Hey guys! Did a search, but didn't see as much as I expected. Maybe you guys can help me out.

we're planning a semi-substantial addition on to our existing garage, but have realized that the addition of a 2-bay carport would be extremely helpful for some additional parking coverage. However, when I said the word "carport" to my wife there was the look of "no way in hell" on her face. But then I explained that the solution would be a more permanent solution than just a pre-fab metal carport, or something similar.

I would like to build a carport that's a little more permanent. Timber frame or something like framed out with some nice mill work. Something with some good architectural value and that could be worked in with the style of our 30's brick home and surrounding landscape plan.

Post 'em up! Anything you guys have built or can share I would like to see.

Thanks!

Google "Porte-cochere" instead of carport.

BEAUTIFUL! And yeah, good thinking for a search. Only thing is, most Porte-cocheres are attached to the home/building instead of being a stand-alone structure, but did a quick search and found that some of the concepts for Porte-cocheres might work for a stand alone just as well! So GREAT thinking!

I've actually been trying to figure out how to incorporate a Porte-cochere into our home since we bought it because of the down-pours we have around here, but the layout of our home on the property is not conducive at all. ERR!

Something like this is a little bit over the top, detail wise, but is actually a really nice as far as complimenting the home's architecture, which I like.

Missed the timber-framed part. Here's a modest one you should be able to DIY in a weekend or two:

Hopefully your wife won't object.

Missed the timber-framed part.

Really doesn't HAVE to be timber, but I know there are a lot of great looking timber-framed carports that are real nice looking. I'm actually completely on the fence about rather or not it should timber. I really like some of the framed out and paneled ones that basically look like garages with no sides or doors. I could definitely see making something like that work.

I love the full on timber stuff, like the mountain resort above, however I'm afraid that's getting too "log cabin-ish". Which don't get me wrong, is amazing, just won't go to well with a red brick house and white picket fence. So that Porte-cochere above is probably closer to the direction I'm leaning with brick feet and some simple mill-work.

A larger version of this porte-cochere would be pretty complimentary to what we have going on around the property...

Try a search for "park shelters" for mostly timber framed stand alone ideas.

If you really want to convince the wife it's probably best to get an architect to draw something that is specifically designed to match your house design. It wouldnt be that expensive in the grand scheme of things...
