Another bike will come along.

When it comes to heat we are neighbors. Been helping my BIL by doing a bit of electrical work on one of his jobs. Had to go up in the attic several times. That meant getting up early to beat the heat. After 8 am it was to hot to go up. Watch yourself. Keep yourself hydrated and listen to your body. When it says no it is time to put the tools up.

We got one side of the roof done yesterday.
While we were eating dinner a storm came up and although it was weighted down with lumber, my insulation pile ended up broken and in my neighbors yard. So, instead of putting on the other half of the roof tomorrow, I get to hunt down some insulation.

Mate, call me Steptoe, but grab some expanding foam and glue the big bits together when you get them up, then use the smaller pieces above the doors. Just an idea!

Thanks for the tip!

I salvaged the big pieces and I'll use all I can. I picked up some more yesterday and after I finish celebrating the birthday of America.. It's back to work on the roof tomorrow!

Still battling heat and little help but I am slowly making progress.
Had one piece of roof tin get damaged in a storm and bent another so I came up 2 sheets short and had to order them before I can finish the roof.

Bad luck on the wind damage, happens to the pro's all the time, you did a great job on the overhangs.

Just a 3:00 am reminder... Buckle down everything on your worksite every night whether you think it is going to storm or not. I don't think I lost anything this time but I wont know until I see it in the daylight. Luckily my wife was still up when the storm hit and heard the ladder blow over. We saved some metal from ending up at the neighbors.

Nothing like chasing building materials through the country side in the middle of the night.

I've been following this on and off for awhile and its looking great. Today rereading it came to me that it looks like the trusses are not setting on any strengthened footer area. Are they just bolted to the flat slab or has the slab been thickened on the edge?

Thanks Larry!

It is a monolithic pour, but there is a pier/footing poured under each location that the trusses sit. I drilled down to undisturbed clay at each location. At the shallow end they are a couple of feet deep. At the thick end I drilled completely through the new elevated pad to undisturbed clay underneath.

The heat has really slowed down progress the last few weeks but I am slowly getting there. Here are a few updated pics.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. And bit by bit, you get a little closer to the finish line. Nice work, I'm impressed by your approach and resourcefulness. It looks like it's going to be a great space!

I had planned on covering the inside with OSB.. But honestly, I am so anxious to get done and move in that I may just leave the interior walls the way they are. I plan on covering one side with storage anyway. I am in the process of trying to figure this out. I'm really not sure how it will end up.

Nterry57 your building is looking good! I just joined the journal today to ask questions about building my 40x40 chicken shed, another member mentioned this post. I noticed your X bracing is on the top of the trusses. Did you just do four? 2 on each end? And I am on the fence about using 2x6s or 2x4s for the building. I have the old 2x4s that are in great shape de-nailed and cleaned but unsure if I should switch to 6's for more strength. Suggestions?

Hey man! Great to hear! I don't know why more folks don't use these.

I have 8 X braces 4 on each end (2 on each side between the end trusses).

I also considered buying 2x6's for purlins but I saved my money and used the supplied 2x4's. I figured that's what the original builder used so it was good enough.

Are you using the 1.5" board insulation?
I did use it and the insulation in the ceiling expands when the sun gets high and pops and cracks. Drives me crazy. I do have a black roof and it may not be so bad with a different color but I am wishing I had insulated the roof with something else. The walls are fine.

Re: Cluck Cluck Save a Buck 40x40 DIY Garage

I didn't get insulation with my building unfortunately. Planning on spraying it after a few years. I might buy new 2x4s for the perlins and use the old for the girts I think that will be plenty solid. If you could snap some pictures for me Id greatly appreciate it. I'll send you my number! Thank you!

This is a neat build. The "chickens are short" comment got me to chuckle. I don't know if it was mentioned but what's the plan for electrical?

I will be installing a 200 amp service. I'll need power for a welder AND a big compressor.

I happened to be at a local Casey's store when they were swapping out all of their lighting for LED. I asked one of the workers what they were going to do with the old lights. (The store is only about 6 years old) He said "why you want 'em?" I said"YEP"... So I ended up with 20 T12 fixtures and 3 boxes of bulbs. SCORE! I will be installing all 20 and plug ins everywhere!

Finally completely done with the exterior! It's been a long journey. Now I'm trying to get the doors up and start on the electrical. And she needs a bath really bad!
