They look to me like non sharpenable drills marketed to people who don't know how to drill holes in metal. The dunce in the video doesn't even have the sense to use cutting oil.

You would be amazed at what you can drill with a good HSS 118 degree drill. That includes grade 8 bolts, 300 series stainless, AR plate, and lots of hard alloys. But first you must drill some holes. Get some 3/8" mild steel, a good center punch, a few industrial quality 5/16 HSS 118 drills and some real cutting oil. Sit down at your drill press and poke a few hundred holes. Go with an 1/8" pilot hole and without. You will learn more in a few hours than years of internet ******** will teach you. If you don't have a drill press, do it the hard way.

Whether or not you use some type of magic drills, you will never be proficient without experience.
That thought occurred to me as well. I wonder what the warranty is, do they give you a new drill bit when it gets dull?

I guess every machinist I've ever worked with was a "dunce" then:lol_hitti

Sure but at what expense for the "correct equipment". That's how they were made in the first place. How much will that cost? Do you have the correct equipment? For the home diy type I can see these as "disposable" when they stop cutting good.

The question wasn't whether it was affordable or "DIY" or anything like that. It was "can these be sharpened?" and I don't see any reason you can't send these to a sharpening shop and get them sharpened, along with pretty much any other cutting tool. Nobody barks when they have to send out a router bit or step drill. Why make a fuss over these?

Obviously, I would try to warranty them if the warranty covers dulling.

If you have a tool and cutter grinder, or access to one, I wouldn't be afraid to sharpen these in house.

And $260 is ridiculous. That's just price gouging.

Price gouging? Seriously??

I can buy a full index of Norseman/CTD Magnum jobber drills for $90 form HJE. These things may be a handy tool, but buying cutting tools off the tool truck is always a rip-off.

I have boxes full of Snap-On, Matco and Mac, so I do find value in their tools, but I learned long ago to buy my cutting tools from where machine shops buy their cutters.

I like the design of these drills. I think they are an innovative design, and will be useful in certain situations, but IMO they are overpriced by about $100.

Very interesting design, I assume they would have to be taken to some machine shop in order to be sharpened. Still very interesting thanks for sharing it.

Those are easy to sharpen, they're similar to unibit style bits.

OK, so if it was answered in post #23, what do they do for warranty? Do you send them the dull drill bit and they replace it, or do they sharpen it and return it to you? I understand they only warranty the bits down to 1/4 inch. I am sure if they can make the drill bit they can sharpen it, after all they sharpened it when they made it. So does the warranty mean you send it to them, they sharpen it and return it, or does it mean they just replace it?

Even at 170, I'm tempted to try them out. If I had a matco dealer, I may have bought them already.

My suggestion is to buy 2 or 3 sizes you encounter most often.

For 5mm Taps
https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/DBHS11/11-64-IN-HYPER-STEP-DRILL-BIT/
For 6mm
https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/DBHS13/13-64-IN-HYPER-STEP-DRILL-BIT/
For 7mm
https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/DBHS16/1-4-IN-HYPER-STEP-DRILL-BIT/
For 8mm
https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/DBHS18/9-32-IN-HYPER-STEP-DRILL-BIT/

Covers about 95% of broken bolt sizes on a modern vehicle.

I had a flashback when viewing these images.
I started making drills almost exactly like these back in the early 70s.
I used them for roughing holes in high temperature metals prior to using a form reamer.
