I had imagined some kind of truck with a body built of corrugated tin on a flat bed. Now I know, it was a Citron HY of some type or another.

Look to hear more from you. This, and Lippyp's French stone house thread are my favorites.

i can answer in the place of Lucas as a French guy. you can find some things here, in french : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citroën_Type_H
weight was 1500 kg or 1.5 metric ton (1 ton is 1000 kg)
the power was 48 SAE HP in gasoline engine
and 57.5 SAE HP in diesel engine

1 hp (550 ft · lbf/s) = 745,6999 W
1 hp (boiler) = 9 809,50 W
1 hp (electric) = 746 W
1 hp (metric) = 735,49875 W
1 hp (U.K.) = 745,70 W
1 hp (water) = 746,043 W
sorry for my comment dear Lucas

Hallo garagefriends, every 6-8 months I'me here with some citro-updates ;)

A quick update from late august about the titanic-gazebo: the shoots of wisteria, a well-known pest of gardens not-enough dominated by the human hand, had progressed on the metallic texture at the speed of the panzers in the Russian steppe!

In late summer the coverage was almost complete and already able to create an enveloping environment for a pleasant dinner..

normal_DSCN1195.JPG

Here the lantern, waiting for restoration:

normal_gazzzzzzzzzzzzz.JPG

Meanwhile, The last meters of the wooden floor in the new garage are tormented by the presence of several wells transit pipes and ducts and inspection holes. In some cases could find application special blocks of wood provided with iron handles concealed. In some cases it was agreed to insert old cast iron manhole..

The square in front of the door starts to empty from stacked materials. On the right is ready the rail of the sliding door with the eight pieces of iron beam that will support it:

normal_P1150999.JPG

normal_P1160001.JPG

The big cherry fears for his life. Spontaneously born thirty years ago, has thrived in the corner moist and well fertilized in front of the stable, then in full swing. Unfortunately, on first examination the root system seems very superficial and mostly set at a level too high in relation to the plane of the courtyard project. It would be a shame to tear it down but the possibility is not excluded. On the other hand, the trees planted over the past ten years around the property are quite grown up.

Meanwhile, the door begins to set itself in the atelier. Will consist of two metal doors that really come from a mechanic-shop dating back to the twenties. Today these two doors will be included in a metal frame that will flow along the outer side of the wall, hanged on a rail:

normal_P1160007.JPG

normal_P1160003.JPG

I dreaded up the last I'll have to use some un-estetic new iron profiles for the frame but in the end, with some adaptation with respect to the initial idea, I was able to serve a corroded wreck that guarding the weeds for years and already begins to take its new form:

normal_P1160004.JPG

normal_P1160005.JPG

The cherry tree has shallow roots extended to almost all the open space, I see a dark looming in his next future..

It seemed to me yesterday but it was still a bright September in the photos of the courtyard in front of the former stable with cherry leafy, several things have changed: A general clean up of the area, the demolition of an old threshold to blows in a concrete and strong pruning of the tree have prepared the way for the excavator that in a couple of hours uprooted the plant and leveled the yard according to the project..

you still continue to impress, your recycling of materials and unique reapplications make this one of my favourites. Normally I only like small builds as the people building them are resourceful with space but you are adding something much more, Love. Thanks Andy :)

Even in the old workshop is being a little revolution, generated by the transformation of the old (and outrageous) 220V electrical system which was sustained over sheathed cables laid on the beams of the roof (damaged by mice and pigeons!) in a more rational and modern (fairly modern..) system with wires contained in metal or plastic conduit froming a robust three-phase backbone also boxed and channeled that will power a series of old and new equipment whose engines will return to rotate 380V...

First appreciable improvement, the adoption of four aluminum spotlight dangling from the top with a chain in which I've bolted a ceramic E27 lamp holder with a lamp in mixed light from 160Watt. To be clear is the type that power is an entirely similar to a glow and when it evaporates the mercury in the bulb filament itself acts as a starter and the emission becomes more intense and white. The energy saving is not his strong point but the bulbs are not expensive (about 7-8 euro against the 35 equivalent low power bulb) and the atmosphere old factory is assured..

The remaking of the electrical system has stimulated the re-organization of space and the re-location of some equipment. -In particular, the drill column that had been placed in a niche in which to drill long pieces appeared awkward or bulky, it is out in the open against a brick pillar that had to be cleared by the varied furniture that crowded it..

normal_DSCF4050.JPG

normal_DSCF4052.JPG

normal_DSCF4053.JPG

normal_DSCF4054.JPG

Of the two candidates for the vacant space, the nineteenth-century belt-driven drill was placed permanently at rest (even I'd be afraid to use such a dangerous device..) while the odd tool given to me by a friend few years ago took office after a nice degreased of it's surface that allows, inter alia, to formulate some hypotheses about what ti is exactly..

normal_DSCF4102.JPG

normal_DSCF4100.JPG

normal_DSCF4092.JPG

It 'a kind of multiple drill that I think would serve to produce "semi-automatically" serial-pieces in a way to come out every one more or less similar..

normal_DSCF4094.JPG

normal_DSCF4099.JPG

normal_DSCF4095.JPG

normal_DSCF4096.JPG

The alienated worker-automaton had only to push the lever down, pull out and reinsert a new element to pierce but what came out I'm afraid that he did not know..
