Clausing Drill Press

This is 3 phase, seller doesn't have 3 phase so I can't see it run. $700 is steep without seeing it run. Any idea what model this is?

EDIT: looks like a 20" 2276 with gear driven power feed

I wouldn't hesitate as long as everything turns freely. Even figuring in the cost of a VFD or a new motor you might be into it for under $1,100. And for that beauty would be a smoking deal.

If the seller responds I'll go have a look. The 640 lbs is going to be a challenge, time to call in some muscle.

That makes me so jealous. I would leverage the 3 phase to your benefit. I may suggest taking a look at the Reeves drive set up to make sure it’s all in working order. That added to the cost of my Clausing by a few hundred in machining and parts costs. - kind of cool seeing AP_Mech working on my stuff though!!

Clausing's are so nice, did the wife hook you up?

Drop the head down, pick it up with two guys, then just walk it into place.

Use one sling and lift the head of the drill from in front and behind the column with the middle of the sling over the fork, lower the head of the drill some if you need to get the height down.

Table cleaning, thinking about using these casters for a movable base?

I wouldn't...Have to make the base too big to not worry about flipping it when you hit something and stop suddenly. You've got probably 55% of the weight of the unit at the very top. If you need it mobile, then a metal pallet just big enough for a pallet jack to fit under it.

Nice score on the Clausing! I have a smaller one (15") of the same vintage (without the power feed) and it's given me great service in its second life for the past 20 years or so.

For a drill press vise, you can't go wrong with a Heinrich Grip-master. Not cheap new, but if you have the same luck in the used market, well worth it:

I've got a 4" model in the basement shop and a 6" in the garage/shop.

I have one of the Wahlstrom vises above and find most handy. Easy to move into position and then lock down. A lot easier to lock down that a vise that has ears and a bolt and nut.

I used to operate a (much cheaper) drill press on casters, got sick of them, took them off, never regretted it.
