I'm HVLP spraying some metal that I'd like to clear coat. I've painted with an oil based paint.

Can you guys recommended an oil based clear coat? Preferably one thats a matte / flat sheen.

What brand paint did you use ? Can you see if they offer a clear ? Seen and heard of a lot of problems lately mixing brands and types of paint for base and clear coats. What ever you decide to use make sure to do a test piece first. Paint a test piece now so it will have plenty of dry time before the clear test.

Rustoleum oil based enamel. I’ve found a Rustoleum CC gloss. But nothing lower in sheen.

Good tip! Thank you.

Have never used oil base clear before, but I'd go talk to a auto body paint suply store. They'll have a product called flatner. You add it to the clear, the more you add the flatter it gets. I just don't know if it would be compatible with oil based clear.

What do you want a clear coat for? The more film thickness you apply to a paint job the greater the chance of a failure.

An internal roof ladder that’s about 14’. I’ve already sprayed it with rustoleum oil based enamel.

And my Jeep wranglers rims. Haven’t painted the rims yet.

I meant why do you feel the need to put a clear coat on? Enamels are designed as single stage products.

Rattle can auto touch-up paint. Nice hard finish. Get clear.

Good question. I was talking to a friend about spraying my rims. He felt if I'm going to spend the time to remove the rust, mask the rims and spray them, why not throw on some clear coat to protect the paint from chipping.

Painting metal is all new to me.
