Sears/Craftsman also offered a four piece DBE Whitworth set in a green plastic pouch.….they’re also collectible.

I just don't understand this !

Sure a set of DBE Whitworth in a green plastic pouch would be cool, but certainly nothing that you put on display in your house (garage, maybe).

These are sold eBay listings, not wishful thinkers. Some things are collectable to some people. To each their own.

If I ever decided to liquidate my USA Craftsman I could probably switch over to Snap-on for close to the same cost. Haha. I’ve got that set of wrenches shown above in SAE and metric and a bunch of other Craftsman Pro stuff when they were giving it away. I have the adjustable wrenches sold for $300 too. I’d rather just use them. At least at this point.

Collectible or not, there‘s no way my wife would go for any interior decorating with old tools. Those are relegated to the basement or garage. I had a pretty good hand plane collection displayed in our previous house. She wasn’t a fan of it. When we moved a few years ago, the collection went into boxes and that’s where it stayed. There’s absolutely zero sign of it in our current house.

Getting back to the Craftsman Whitworth tools….. They were offered by Sears between approximately 1960 and 1962. The set included four DOE wrenches, four DBE wrenches and ten sockets (Again, sort of tough to find and consequently somewhat collectible.) The real gem in terms of collectible Craftsman Whitworth sized tools was a tap and die set. I’ve only seen it twice. The last one I saw sold on eBay for around $500 about a year ago.

It comes down to nostalgia, and laws of supply and demand. Since you can no longer run down to your local Sears and pick up a 29 piece set ,naturally the price goes up now for a complete set. Similar for me to the mindset, if I am traveling I somehow crave items that are easily accessible at home like Faygo pop, specifically Rock-n-Rye. As a youth I remember my mother mailing cases to her siblings that were stationed /dislocated from Michigan. Faygo was/is a regional brand. Whenever I get together with my aunts and uncles I bring Faygo ,even though its a bit more available. When do I crave one,or a Vernors for that matter? When I am someplace that doesn't have it. I could buy a 100 of them daily in 100 stores here on Detroit, I rarely do, but put my **** in Florida for a week and I get thirsty for one. Tools are the same way. Snap On prices for a Craftsman set, that ultimately the SO set would be cheaper but nostalgia buys the Craftsman. For those of us that hunt for such things, the market helps fund my adventures. I think there is something in human nature that drives us to covet something we cannot have, readily get.

In post #43, WTH is there to "remanufacture" on a combination wrench?

So I am still on my quest for a Craftsman 42966 DEB 21mm X 23mm. Now I am not a "collector", but who doesn't like a nice set of matching wrenches ? I stumbled across these.

^ That's a little on the spendy side there... he's wanting $16 per unit as a starting bid?

On the other hand, there's this lovely little 1/4" drive "Circle H" set currently listed for $228.00 + $15.70 shipping. All of 14 pieces and it's all rusty and beat up and missing pieces.

So I am wondering... does that mean that I should ask more for mine?

Or...

Jokes aside, paying top dollar for a complete set might be less satisfying than stumbling upon your missing wrench in some random yard sale somewhere.

Eh, I see it both ways. Yeah, the wrench in the OP is crusty for $30, but I'd have no problem paying $500 for a mint set of those Craftsman professional wrenches if I needed them.
