Craftsman VA Series Wrenches are not that bad!!!
Especially when you get them NEW for $5.00 a piece shipped!!!

The V^ series are one of the better ones in Elroy's book:

Elroy has no intentions of digging up old threads but this little string had some good information. It needs a bump and Elroy tells me that he has some fresh observations to make on the current Craftsman combinations. Elroy felt this was as good as place as any to bring this subject to light

The new subject at hand, has to do with the current CNC profiled milled beams typically found on the V ^ Craftsman's. Look closely at the beam of these:

Picture001.jpg

Picture004.jpg

This series Craftsman clearly display tool marks that encompass the full 360 degree perimeter of the wrench. In Elroy's humble opinion he feels fully justified in claiming these have been CNC profiled milled. You can see the chatter marks around the full perimeter and the transition from the beam into the heads are continuous.

Look at how these CNC beams compare to the older "forge and trim" beam in the middle:

Picture005.jpg

Sticks out like a sore thumb:

Picture006.jpg

YEP. It appears to that ***** Elroy, these Craftsman's are fully contoured milled along the edge for 360 degrees . look closely at yours. You may have some as well and if you do they're probably stamped V^

Anyone else have any that are stamped differently??

Are yours contoured milled ??

Type "Sears2011" into the coupon box for another $5 off. It should ring up now as around $153 before tax, does it? Then take another $5 off and you get around $148.**.

coupon box, is that the "apply a promo code " ?

I have a set of =V= wrenches and sockets that serve me well but wanted to add a few more of mm's. So I figured for the price the VA will be ok.
I V's are hard to find around here where I am and if they land on GJ they are gone like they were on fire!!!

Nice Wrenches!!!

Personally, I feel the RP wrenches are only getting better. My father had a few older ones, however I bought the complete 43 piece combo set and then later bought the double box set. The double box set seems to have rounder edges, very smooth. I like them a lot.

In the set should be a piece of paper detailing the item listing and the pieces contained with part numbers. There should be a 1-800 phone number. Call it and tell them. I normally talk to "Andy", who does me right. If you call tomorrow, depending on when you call and where you are in the country, the missing item should be on your door step by Wed or Thurs.

Personally I hate craftsman wrenches unless Im using the box end or the fastener is loose-ish.

Be careful with those sears codes. I entered the sears2011 $5off code and it raised my shipping by $4.92. Considering I was buying extra "junk" to get that code and then free laborday shipping (which wouldnt work either even though I had over $100). I deleted all but what I really wanted and they lost about $70 in additional sales because they were trying to F me on shipping. I considered shooting an email off but realized I have better things to do. They would probably blame me anyway.

Then I went to store to pick up my gearwrenches today and the set was missing a wrench. The stock delivery boy felt compelled to argue with me that the 8mm wasnt included even though it had a spot for it and the packaging clearly stated 8mm. I was even going to wonder back into the tools and look for more goodies until that fiasco...more lost income for sears.

Circling the drain.

$70.28 in goods.

7% OH sales tax

$4.92 in tax

LOL, I won't say "no offense" 'cause I mean it, you're a *******...it was the sales tax that you were seeing.

(Don't worry we've all been there, ESPECIALLY me :D)

I see Sears also has the 28 pc. box end set on sale.

http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10...Wrench+Sets&prdNo=19&blockNo=19&blockType=L19

This is a pretty good deal for those who need a set of this size.

When I looked at getting double box ends, I settled on these:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00904986000P

and the SAE set, but I can't find it, might be sold out.

With coupons, it was around $100 including tax, and was only missing the 20mm, 26mm, and 32mm and on the SAE side, the 32ths wrench and the highest 1-7/16 x 1-1/2 one. Not worth the extra $50 to me.

With the savings, I bought this set, the deep offset box end set, on sale now w/ coupons for like $59. It's made in the USA. They are awesome.

Pipsters: I'll bet this is the standard set you're looking for.

http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10...Wrench+Sets&prdNo=10&blockNo=10&blockType=L10

I think you're right regarding the value. I'm betting most folks wouldn't have a need for the biggest wrenches.

I also bought that deep offset set you speak of. I will agree, they are awesome, plus made in USA. I almost like them better than my MAC deep offest wrenches.

When buying the wrenches, a guy just needs to make sure he buys the "Craftsman Professional" wrenches as opposed to where it only says "full polish". Only saying full polish = China.

unfortunately youre the ******* for opening your mouth without any facts or because of the inability to comprehend what I did say. My total was over $150. items were $133. Sales tax was somewhere in the neighborhood of $10. shipping was around $10 I dont remember the exact number and I dont remember the exact total, but I had 2 of the reversible gearwrench sets, the gimmicky screwdriver set, and the $50 triangle set.

I added everything to my cart including the shipping and sales tax, added the free shipping code and it wouldnt take. Most likely because the triangle set is clearance out. I understood and tried the $5 off code and the price barely changed. I then checked the prices and realized the shipping had gone up by the $4. Because of the ******** shenanigans, I deleted $70 worth of items and picked up my two items in store.

Then I later remembered I had just purchased one of the nice armstrong sets for $30 shipped and was actually glad they pissed me off. Like I said, circling the drain with their piss poor customer service.

That *****, somehow I've managed to sneak it by them 11 or 12 times so far this year. I still vote for "user error".

Sears, the end of an era. *****. Although today I called the Apex 800 # and got 8 sockets shipped to my door for free. Get 'em while you can is what I say.

The only issue I had with the deep offset set was one was one was bent slightly, I called the 800 number and they sent a new one out to me.

i think craftsman would stab themselves in the foot, if they make the wrenches and sockets outside USA. but i see that coming, someday.

All the raised panel stuff is still "Forged in USA" as well as all the mainline Craftsman brand sockets. The polished ones, yep, Chinese, except for the "pro" marked polished deep offset wrench set which is still Apex/USA.

Of course, you know it's coming. Or maybe not, it's quite possible the most expensive part of the process is the chroming of the polished wrenches, hence why it's done out of this country.

The set I ordered arrived today. Everything was there no shortages or doubles.
This set will hopefully start to reduce me from running back and forth from the garage to the outbuilding for tools all the time.
Thanks for the tip.

If its such garbage, why are you commenting on it. This threads was meant to praise the usa made wrenches for overall value and performanc.e

You're better off ignoring people like that

Personally I am really happy with my Craftsman combo, double box, and deep offset wrenches. They are a great value US made product that "doesn't ****" IMO.

I just ordered these to get the big sizes. I'm lacking those in any of my sets and the price seems like it can't be beat. I have smaller full sets of 6-point so 12-point will be OK for me.

I noticed Mr. Ellroy's post about the forge-and-trim manufacturing of the older wrenches versus today's newer wrenches made with the CNC contour milling process. The body of the older wrenches was more rounded. I think I'd rather have the older ones.

The other day I went to OSH and took a look at the latest Craftsman 1/2" breaker bar. It's thinner metal, maybe 40 percent thinner. Also, it is stamped, "Wear safety goggles at all times," or something to that effect. It looked to me to be of lower quality than past models. I think I'd rather have a thicker wrench without the warning than a thin one.

My impression is that K-Mart pushed their suppliers to cut down on manufacturing and/or material costs. So breaker bars are thinner and wrenches are not as smooth and easy to hold around the shank. Thus, we have the new K-Mart models. Next stop is Guangdong, China, where I think the pliers, air tools and everything else is made now.

Made in the USA means something, for sure. I just think it's important to look at exactly what one is buying, too.
