I would love to see the broom machine working, If you ever want to do a video of it making brooms that would be great viewing.

Thanks. Keep up the good work...

Good work on the framing, you are moving along really well on this addition. Only comment on the paint booth dimensions would be that if you ever plan to paint a crew cab long bed you will want more than 24'. My truck as it sets right now is 22' including the bumpers. Otherwise I have nothing to add, great job, and have a safe and fun trip.

That's a great idea, and I'm all for it. Like the tutorial on sharpening drill bits I promised. I haven't forgotten that, but I don't seem to find the time. I'll put it on my to-do do-do list :willy_nil And, I've got to get making brooms for some fall shows I plan to go to.

Thanks for the comments. I really don't envision painting anything except tractors and old cars, but a little longer shouldn't hurt. I plan to use it for car storage when not in use so the doors can be open for storage. Not the best plan, but on limited space...

Back from my little excursion. Drove 1,100 miles to see Bobby and his Model A Garage.

Took my little 16 year old grandson along. Got off track and went up Stone Mountain, GA, on the way. I hadn't been there in 50 years. Things change.

Boy is 6'-3"

Got to Bobby's place, WOW:rocker:

What a guy, what a beautiful area, and the shop is exactly as advertised on GJ and more. He and his beautiful wife Ginny fixed supper for us, gave us a guest house for the night, and fixed breakfast. Great food:thumbup: Bobby is truly a Model A expert.

IMG_1728_zps1dppzjrl.jpg

Went by St. Sumpter on the way home.

IMG_1734_zpsrqdhutlg.jpg

Then drove through the Great Smokey Mountain National Park from Cherokee to Gatlinburg so the boy could see the beauty of eastern mountains. Dragging my trailer.

IMG_1738_zpsampmhgei.jpg

Stopped by Shiloh Military Park for some Civil War lessons

And headed for home.

Opened my trailer and Bobby had put his 1931 Model A Victoria in there!:rocker: What a guy!!:D Thanks, Bobby

GREAT trip!

Hot today. It was 63 degrees in the Smokey's yesterday.

Concrete cracked from the obvious corner. :willy_nil

I really don't mind.

IMG_1749_zpsqtwhmrkp.jpg

I did notice in an Applebee's restaurant on our trip that the concrete had cracked across the saw lines. Do they really work?:dunno:

Then started taking metal off the wall to be enclosed.

IMG_1750_zpsf6teflyu.jpg

Got that done and started laying out for joists when rain came so we went to town!

IMG_1755_zpsusmnpun5.jpg

Got Vicky in her temporary spot, though

IMG_1764_zpsooqmpf5z.jpg

After taking her around to meet some new folks, of course :)

And they say stuff just shows up to take up empty space:rocker::rocker:

(Glad I'm getting more empty space:thumbup:)

O, down here we have a Jeep add on TV, the father comes home with a new Jeep and parks in the driveway in front of the little tinnie with outboard motor and a trailer. His son looks a the jeep and then the tinnie and says to him "we are going to need a bigger boat". Well the way you are collecting, "your gunna need a bigger shed".
Great Model A.

Nice Vicky Andy.

Thanks! I've always liked them better than straight A's. (And I never ever had straight A's) Stop in anytime!

Gorgeous Model A!
Cheers!

Thanks for the comment! It's my new favorite car...

Andy I am stunned for words.

A Model A unreal..................

Thanks for stopping by, 1/2. Dragging it through the mountains I had to open the trailer regularly and check the tie downs. Surprised people when they saw what was in the trailer.

Appreciate the visit and comments. I was just thinking maybe I was building too small:willy_nil

It's getting to where the commercials are better than the shows over here.

Congrats on the A, that looks like a fun little cruiser. This weekend must have been the time to take your classics out, I saw probably 20 on a few different outings, all going different directions. So I decided it needed to get my cobra out and go pick up gummy worms for my girls. I thought it was a good excuse anyway.

Tried to warn you of the lure of the new, clean space! I can't throw any stones though. I filled up my space with one of my bucket list cars (1967 Mustang Fastback). I would have jumped all over that Vickie too!

It IS why we have the space!

Great to get the Cobra out! I took the Victoria around to visit a few friends, without a tag, of course. Nobody noticed. Went to town and got the tag today.:)

Today was cool but high humidity. Steady sweat running:eyecrazy:

Started by removing the rotted boards under the existing roof (due to a roof leak)

IMG_1767_zpsancply6t.jpg

Replaced the 2x6 and started laying out the first rafter. Fortunately trigonometry still works and the first rafter cut fit just right. Cut two more then got rained out. Went to town and got the tag for the Victoria and rain stopped when I got home.

Laid out the location of each rafter (5 ft centers) and each ceiling joist (24" centers) to make sure I'd have no interference. Then put up two more rafters. Three out of 13, that's about half done, isn't it?:dunno:

IMG_1770_zpsthbc40ql.jpg

Looks like they're parallel:thumbup:

Andy, I can't believe you got that from Bobby. I really can't believe it. I'll bet you had a fantastic trip with your "little" grandson. I also bet your visit with Bobby and Ginny was a real treat. I met Bobby last year. It wasn't a long enough encounter for me and I'm hoping to rectify that in the near future. The man is intelligent, cares about others, interesting to talk to and those are just a couple of his weak points. Nice score.

Glad you took a little time off from all the work you're doing on the shop which is moving along nicely by the way.

You've got Bobby pegged. He is a very interesting guy, lots of capabilities. And he has lots of Model A parts, stacks of axles, transmissions, engines, you name it.

And, he and Ginny are wonderful hosts. His Mustangs look better in person, as well! Thanks again Bobby and Ginny:bowdown:

I'm getting over the lack of progress while I was vacationing:willy_nil

Nice Vicky! Its going to be harder to get anything done with such a nice old A- ticker to drive around.:)

Fortunately it's been rainy here and I won't take it out in the rain. But it still looks good in the shop as I walk by it:bounce:

I'm eager to get it in it's new digs!

It was cool early today, but very humid. As it warmed up it was miserable.

Got the rest of the rafters cut by breakfast (wife likes to eat about 9:00)

IMG_1771_zpsoc7ivudl.jpg

We had rain overnight so the existing roof dripped all morning.:(

My portable scaffold made it easy to get the rafters up.

IMG_1772_zpsphh429sf.jpg

My SIL showed up and helped on the last few so all the rafters were up by lunch break, at 1:30. It would have gone faster but the trim on the existing building was really hard to get off. Ring shank nails which have been there close to thirty years. Two step: drive a small sharp nail bar under the head to lift it, then drive a wonder bar under it and twist hard. Only broke one head off, that's the easy way. I left the trim on where it did not interfere with the joist.

IMG_1773_zpsv6qy1brd.jpg

SIL came back for 3:00 to 5:00 and we got stringers up to support the right end of the ceiling joists, and marked them off for 2 ft centers. He was going to come back at 7:00 but we had a thunderstorm bearing down on us. I plugged away and got half the joists up between showers.

IMG_1774_zpspkmkua28.jpg

I'm wore out tonight.

Hope to get all the purlins up tomorrow. When SIL came over he thought he was going to hand up purlins. I decided I wanted to get the ceiling joists up and work off of OSB laid on the joists to put purlins up. Only a few years ago I would have worked off the purlins as I installed them, but a few years makes a difference, and I don't want a cramp to cause an eight or ten ft fall to concrete. Maybe some wisdom has come with age:) Maybe not :willy_nil

I made an inquiry for the metal yesterday and got a quote back this morning, from a metal building supply company. My local lumber yard used to be competitive but this quote beat them by a mile. Lumber yard is also ten days from order to receipt. Supply company promised metal to be available on this Friday, so if we get purlins on I should be able to get it the roof metal on Saturday and have some shade to work in.:bounce::bounce:

Andy, I stop by every time your thread shows a new post but I don't usually comment. It's good to hear that you think about that 10-foot fall to concrete more. I find myself taking more time to weigh the risks before I climb the ladder hands-free. Now I do little things to reduce the risk, like a tool belt or a strap to free my hand to hold on to the ladder.

To me you're making great progress so stay safe and take care of yourself.

Anyway, it will be getting mounted along with the one from Bob H, hopefully this weekend. I've just got to find a spot.

A house trailer was an immobilized mobile home or caravan I think it's called in Britain. They usually didn't move but the license plate was a way to make the owner pay an annual personal property tax on it. I don't think mobile homes have plates on them any more unless they are camper trailers that wander the roads. The term "house trailer" gave way to "mobile home" in the 1970's when some government standards were forced on the manufacturers.

So, I take it you don't refer to the SIL as "blister", .......shows up after the works done.
You are making good progress, I agree with putting up the OSB to work off. A lot safer.

Bob, I appreciate the safety comments. The time to heal has become greater than it used to be, and there's the chance of an injury that might inhibit more shop time:willy_nil Just don't go there!!

Cleaning up my shop, some stuff either goes into the trash or to unsuspecting friends:lol_hitti

I like easy questions. A house trailer was any house on wheels not intended to be regularly towed like a recreational trailer, which would have a simple "Trailer" tag. Later on, they were known as "Mobile Homes", a term coined as a sales tactic by manufacturers to sell to people who didn't want to live in a trailer. The State bought in on the ruse. Now they now market "Manufactured Housing", which is a house with axles under it so it can be moved to the home site. A house trailer was also where "trailer Trash" lived, like the 10 ft by 55 ft one I lived in during college (since I claim to have graduated in 1971, this would have been the tag off my University accommodations). Trailer Trash is a term of endearment given to those of lesser economic station by those who can make themselves feel superior by degrading others. We all know who the real trash is.

Around here, we have lot's of "oil field trash", known by high wages and questionable tastes, when oil is up. When oil is down, they're just people. Does that make it easier?

Now I have the addition pretty much in mind and it's coming together.

Thanks for visiting!!

Funny you should mention "blister", that's the SIL's name for me. Any dig is fair game between us. He was digging me just today over cracking the post with my Bobcat. Then had the gall to tell me he was going to rustle a calf to feed out for the great grandkids he is raising. "Well, shoot out my eye and call me Shorty!"

He's a funny guy and a big old Indian (feather not red dot), when he starts a long whopper, he'll often say "My forefathers, and three of my mothers,,,"

The humidity and rain just keeps coming.

Finished all the rafters and put all the purlins on today. Pretty good day, ready for roof metal.

IMG_1778_zpswz1s5nhg.jpg

Then it rained, so we moved inside and started decking the inside. Still have to put some backing boards up to pull the OSB straight and need to build an attic opening door (mainly for access to insulate)

IMG_1780_zpsxu5bliyv.jpg

After a heavy rain with more on the way, it was time to set back and admire our work. SIL worked hard all day today (great grandkids are in schools).

IMG_1781_zps674cgo0w.jpg

Metal should be ready Friday!! With any luck I'll have a roof over my head Saturday.:rocker::rocker:

Thanks for the funny reply (and to Cougar67 as well). And explanation.

I thought that's what it might have been. For some reason we don't have "Trailer Homes" down here. Just caravans :

and what I'm hoping to be one day - the "grey nomads", :

which is the collective name given to the herds of retiree's that move slowly (especially when they are on the road) around the country clogging up caravan parks and roads all over the country.....

Loving the amount of work you and the SIL are getting through on that shed too..... Keep up the great work.

Done well Andy..

Thanks, Mate!

:lol_hitti That's funny Andy, I'm glad that I wasn't taking a sip of coffee when I read it.

Glad you enjoyed it. Of course when he says it, it is so much better than printed, he says it in a very pompous way, in a low voice, and catches most people off guard. Thanks for taking time to comment!

So, do some people live full time in caravans? Desperate people do over here. I assume you have construction trailers companies move in for offices at job sites. They are built essentially like our old trailer homes were. Are all homes site built in Australia?

Hey Lyndon, I'm sure that you would have seen some in your travels...

View media item 63469
They do have wheels on them but require a wide-load permit to shift them (they are about 10' wide - a couple of feet wider than what is allowed on our roads).

They are not very common these days.

Yes, Grey Nomads live in their caravans while they tour the country, doing the famous "Big Lap" (which can be for 6 months, a year or ongoing indefinitely - until they slow down so much that they need a nursing home). I have heard of many people in their late 80's and 90's that live on the road like this. We have Caravan Parks all over the country, normally next to the beach. :pimpflash :pimpflash

Most of these parks also have cabins and powered and un-powered sites so they cater to campers (in tents), caravans and families that have neither but want a nice place to stay. :dunno:

And for building sites etc, we have "portable buildings", or what the Kiwis call "Dongers" . The company that I work for actually has an Engineering and Manufacturing side that makes these buildings for many companies in Sydney. http://multiquip.com.au/divisions/engineering/

And yes Mark they are normally oversize, so we either use our Tilt Tray or one of our low loaders to deliver them. They don't need permits any more, but the trucks must be marked up as "Oversize" loads, and have flags, signs and lights as per the HVNL (Heavy Vehicle National Law - NSW Schedules).

Lyndon

Hope that helps... :hellobye: :hellobye:

That is such a nice addition to your shop! I also love the ramp formed into the concrete under where the door is going to be. when I asked my concrete guys to do that on a pad I was pouring several years ago, they looked at me like I was nuts!

It will soon be another dry space you'll have to spend some QST!!!

Cheers!
