Mamatus clouds and a big caboose. Only on this thread. :lol_hitti

Castings came out great and the Chevy looks awesome.

Rose of Sharon is putting on a spectacular show too. Cannot believe that it has been a year already Andy! My thoughts are with you.

I am sure Andy will be around in a week or two to do a full write up.

And hopefully I am not stealing all of his thunder.

On the move again......

Yup.......

It’s another random road trip.

Burning off some fossils again, making sense of the chaos out there.

Eastbound it appears. Looks like a fun time Andy. If you make it southeast a bit more, give me a warning and I'll do my best to offer some Iowa hospitality.

Andy, mom and dad would be so pleased. Taking that first trip to the West Coast in 1955, followed by the trip to the east side of the Rockies in 1956 should bring back lots of memories.

Back home from the Andy Martin Experience. What a great time and super host. First up was a tour of the caboose. IMG_1790.jpg very cool being up in the Coppola.
Next up, a ride in the Show Truck. IMG_1860.jpg
Hershey didn’t join but Spot did.
Then it was the shop tour....or playground wonder world. I got to learn how to cast. IMG_1740.jpgIMG_1861.jpgIMG_1862.jpg
For some reason Andy wouldn’t let me get close even with my Florida Safety Shoes on.

While getting a tour of the farm in the show truck, Andy bequeathed me with one of his many prized possessions. Maybe if you all visit, you might get a prize too.

After lunch it was time to see the brass castings we’d poured. IMG_1765.jpg
Definitely will treasure these. Vicki absolutely loves the Hope cross. Thank you.

Next activity was learning lost foam casting. IMG_1753.jpg since Andy provided me with wire, I look forward to making a foam cutter.
We placed the patterns in sand, melted some aluminum and produced these. Round disc will be a tire charger hold down. On the left, part of the bracket for my bandsaw fence and last, a desk ornament. IMG_1770.jpg

I was driving the Chevelle. Great to be behind the wheel of a A body muscle car. Andy was in the Model A and a friend of his drove the 37 Chevy.

Hi. CNC_Rick here. I've been a member for a few years. I've followed your antics from the start. You remind me so much of my Dad. He could fix anything, just like you. Ive responded on JBMATT's page, too. I do own a Farmall M... and 7 John Deeres... and an Allis Chalmers B... just like the one you have, but not quite as nice as yours. a couple dozers...

All my tractors are so pristine!

Thanks for your kind words. there's not much I won't try to fix, my success rate, however, suffers. I did fix a fuel pump on a 216 Chevy the other day.:bounce:

So glad we got to visit with you and Sharon the week before she died Andy.

She was a gentle soul.

Good to see the dogs keeping you on track too.

Boxes are good......:)

Thanks for stopping in, Rian.

Good to see you back Andy. Nice work. Maybe now I will have more motivation to create. I am creating space though. Got a guy who wanted the Texaco gas pump but was surprised when I would not let him take it while leaving me a check; which he informs me of after I spent several hours removing it. Now it's occupying the space i just made in my barn. :dunno:

Hi Bobby!

Did the pump actually sell?

The Cabinets look good, Andy. Nice work.

Thanks!

A difficult day but a good day for a walk with the pooches and seeing the beauty in life.

Did they drive the Chevy to the levy?

Sent from my iPhone using Garage Journal

Yes...

Yeah, but the levy was dry.

How did you know?

Was some good ol' boys drinking whisky and rye?

I'd imagine. This all has a familiar ring but I can't remember, maybe Don does.

Hey Andy, so good to see you posting some again.

It felt good too, til I fell off the wagon again.

Mamatus clouds and a big caboose. Only on this thread. :lol_hitti

Time, however, has crept for me.

Glad you’re back, Andy. Anniversaries are often difficult, but help keep the good memories alive.

Nice job on the cabinet boxes!

Thank you. Cabinets were fun!

Burning off some fossils again, making sense of the chaos out there.

When I get around to posting pictures again. Seems I've been too busy for my own good. The Grubhouse is in Yale Oklahoma. Very good place to eat.

The old fort is Bent's Fort. The last English trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. It's in SE Colorado and very nicely restored by the U. S. Park Service.

And I woke to Cheyenne, Wyoming today.

Few things as beautiful as a clear blue sky.

Thanks for posting, Rian! The Union Pacific train station in Cheyenne is great architecture.

Good for you Andy. Looks like beautiful weather.

Sent from my iPhone using Garage Journal

For late September and early October we had great weather all the way to Idaho and Washington.

More from today.

And to close out.

Wyoming is great.

I have to agree. The old stone culvert was a random find. It has been added to but they took pains to leave the original intact. Unusual for a railroad trying to make money.

The last picture is a recreation of my avatar. same location, different car. Har har.

It was all fun! And quite Presidential.

Looks like you are having a blast Andy, some great sites to see in that area of the country.

JB

Absolutely, and wide open spaces!

Eastbound it appears. Looks like a fun time Andy. If you make it southeast a bit more, give me a warning and I'll do my best to offer some Iowa hospitality.

Did not make it all the way to Iowa. Maybe soon!

Andy, mom and dad would be so pleased. Taking that first trip to the West Coast in 1955, followed by the trip to the east side of the Rockies in 1956 should bring back lots of memories.

Like I don't remember! Except I remember it being 1959. :dunno:

Looks like you guys are having fun.

Yes sir!

So Andy, we heard you have a helper?

Bet he’s not wearing safety shoes!!😜😜😜

I had a helper, but he quit me. Not much staying power.

Figure the rest yourselves.

Been tractors, dogs and diggers the last few days

It was great having Shorty here. He made me feel normal...

Who’s the guy in the pants??

Looks like a booster is needed for the vise so he don’t have to bend over so much.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

He tried to wear shorts.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Is he safe to use technical equipment like a vise? I don't know if he will damage the vise or himself. [emoji38][emoji38]

Surprisingly there were no injuries, but he did try a couple of times.

Not sure who he is, but he looks like a nice guy.

Real nice report of your great trip.
Thanks for sharing

You should wander over sometime Vince.

Special trip for you Shorty. There aren't a lot of Andy's left to learn from.

Thanks for the kind words, but watch what you learn.:bounce:

What a PRIVILEGE to spend time with Andy, and then dogs, making stuff.

I love those imperfect perfect castings best.

Glad you had a good time

Sounds like a great day!

Don't look too closely at the hold down, the porosity could burn your eyes out!

It looks like you had a great time and wonderful teacher. I'll admit, I'm a little jealous.

We had a great time, I learned a lot from Shorty. Especially about my belt sander.

Great trip, Shorty. Kudos to you for the great recap and to Andy for being such a good host.

Shorty does make a nice writeup!

Andy,

Great to see you enjoying life & sharing it with others. I miss the regular posts but understand if they get in the way of having fun. I’ll hold tight for the cliff notes. -=Mike

:bounce: I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, I just can't seem to get up to date. And that trip was 7,500 miles in 19 days. Nonstop fun.

It was a great time. Highly recommended.

Back to the cabinets. Total there were seven cabinets to build. They went together pretty quickly.

Kitchen sink and drawers:

attachment.php

A coffee bar. The hutch gets shelves and doors but will sit on top of a countertop over the base:

attachment.php

A small wall cabinet which goes over the stove:

attachment.php

And a refrigerator cabinet. It is lying down on the left side. the L will go over the top of the refrigerator. There is a large door on the left side (lying on the floor) which will provide some pantry space in the kitchen.

attachment.php

The other two pieces are simple base units. At least it's progress. Pictures are from May of 2020.

Around the same time we were working on the 32 Chevy coupe. We are my new friend Mike and myself. The 32 was owned by an acquaintance of his. The new six cylinder came to us with no carburetor but a nice four barrel manifold. Since we were using the 1932 rear axle we were discussing how to limit horsepower to protect the axle. We did have the Carter W-1 from 1932 which was working well so we decided to adapt the old carburetor to the new engine. Kind of a restrictor plate by carburetor.

I had a willing helper in the foundry.

attachment.php

Seemed like a good lost foam application. Pattern:

attachment.php

The bottom feeds the two outside ports:

attachment.php

The top has a flange to match the Carter W-1:

attachment.php

It's always good to be heating metal. The pattern (coated in thin drywall mud) is buried in compacted loose sand in the bucket. The pattern has to be tilted so the sand will fill all of the internal cavities. I think of it like the sand has to be able to "drain upward" and fill all spaces. If there is a space where air is trapped and the sand can't flow into it then aluminum will occupy the air space. Ready to go:
