Says he.

So I say "Prove it, that size is lifetime isn't it?"

He proceeds to dig out of his tool box a spare lonely flarenut wrench and does this

:lol_hitti

Speed holes I guess?

That's quite impressive.

And of course he put the hole in the wrench exactly where the size marking is.

I know right? I gave him **** about that and he said "Hey I'll put another hole wherever you want on the wrench" but I was like no please stop drilling holes in wrenches
And clearly edited the video to make it shorter/1 min long too

I saw those on the truck today. I'd be interested to try them, but I have a hard time swallowing $260 for a set of drills. Lifetime or not.

I can see them being real handy for enlarging existing holes.

I didn't recognize Maxtop so I googled it....looks like an aliexpress china wrench. Make him do it to a Matco wrench to prove its really tough. (double dog dare him)

That's how I feel, all of the drill bits are pricey, i usually just say buy them from Irwin. But I havent seen these from Irwin yet

Yeah he got a mixed set at a garage sale, haha I'll tell him that. Although i think he just has Matco/Silver Eagle wrenches.

Looks like sharpening those drills would be fun, just as well they are lifetime warranty (till they stop selling them so you get an ordinary non warranty HSS drill as a replacement).

I imagine now that Irwin is owned by Stanley which owns Mac and others, likely not Irwin for this new set from Matco.
I deal a lot in drill bits and industrial supply and haven't seen these at all. There must be a patent or the like. Also gotta be China I would think, nothing new coming out of the states in the last decade regarding drills bits outside of coatings and "hey we use a special alloy which is like totally different"

I couldn't find any drill patents assigned to Matco Tools Inc. or Fortive (Danaher Corp). I'm guessing they've licensed the idea from someone else, yet to be identified.

They are exclusive to Matco for an undisclosed amount of time.

But I read on Garage Journal everything from Matco can be bought from another brand way cheaper. Must be a glitch in the Matrix

This is true to a scary degree. Like, hundreds of dollars cheaper sometimes.

Matco only makes toolboxes. Someone else makes these drills, but it sure ain't Matco. They will be available for way less as soon as the contract us up.

What makes these different from Mac's made in China drill bits? If I were to buy drill bits off the truck, I'll take Snap on's rebranded Made in USA thunderbits.

Lifetime only down to 1/4. Smaller are consumable. This is pretty standard.

DeWalt has had something similar for awhile in their pilot point bits. Its a good idea but whats most important to me is how long they remain sharp. Drill a few stainless bolts or something case hardened then go through some tool steel and i'll be impressed.

I don't know why but this smells of AstroPneumatic to me.

edit-saw someone else had a similar spidey sense tingling in the AP thread.

They look to me like non sharpenable drills marketed to people who don't know how to drill holes in metal. The dunce in the video doesn't even have the sense to use cutting oil.

You would be amazed at what you can drill with a good HSS 118 degree drill. That includes grade 8 bolts, 300 series stainless, AR plate, and lots of hard alloys. But first you must drill some holes. Get some 3/8" mild steel, a good center punch, a few industrial quality 5/16 HSS 118 drills and some real cutting oil. Sit down at your drill press and poke a few hundred holes. Go with an 1/8" pilot hole and without. You will learn more in a few hours than years of internet ******** will teach you. If you don't have a drill press, do it the hard way.

Whether or not you use some type of magic drills, you will never be proficient without experience.

Mechanics don't use drill presses nor are these marketed towards machinists.

I have snap on drillbits and they are utter pieces of ****. I now own Irwin and use the snap on set as a loaner kit. They dull so quickly or just break immediately

While I agree with everything you said, i will argue these may have a place in maintenance and repair, especially with enlarging existing holes.

When enlarging a hole, the majority of cutting force is focused on the outside edges of the drill flutes and not on the chisel edge. This usually results in a aggressive self feed and a chipped drill.

A sheet metal step drill's geometry is designed to enlarge holes and not break, but they are very limited to depth of cut unless you can go to the major OD of the drill.

These Matco bits look to be a blend between the two. I think these would be a good way to drill out existing holes or drill a larger hole out of position with no pilot.

I wouldn't want these in the machine shop. But they may be a good solution for maintenance and repair.

And $260 is ridiculous. That's just price gouging.

A drill press can be a great teaching tool. The principals are the same whether you drill on a machine tool, a cheap drill press, a hand held electric drill or a bit and brace. Most mechanics I know drill because they have to, and only when they have to. Some of them manage to get good at it, more of them do not.

In 43 years I've worked in the shop and in the field, on bright shiny things and nasty old junk. I've drilled more holes in more materials than most people. I'm not the world's leading expert, but over the years I've taught lots of people lots of things, just as I was taught when I didn't know how. It's a fundamental element among tradesmen.

If you don't like my opinions or advice, that's cool. Thanks for stating the obvious.

Good points all around, Doc. Everything and anything works in one situation or another. I work in a fairly high end, high tech shop. A few months ago, I poked a few holes with a 3 1/2" hole saw. It was really the best way to do what had to be done in the situation.

I can see these in maintenance and repair, that's where I started out, but they would be way down on my list of priorities. My point is, if you don't have the fundamental skills, trick tools aren't much help.

Interesting statement about not knowing how to drill holes in metal. I know my eye sight isn't the greatest but at the end of the short video there were in fact many holes in metal. Work smarter not harder.

Would they be good for broken exhaust manifold bolts in heads, like to see how they work on that?

Interesting design, a step drill incorporated in a normal drill bit. Good for thinner materials I would say. But sharpening would be out of the question since I have no idea how to sharpen a step drill.

That's mainly why he got them, his other Cobalt drills sorta chuncked things up when attempted. So we'll see

TurboMax is the same way, can't sharpen really. But seems a lot of people use them.

I would hope that's part of the lifetime warranty. When the bit won't cut anymore you just swap it out the next time the truck stops at your shop.

Seriously, though, I could have sworn that I saw a post a while back by Astro talking about some new drill bits or something that they had coming out, but would be exclusively available from one of their partners for a while.

I would not be surprised in the least to find out that they're these. Hopefully, the exclusivity agreement runs out in a short period, and Astro can offer these direct for significantly cheaper (likely, sans the Matco warranty).

Sure but at what expense for the "correct equipment". That's how they were made in the first place. How much will that cost? Do you have the correct equipment? For the home diy type I can see these as "disposable" when they stop cutting good.

Almost everything can, unless there is an exclusivity clause.

MOST of the stuff is rebrands. A few things like the KABO wrenches, non-slip impacts, and these bits are not, and (for now) exclusive. Often even if you can find the manufacturer, they don't deal directly with the public anyways.
