I was surfing CL around 6am yesterday morning and found an ad for an old set of SO cabinets about 10 miles from my house. The ad said make an offer. The ad had been up for a few hours and I figured he had some offers in already, but I gave it a try anyway. I offered $75. He emailed me back a few hours later saying he had an offer for $100 and if I could do $105 I could have them. I replied that I couldn’t do more than $75 and if they were still around tomorrow to let me know and I would come get them. I was debating whether to jump at the $105 but I just ordered a bunch of steel for some tables and I really couldn’t. A little while later he said come get ‘em. I was there in 15 minutes. Here is what I came home with:

I think they are from the early to mid 60’s. They need a fair amount of work but I am happy with the purchase. All the drawers work pretty well but need to be cleaned and lubed. No major dents on the sides or anything. There are no casters, but I will have some extras off of my 42” HF and craftsman 26” craftsman after I build the benches so hopefully I can use a set from there. I couldn’t find a number on the middle box. Any ideas? Any ideas on how to strip the paint. Should I use a paint striper or media blast?

Thanks guys. Not sure what I am going to do with them yet. For now I will use them for nuts/bolts storage since that is what I am in desperate need of. At some point I will clean them up. After that there may be a HF cab for sale.

I would media blast them. I sandblasted a Craftsman three drawer tool box that a friend found in the trash. I painted the main part of the box silver hammer finish and did the drawers in a purple metallic. (Purple is her favorite color).
I think the blasting leaves a slight texture that helps give the final finish a nice even look.

I would either zip strip it or soda blast it, gotta be careful with reg media blast as it could warp metal. great find have fun.

Very cool - what a score! As others are saying, keep us in the loop with what you do with the restoration on them.

What kind of media did you use? Glass? Did you warp the metal at all?

Warping the metal is my concern with blasting it. I thought about soda but I thought it was really hard to paint metal after soda blasting. Something about the not being able to get the residue off?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Two drawer mid = KR 420

Nuts and bolts storage, you're killin' me. Clean em' up and put some tools in em'.

Nice score!

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look it up on CollectingSnapOn. It looks like the other two peices date to the early to mid 60's. I bet the mid box will too. May have been purchased as a set of three.

I'm supprised no one else gave me a hard time about the nut/bolt comment :lol_hitti It will be temporary. I can't find a blot to save my life in my shop right now.

Nice! Don't forget to start a thread on their restoration; we all want to see them brought back to their former glory.

I will start a thread when I clean them up. It may be a while though. This project is behind three bench builds, three drill presses, a belt sander build, about 4 vises, and a few more things I can't remember right now. :eyecrazy:

Soda will leave a slight residue but there's alot of people around here that will have a vehicle soda blasted rather than sandblasted. One guy local will come to you place and blast stuff.
