As usual great stuff coming out of your area Andy. I thought the Chevelle was a manual for some reason. Oh well I've been wrong many times before.

Hmmmmmmmmmm??

May have to go inspect the workmanship.

It's not what you think, Rian. Rumors are abounding but I have told GM flatly NO! I will not produce any aluminium engine blocks for them in the future.

Hoo Boy!

Not work if you enjoy yourself. [emoji3]

Well spoken. But enjoying work can be a tall order Shorty.

Miss Vicky looks very happy Andy!

Freshly cleaned with a strapping young man gently sliding his hands all over her. Probably happy.

Hmmm. I have a manual on it but not in it. Only a TH350. I had considered a 700R4 but don't really need the overdrive to smoke the tires.:lol_hitti

Andy, have you ever tried degassing your aluminum? I was on Youtube earlier today and saw this:

Basically a plunging tool is made. Then it's used to introduce soda crystals and then dross flux is sprinkled on top. It looks like it would improve the quality of the aluminum prior to casting. This is in reference to your earlier post about the voids in the material.

Your package arrived in the mail today. It was my personal QST Medallion. It was wonderful just the way it was delivered but it was a good day for some QST. A little filing, a little honing and some polishing and I have a medallion with a little of my own sweat in it. Thank you Gazza and Andy for making this happen and I hope no one is upset that I did this.

Also posted in the Thunderbird Garage first, I thought I'd post it here too.

I got a package today. I don't have the spot in the garage (shed) picked out yet. I wish I'd had a chance to get to know Mr. Church - 1/2 Cup better.

Thank you Andy.

Morning Andy,

These Arrived in St Louis yesterday

For @CraigRK and @djones1 and myself.

Thank you very much for forwarding these on to us.

I suspect Dennis may let us know where his is going to go.

Craig, who knows, he has such a variety of possible places to post it.

Me........?

Not sure yet, certainly indoors for starters, just to sit and enjoy, reflect, and talk about Steve’s legacy to anyone who will listen, there is always a chance to pay it forward in a life lesson for others.

Thanks again for the effort you are putting in for all of us.

On the main sparky panel in the shop office is a perfect spot.

Andy are you psychic by chance? Number on my QST is my favorite number and hammer is number with my birth day. Awesome.

I greatly admire myfordboy and his skills. Degassing aluminum with soda is however a questionable tactic. Moisture in the soda crystals can apparently do more harm than good. Dr. Campbell does not recommend degassing with anything, just avoiding the source of gas in the molten metal to begin with.

With the modern pouring basin design and a few other practices I have been able to pour very clean castings even starting with porosity filled ingots.

You asked.:lol_hitti

Andrew and my recommendation is for each person to post their memories of Steve on his thread, and posting pictures of stickers or medallions in your own shed, shop, or sgarage is one way to do that and helps others see how many people around the world have been touched by our remarkable friend Stephen 1/2Cup Church.

Also posted in the Thunderbird Garage first, I thought I'd post it here too.

Thanks for posting!! Hopefully you can find time to post on A Shed Downunder as well.

Andy
With all that work you are doing around your place It's a good thing it's not hot there :lol_hitti

Thanks Don, it's not been either hot or humid here so far this summer. But we are having problems with the pigs roosting on the power lines and making a mess.

Since you get motivation from the QST emblem I'd say you are demonstrating being supplied by more than one source of power.

I don't think I'm psychic, but professionals have told me I'm borderline psychotic. Hopefully I'm an overachiever and have left that obnoxious "borderline" label far behind.

I'm guessing you have a new favorite number and have applied to change your birth certificate.

Yes, Andy, I did. My understanding of casting aluminum is very limited. I did do some in metal shop in high school, but that was 44 years ago. :lol_hitti And my ego is not so fragile that I get upset if I find out I'm wrong. :) It happens often enough, once or twice more a day won't make any difference.

Although, I may bring some soda crystals and flux with me when I visit. :D

Thanks for posting!! Hopefully you can find time to post on A Shed Downunder as well.

I have to admit to a certain uncertainty regarding the posting in A Shed Downunder. I think I have an incomplete understanding of the nuances of thread participation, thread hijacking, thread ownership and the proper way to honor the memory of the fine Mr. Church. So I erred to the side of caution. Discretion is the better part of valor and all that. Somebody may have to get the crayons out and draw me a picture, because I don't get it.

Thank you, Andy, for putting up with the silly questions from a neighbor and for showing us all the cool stuff you do.

Roosting or roasting? If the later, that mess might be tasty. Reminds me of when a venerable old lobster company went up in flames here a few years back. The news anchors decried all the lobsters that burned. Did nobody think that with all the water courtesy of the fire department, some of them might have been boiled to tasty perfection? I wonder if any spectators showed up with a bib, nutcracker, and tub of butter--you know, just in case.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful QST cast aluminum emblem in the post office box today. Photo to follow...

No, you weren't wrong, myfordboy posts some great stuff this just happens to be one detail where it seems the consensus varies and I've taken the low road.

Yes, I'm confused too, and it has made me very unhappy. Sorry to contribute to confusion.

Umm, they were roosting, since they must have started flying if it's not hot and humid in Oklahoma in July.

I just received #s 32 and 33 thank you
the box arrived just in time and didn't have an amazon sticker on it either.
I'll be leaving for a short vacation in the morning but when I get home I'm going to play with the medallion a bit before I put it on a cabinet.

I assume you're talking about the guidance about not posting sticker and medallion pics on 1/2 Cups thread.

I don't want to upset anybody, but I'm still confused. Andrew seemed pretty clear that he wanted everything posted on A Shed Downunder, as that's the only place Steve's family know to look, but it's still unclear to me what rules are/were being broken by doing so.

I was excited to see a care package from Oklahoma in my mailbox yesterday when I got home from work. Inside I found two custom items and couldn't be more proud to have and display them. I have decided to display the Quality Shed Time emblem in Shortykorte fashion at least for now. It seemed to be the most fitting place considering Steve's profession. My "sparky box" is in the corner of my workroom, and is in a place that it does not get covered up, so I should see it there every day. I am currently reading through the A Shed Downunder thread, and am 180ish pages in. I now fully understand why Steve was so deeply respected, and am gleaning many ideas to implement into my own shop from his work.
IMG_20190717_164427.jpg
In honor and memory of Steve, I will implement his signature line from this point forward: Corporate Policy in the Shed Downunder on my weekly To Do List from now on and that is " include at least one trivial job on that list every week" . I started that implementation yesterday with two trivial tasks. The first was to sweep my workbench and oil it down. I put a considerable amount of work into it about a month ago by stripping all the paint and removing all the rust. I used cold blue to give it a little protection and a nice patina. A weekly oiling should protect that finish and preserve it in Steve's memory. I will think of him each time I do it from this point forward.
IMG_20190717_203959.jpg
The second trivial task was to apply a finish to my hammer rack. Back when I asked for one of your beautiful custom aluminum hammers, I promised that I would reserve a space for it on my hammer rack, and post a picture of it there when it was received. I had thrown the rack together months ago, and never taken the time to sand it and apply a finish. Perfectly functional in its' previous state...but looks much nicer now that it has a coat of Watco Danish oil. The package came with a hand written note stating that I had the honor of receiving the only custom hammer with this characteristic. I will see if another member is perceptive enough to pick up on that custom feature....
IMG_20190717_203941.jpg
THANK YOU ANDY!! I appreciate your time and thoughtfulness that you are willing to share with your fellow GJ brotherhood. I hope that I will do both of them justice with their space occupied in Slim's Barn with a Room. They will be displayed and used with pride for years to come.

I would like to post a picture of the emblem in its spot on Steve's thread, but I will wait until the moderators and Andrew make a clear decision on that. I do not wish to upset the apple cart, so to speak. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness. I hope that I can repay it in some small way someday.
P.S.- I also wiped down and oiled my hammers yesterday, so that makes three trivial tasks completed for the week. If that isn't considered "trivial tool polishing" in true GJ fashion, I don't know what is!!

Welcome to the exclusive club of those who understand what Stephen Church stood for. There are still some around who just don't get it.

Your shed time will be better for it.

And therefore your life.

Second day cleaning up for expanding my shop, this was a long day but I got the shed cleaned out and ready to start leveling and shooting levels to see where I stand on fill required for my new floor.

I'm going to have to leave my compressor and old compressor in place until they need to go to pour the floor. I guess I'll have to go with a portable compressor for a while.

Got the tractors moved away from the front of the shop where I plan on putting two overhead doors.

attachment.php

Cleaning out I found four old Firebird wheels I've had for years.

So is there any value to these? I advertised them years ago and had no interest. I hate to scrap them.

Do you have anymore of the slot mags? Do you happen to know siezes/bolt patterns?

I've just finished reading this wonderful book, which has helped (?) me quite a lot in that area.

Please excuse the title, it really is a very good book...

If you want a casting or sticker please do so in the topics related to ordering them.

If you want to post how you have mounted or placed a sticker to honor our mate 1/2Cup then please do so in his Shed Down Under topic.

I have tried to get the message across a couple of times and I am asking this again please and that you respect what has been asked.

I have moved and I have deleted posts and I will continue to do so and I know some of you are not happy.

OK, this is totally different than what we have been told. Several people have removed their post showing where they had mounted their sticker or casting because of misinformation.

Hopefully we can all honor 1/2Cup on A Shed Downunder without fear of retribution.

"If you want to post how you have mounted or placed a sticker to honor our mate 1/2Cup then please do so in his Shed Down Under topic. "

This is compared to the instructions on A Shed Downunder:

These seem to be very contradicting instructions and have caused removal of posts intended to honor Stephen Church.

I thought English was my first language.

The "request" is confusing and not internally consistent--no wonder people aren't sure what to do!

I've just finished reading this wonderful book, which has helped (?) me quite a lot in that area.

Please excuse the title, it really is a very good book...

I may have to read that.

Anyone can always email me at [email protected]

Interestingly although I have posted that email address for some time now I have received no spam messages there. Just a matter of time, I'm sure.

Thanks Andy much appreciated kind sir.I explained to my wife what the significance was about the package I received. She thought it was very nice for us guys to band together and honor or GJ brother from down under.:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks, Bug! Drop by on your next trip to Tulsa. Free Cokes!

These seem to be very contradicting instructions and have caused removal of posts intended to honor Stephen Church.

I have restored many posts that honor Steve and I have removed posts requesting to order both stickers and castings.

The "request" is confusing and not internally consistent--no wonder people aren't sure what to do!

I am trying very hard here to clarify. Anything as to how you honor Steve with a casting or sticker should be posted in the Topic Shed Down Under.

Any one wanting to post thanks to the creators of the stickers and castings should do so in either the Free Parking topic or Andys Topic.

What I am trying to do is remove non essential posts not related to the topic that Andrew should have control over.

Again this was a request made to me so the Shed Down Under Topic remains respectful.

I do believe now many may see why 1/2 and I worked well as a team he was far better and pointing out and making issues clearer than I can :(

Thanks for clarifying Simon, it has obviously been a point of confusion for many people.

So any comments honouring Steve including pictures of interesting placement of stickers and medallions are OK to go on Steve/Andrew's thread.

Anything related to requesting, ordering, general logistics or comments/discussion just related to the stickers/medallions (including hospice donations?) are to stay on the relevant Andy/Gazza threads.

Is that right?

Thank you for repeating and helping me to get the point across.
Yes correct. Keeping the logistics seperate is a good way to put it.

Do you have anymore of the slot mags? Do you happen to know siezes/bolt patterns?

I have those four Firebird mags.

The "request" is confusing and not internally consistent--no wonder people aren't sure what to do!

And it has changed for the better, even restored posts so I think we are moving in the right direction.

A young friend borrowed my 479 Haybine. That's a hay mower conditioner. He needed to to it 50 miles on the highway so I moved it up to the shop

One tire had several years left in it.

Having the tire machine is so nice. I have broken many down by hand. I just never pay someone else to do what I can.

I had bought the new tire in June of 2015. Thought it was time to install it.

Why I took off a good tire? He had three little kids with him.

Two years old and flying a kite. I'm not holding the string, just circling it so I can catch it if she let go. She never did.

In other news, the replacement transmission came in undamaged and we installed it today. So it is Miss Vicky's turn on the lift. I think her flywheel may be loose so we're going to pull the transmission.

Thanks for stopping in!

Thanks! The thread has wandered a bit, I'm afraid. Thanks for commenting!

In other news, my Zumba Instructor/CPA/Good Friend finally got back to finish her dressing table and chair. The dressing table I had made the long reach clamp to glue loose veneer. Didn't get a picture of it but she was really please with the repairs I had made that she didn't ask for.

Chair had been fully disassembled, broken spindles and a leg repaired, then assembled and painted. Last was putting the caning in. It's easy.

I am very impressed when you say that caning is easy. Easy for a master craftsman, I suppose. In my experience it is hard to do. Your chair looks great.

How much time did it take to swap in the replacement transmission? Do you have a transmission jack?

That's what I thought at first. But this type of caning is ready made in sheets. Cut to size and drive in the pegs. I am oversimplifying of course, but basically that's it. I have a caning job to do and the owner wants traditional caning. I might hire that job out.

I learned something today - that there are sheets of pre-made cane. My only experience was from many years ago when I helped my mom cane the seat on a ladder back chair. It was very tough to do, and it still turned out a poor job. :)

As Andrew observes, this is prewoven sheet caning. A spline holds it in the groove. You work around the presoaked sheet with wedges to press the fabric into the slot then drive the spline in. Weaving in place through holes is tedious, as is weaving a ladderback chair seat around the runners.

About four hours over a couple of days to swap the transmission. With a four post lift and transmission jack. I bought the expensive HF one last year and had only loaned it out until this job. Worked fine.

Interestingly, these chairs were made with the sheet caning, so they were around 1890's or later. Then at some point someone drilled holes all around and hand caned them. I dug the newer old style caning out and put in the original newer style caning in which would have been original to the chairs.

Now that she knows we can do it (we) she has some more chairs to do and a bench for a friend.:lol_hitti

On a ladder back chair I would expect that to be woven and not caned. Did you use paper, hickory, or do you remember the material. My ladderback chairs I bought new in 1971 in Knoxville at Sears have paper seats and two of the four need work. They are factory made but have very traditional joinery and materials (poplar uprights with oak rungs, green uprights shrunk onto dry oak rungs. They are very solid after 50 years of abuse). My plan is to cut a hickory and strip the cambium to make traditional ladder back chair seats.

So the message finally got through with what I had been requested to do.

Glad you figured it out, there was some confusion along the way.:lol_hitti
