The body of the older wrenches was more rounded. I think I'd rather have the older ones. ...

If one looks at the picture, it's also plain to see that the finish on the older wrench is brighter. This means they are either using less chrome in the mix or went to nickel plating. Either way, cheaper.

I think I'm done with Craftsman unless I can get some used tools.

Unless someone convinces me otherwise ... :)

When it comes to tools, I think they fall into 3 categories. 1. JUNK, 2. GETS THE JOB DONE, and 3. THE BEST YOU CAN BUY. Craftsman definitely falls into category (2) IMHO.

I noticed Mr. Ellroy's post about the forge-and-trim manufacturing of the older wrenches versus today's newer wrenches made with the CNC contour milling process. The body of the older wrenches was more rounded. I think I'd rather have the older ones.

Ironically the newer ones are far better at gripping bolts on the sides and not the edges...(ie they've gotten better at doing what they are supposed to do - remove and install stuff).

When I fisrst started makin my tool collection, there was a Sears "surplus" store and catalog center in Boston MA It was a 10 minute drive from where I worked. It wasn't unusual for us guys to hit the place 2 times a week to look for tool bargains. My entire set of RP combos were had for a buck a piece, no matter what size. It just involved checking the bin frequently to get the sized you needed, Over the years I got literally dozens of tools, sets and other great shop stuff from that store. It was great...mechanics tools, woodworking tools, power tools. I still am using most of it to this day.
